Even though I own multiple copies of the original Super Smash Bros. cartridge in both NA and Japanese form I still went ahead and downloaded the Virtual Console version for the Wii. Glad I did too because it looks much nicer on my LCD HDTV and also because GameCube controllers are much easier to find than good N64 ones nowadays. Oh, and yes the VC version does support the Classic Controller although I still haven’t purchased the Pro version yet.

Here's the VC version in 480p 16:9 mode.

We could probably get the same quality of that and even better with Glide64.

edit: Why do you own so many smash broters games?

also, wave race 64 ftw.

I own a bunch of copies of Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64 because I’m somewhat of a video game collector and those are my two favorite games on the N64. In fact, those are my 2 favorite franchises across all the Nintendo consoles and that’s why I still play Brawl and Mario Kart Wii almost daily.

Also, SSB makes a pretty good investment because relatively speaking very few copies in mint condition like mine still exists.

But more intriguing is why two of your SSB (U) games and one of your Mario Kart games don't have that fancy official Nintendo seal...

Did they only start doing that sometime after first releasing the N64?

Nah, all of the games are official. That seal means that those are Player’s Choice copies which are actually less valuable than the earlier releases.

I’m kinda embarrassed to admit it but I own even more copies of both of these games that are complete in box and locked away for safe keeping.

Oh and yeah, Soupamario I agree completely; Wave Race 64 is a fantastic game. That’s why I purchased this Japanese Shindou version that includes Rumble Pak support.

does anyone know about the lag from VC vs the lag from N64? :o (for HDTVs)

My Sharp Aquos LC-40D68UT is an amazing LCD TV as it suffers no input lag whatsoever with either the Wii or the N64.

Check out this video if you’re a serious gamer looking to upgrade to an HDTV and have resisted do to fears of input lag.

I was at the Big E (state fair) the other day, and they had a video game booth up with tons of old school consoles and games (all used), and they had a huge stack of SSB cartridges that they were selling (used!) for $35 each!

For loose copies that’s about right. Boxed copies sell upwards of $50.

from what was discussed earlier, the problem is not with delay (if the tv does not cause it) but with frame skips.
the vc version skips some frames thus limiting your possibilities of entering commands.

Oh, okay. It's just that every other game, even stuff like Mario Kart was about $15, and I guess I thought SSB was a relatively popular game in high circulation (especially considering that stack was the largest of all the games). But what the hell do I know?

I collect snes games myself...FF3 complete(box, manual, map and poster) is my fav piece so far :)

A Japanese smash64 game would be pretty cool to own though hah

And thank you very much for the TV tip...I've been looking for a specific TV to get recently but...all i knew was "Samsung" TVs some times are ok...but nothing specific

Yeah now that you mention it I do remember reading that. I’m sure competitive players would notice the difference but casuals like me aren’t too affected. In fact, my friends now prefer to play the VC version because of the enhanced visual fidelity and the fact that they can use the GameCube controller.

Keep trying because I’d really like to see a picture to compare the difference. As I mentioned before I own even more copies of the game and they’re all the same exact color. I wonder if yours faded by being in the sunlight or something.

Oh and to those people who mentioned that the SSB cartridge won’t be collectable anytime soon that’s fine. I’m prepared to hold on to them until the N64 itself is just a faint memory in peoples minds. I doubt it’ll take that long though as the popularity of each successive game in the series just ups the desirability of the previous games.

Here are some worldwide production numbers unless otherwise noted in case anyone is interested:

Mario Kart 64 (Not counting VC sales)
Unit sold: 9.87 million

Super Smash Bros. (Not counting VC sales)
Units sold: 5.5 million
In the US only: 2.93 million

SSB: Melee
Units sold: 7.08 million

SSB: Brawl
Units sold to date: 9.65 million

Mario Kart Wii
Units sold to date: 23.04 million!!! :psycho:

More pictures from my collection.

Lol I'm looking at the SSB64 box and it's hilarious how much knockback Fox's jab has.

Awsome. