I just want another F-Zero. WarioWare and Odyssey 2 would be sweet.

Maybe we get to see Metroid Prime 4?
We got WarioWare gold not too long ago, so i don't think we'll get an announcement for a new one, but that would be awesome. F-Zero would be an awesome surprise, and i'm honestly kinda expecting to see a new mario with all the hints and everything.

If we don't get to see MP4, i would be quite happy with trilogy making it's way to switch, since iv'e never played them.

Yeah probably, seemed like a no brainer to expand further onto the capture mechanic.
I'd be interested to see what new locales they will visit too, perhaps they can expand onto the Cloud and Ruined kingdoms, Mario would probably revisit Isle Delfino too, maybe even take it a step further and have him visit a different game franchise kingdom such as Hyrule, might be a good opportunity to revive Link's outfit too that was cut in the last game.
i drool at the thought of all of that

Didn't they reset development on that earlier this year? Would be nice though, maybe a Switch port of the original trilogy would be nice to see.
I'd be delighted, since I don't own Echoes and Corruption anymore and I kind of regret that.

A leak that revealed Gold also claimed a WarioWare Switch was in development at the same time so I'm holding out hope.

Since Images are working again on Smashboards, here are some Layton memes I found!
I've seen those meme's on Reddit. Should we do the Azran ritual again for good luck?

I should give the trilogy another shot since I only played a little bit of the first Metroid Prime and Echoes. So an HD trilogy port would be nice to see.

Oh I see, I suppose that could work, I don't know if Wario Ware games take that long to develop so we should hopefully be hearing about the Switch entry pretty soon.

My apologies for the double post but can I please take a moment to express how super happy I am that they are continuing to support Smash Ultimate with more DLC beyond this fighters pass?!? The dream of seeing Layton and Phoenix might just very well come true, here is hoping....

First thing that came into my mind when they announced more character! The "new worlds" thing said by Sakurai makes me pretty certain they are only going to continue adding non-repped franchises into Smash. A Layton/Phoenix duo reveal would be a dream to me.

Yeah indeed, this is so exciting to hear. Here's hoping they make the most of this opportunity. Please Sakurai, give us the Prof...

I don't want to go around calling characters "shoo ins" or "locks" and whatnot (since we know how that always turns out....)

But I can't help but feel highly confident that we will most surely be getting a Koei Tecmo and Level-5 character at some point. Especially if we are having at least 6 more characters in the pipelines.

Here's hoping for the best.

Yeah, I feel pretty confident about that too!

Also, apparently the Japanese direct included an announcement of a surprising reboot...

Layton and Wright have first-party Nintendo company, as Famicom Detective Club is back!

Oh wow, that's very cool to hear, here's hoping it makes it overseas. Layton and Phoenix could use a fellow VN adventure game series by their side. Who knows, maybe they will cross over with that series too.

Anyway, today has been a good day as far as new Smash news goes. Sakurai did mention that he wanted to help support Japanese third party companies through Smash so hopefully Level-5 will have a good shot in getting a character in there, especially Layton, there is so much Sakurai can do with him, it would definitely be great to see.

Here's hoping the Proffesah gets in. We're really back in uncharted territory.

How crazy is it that Famicom Detective Club Is coming back! And so soon after that Miyamoto interview...

Hey, I'm curious, anyone mind fetching that interview? Clearly there's something more than meets the eye.

Hey, I'm curious, anyone mind fetching that interview? Clearly there's something more than meets the eye.
I believe this is the interview from the last Investor Relations Q&A in July.
Question 7: Thirty years have passed since Famicom Tantei Club (Famicom Detective Club; direct translation of the Japanese title) was released in Japan for the Family Computer Disk System, and its excellent production and script still resonate with people today. I would like Nintendo to be constantly creating long-form games like this. Is the current Nintendo still capable of creating games in this sort of "adventure game" genre? Please tell us about the development framework for each game genre, and about your communication with international developers.

Takahashi:
Nintendo's software development system is made up of several thousand people around the world, if we include both our internal developers and the second-party creators who assist us with software development. So, all kinds of games are being made by all sorts of producers. Each producer is a specialist in some fields and not in others, but there are also times when they don't just stick to their specialization and challenge themselves as a team to try and create titles in genres outside of their specialties. We would like our diverse development teams to create in any genre of game. We plan to continuously challenge ourselves to create new IP, while also valuing the IP we have created up to now.
Additionally, our development staff includes many people from other countries who can speak Japanese, as well as many bilinguals. We also sometimes use interpreters. When we are communicating face-to-face, we use Japanese or English. This is true for all of Nintendo, not just in software development.
Miyamoto:
Thank you for such an encouraging question. We, too, want to create titles we can still be proud of after 10 years. We're sometimes accused of working only within established series, but many of those series have been going for 30 years and are now part of our brand. We also want to create new titles that will become the first of a new series, and we are always working hard toward that.
As for adventure games, I’ve made a lot of them, starting back with Famicom Mukashibanashi: Shin Onigashima (Famicom Tales: New Demon Island; direct translation of the Japanese title), but the environment for production is more demanding these days. Games today are localized in 10 or more languages, so the cost of localizing the voicing and script for an adventure game (which generally has a great deal of text) is enormous. Plus, compared to an older gamer like me, I feel that younger gamers tend to have less of an interest in that genre. That said, adventure game mechanics are still fun, and Capcom's Ace Attorney series and Level-5's Professor Layton series make good use of them. So, I don’t give up hope yet, but please understand that it's challenging to actively make them for the mainstream market.
Our collaboration outside of Japan is 30 years strong, and we have staff who specialize in communicating with developers in other countries. I too often work with companies in other countries. The new Luigi's Mansion 3 was also developed with a company outside of Japan (Next Level Games Inc.). Over the years, we have built a global software development framework. I have felt Nintendo becoming more global in recent years. The number of people from outside of Japan working at Nintendo's headquarters has increased considerably, and we get to know each other over lunch and so on.

Makes you wonder... They did give a very long and detailed answer, and went into the specific challenges of localization, so maybe a hint that they're at least considering it?

If the remake was being hinted at, surely a mention of Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton can't hurt. Though it could also be read as justifying the remake to investors with the success of other titles in the genre.

That is pretty interesting now that you bring up that interview, especially now that we know that even Nintendo themselves are working on reviving the genre. Wether that means anything for Layton and Phoenix in Smash I suppose that remains to be seen. But it could very well be possible that they may try and introduce the genre to a wider audience, especially as I believe they stated something along those lines as to them wanting to use Smash as a means to reach a larger audience.

Another interesting tidbit is Sakurai himself promoting the third party games during his showcases for both Hero and Banjo, to where he encouraged viewers to try the Dragon Quest and Banjo Kazooie series out, even if he was essentially promoting a competitors console as he put it. Perhaps he might do that for the rest of the pass, kind of like how they used to promote other games during the Smash 4 character reveals on the official website.

I could very well see Sakurai promoting the HD remasters on IOS when Layton is in, like "By the way, the original DS games have been remastered on IOS and Android devices, please do check them out"

whered that number come from?
Keywords are "especially if"
I'm just speculating.

Also apparently colour theory is still alive (somehow), which I guess wouldn't really be much of a hindrance for us one way or the other since the colour that would be left is orange and its a pretty prominent colour with Layton too, not to mention that we will be getting more DLC characters down the line eitherway.

This does make me wonder on the possibility of the Prof being the final character of this pass, how would you feel about that?
If he is, they need to do a silly little thing where Sakurai jokingly say's that he's the final DLC character and then lead on to a loud OBJECTION from Phoenix. It would be a great way to show off both characters while transitioning over to the next fighters pass.

Maybe also have a little moment where Layton tells Phoenix that its been a while since the case of Labyrinthia and that it great to meet up with him again here in Smash.

Frankly, now that more DLC is confirmed, I'm not as worried about Layton's placement as most people who don't care about him will probably just say "Meh. Maybe next time!". If we're really lucky, any salt about him would be overridden by hype for a random Mii costume haha.

It would be very cool to see Layton/Wright get a duo reveal, which definitely does feel more likely with future DLC. Having Wright be the first non-pass character after him would be hilarious too. I imagine there would be some joke about Layton vs Wright, but also they resisted an SNK vs Capcom joke in Terry's trailer, so maybe not...

Probably yeah, although we didn't really get much gameplay footage for Terry so I guess that ship has sailed. I'm pretty surprised he's coming so soon though, November. Guess their really on schedule for this DLC. Perhaps it might even wrap up before February...

But yeah, I'm most happy that there is additional DLC characters in the pipelines so even if Layton is the last character for this pass, he'd just be shrugged off at worst (or overshadowed by a Five Nights at Freddy's Mii costume or whatever...) so we can be happy about his inclusion without too much conflict going on with the rest of the community.

I hope we'll see him soon in that case.

Also I've been looking around a bit, I've been seeing some more Layton fans becoming more optimistic for the Prof following the news of more DLC incoming, I'm happy that the fandom's morale has risen, hopefully it will continue to grow. I should probably do something to reach out towards the rest of the Layton fandom, I should probably continue work on my Layton 3D model...

I still don't think Layton will be the fifth dlc fighter but it could happen
IMO the quicker we get him the better lmao
I'm more on the Doom Slayer hype train right now for the final fighters pass fighter, but now I don't mind Layton being the last one :D
Also, one of the theories is that each dlc fighters of the pass cater to certain regions :
-Joker : Wild card (lol) or just Sakurai pick
-Hero : Japan
-Banjo : America
-Terry : Latin America and China
-???? : Europe
I don't want to get my hopes up buuuuuuuut Sakurai please ^^

the way i see it its: joker, popular game. hero, popular game series. banjo & kazooie, most popular former nintendo characters and heavily requested for smash. terry, nostalgia bait.

people need to stop with the theories they probably just picked a bunch of characters they thought would sell well

To be fair, didn't Nintendo themselves state they where trying to target many demographics with the DLC and try and get as many different audiences as possible into Smash?

It would make sense to aim for as wide of a scope as possible to reach the most people.

Eitherway, Layton would reach out to a large audience that the current DLC hasn't really tappet into much so there is always a spot open for a character like him. We just have to hope that Nintendo has the same idea...

well nintendo chose the characters, sakurai made the final decision, so there may have been some rejection, apart from that im not if theres anything that legitimately stands in the prof's way anymore

Yeah at the end of the day, its all on Nintendo and Sakurai's hands as they have the final say of who gets in or not, all the third parties can do is either agree or decline their offers. Its good that Hino confirmed that the Layton series is his most favourite franchise from his company so he hopefully wouldn't have any objections if Nintendo or Sakurai where to give him a call for Layton to join the roster.

Also seeing mii costumes like Lip and Goemon making it in gives me some more reassurance that they are indeed looking around to the Smash fanbase and what kind of characters are discussed and supported.

well i suppose a mii fighter costume would be better than nothing, i guess all we can do at this stage is wait and see and hope. and maybe see if we can drum up some more support after all it can only help

The way I like to look at it is they acknowledge that they have heard you, even if the character in question doesn't necessarily become playable. Which can only encourage fans to support their characters even further for next time since it gives them the reassurance that their voices are being heard.

But yeah, its important that we just continued to support the character further and not give up so easily. Sakurai has already given us many surprises that most people didn't see coming in this game alone, what would make Layton any different?

Google Trends is a measure of popularity, although this isn't enough and that comparison criteria aren't always fair. It can't be completely representative.

In the World
Final Fantasy
> Sonic / Resident Evil > Pac-Man > Dragon Quest > Monster Hunter > UNDERTALE > DOOM > Metal Gear > Street Fighter > Megaman / Tomb raider > Tekken > SimCity > The King of Fighters > Tales of > Persona / Devil May Cry / Yo-Kai Watch > Harvest Moon > Crash Bandicoot > Bomberman > Tamagotchi > Castlevania > Rayman > Ninja Gaiden > Professor Layton / Ace Attorney > Project Zero > Bayonetta / Puyo Puyo > Shovel Knight > Banjo-Kazooie > Virtua Fighter > Ganbare Goemon / Shantae > Babylonian Castle Saga.
Professor Layton > Bayonetta > Banjo-Kazooie.
If Professor Layton would be a new series in Smash Bros, it would be ranked 17/24 of all third-party series (without Spirit nor Pac-Man moves), or 11/13 of third-party series having a Fighter.

In Japan
Dragon Quest
> Monster Hunter > Yo-Kai Watch > Final Fantasy > Tales of > Resident Evil > Metal Gear / Persona > Megaman / Tekken > Puyo Puyo > Tamagotchi > Ace Attorney > Devil May Cry > Street Fighter > Harvest Moon > Project Zero > UNDERTALE > The King of Fighters > SimCity > Bayonetta / Professor Layton > Sonic > Bomberman > Castlevania > Pac-Man > Tomb Raider > Virtua Fighter / DOOM > Ninja Gaiden > Crash Bandicoot > Ganbare Goemon > Shantae > Rayman > Shovel Knight > Banjo-Kazooie > Babylonian Castle Saga.

If Professor Layton would be a new series in Smash Bros, it would be ranked 14/24 of all third-party series (without Spirit nor Pac-Man moves), or 8/13 of third-party series having a Fighter.

> Sonic / Resident Evil > Pac-Man > Dragon Quest > Monster Hunter > UNDERTALE > DOOM > Metal Gear > Street Fighter > Megaman / Tomb raider > Tekken > SimCity > The King of Fighters > Tales of > Persona / Devil May Cry / Yo-Kai Watch > Harvest Moon > Crash Bandicoot > Bomberman > Tamagotchi > Castlevania > Rayman > Ninja Gaiden > Professor Layton / Ace Attorney > Project Zero > Bayonetta / Puyo Puyo > Shovel Knight > Banjo-Kazooie > Virtua Fighter > Ganbare Goemon / Shantae > Babylonian Castle Saga.
Professor Layton > Bayonetta > Banjo-Kazooie.
If Professor Layton would be a new series in Smash Bros, it would be ranked 17/24 of all third-party series (without Spirit nor Pac-Man moves), or 11/13 of third-party series having a Fighter.

now come on a franchise's popularity doesnt mean too much other wise fire emblem wouldnt outnumber several other more popular nintendo franchises

The Layton series has sold over 17 million copies, that's more than some third parties already in the game, I think he's qualified enough to warrant an appearance in Smash, especially as Level-5's highest selling franchise.

exactly all the the arguments against layton have been disproved by other inclusions (just like toad) and all we really need to do is just try and get more supporters, which is one of the many reasons we're here

I am back! I was just reading for the longest time here in diverse topics as I felt newcomer discussion was not so nice anymore. People were hating on a newcomer like Terry. Especially "knowing" the last DLC is probably Hayabusa people weren't that nice anymore in the most topics. But since we know more DLC is coming, everything is better again.

Actually, a character like Terry is good for us! A character not so popular as Crash, Doom Slayer, Rayman et cetera. Layton could be a surprising less-popular pick! Next to that, Nintendo is willing to license with new third-parties for this DLC (Microsoft, SNK, maybe Koei Tecmo). Hopefully Level 5 gets added to that list since it's the biggest Japanese third party company left (with Koei Tecmo of course). Seven companies are involved with Smash right now (8 if you count Atlus as seperate) and to represent gaming history even better, they can add Professor Layton. Especially since the only DS representation we have is Lucario and some stages like Unova Pokémon League and PictoChat 2. It's too little representation for one of Nintendo's most succesfull eras!

I feel like Level-5 just needs to announce a new game with the Prof in it and I'm sure support will rise high.
Apparently they are waiting until that one Inazuma Eleven game comes out before they announce any other projects on the horizon. I would hope not and they will just announce the next entry at the TGS or Level-5 Vision...

Speaking of which, apparently there is this whole petition going on over at Twitter with Layton fans demanding to bring back Professor Layton since apparently he hasn't had a game for over 7 years (Has it really been that long since Azran Legacy?) I guess people really do view LMJ as a spin off more than a reboot of the series huh...?

Hey welcome back DutchPichu!
Yeah I think the reason they confirmed more characters in development so early was because they knew it would be a bloodbath in the community over that final character, that's a good foresight on their part.

Yeah I think Nintendo and Sakurai really want to go full on out with third parties for DLC. Especially as Sakurai stated that he wanted to introduce more new worlds into the Smash series. I think he also stated that he wanted to help support Japanese third party companies in particular to make them more recognizable for the rest of the world (or something along those lines), which we can see now with the inclusion of Atlus and SNK. Which should hopefully bode very well for us. Level-5 and Koei Tecmo are probably the most significant frontrunners as far as unrepresented Japanese third party companies go so hopefully they will manage to get a character in there.

And yes, the DS era could really use some more love, its crazy how it still only has one character in there despite how much of a hit it was at the time.:ultlucario:
And even then some people argue that Lucario is "technically" from the GBA just because of some Pokemon Mystery Dungeon cameo...
Even the Wii U of all things technically has at least two characters.... :ultinkling::ultalph:

This might be our best shot yet so lets hope for the best.
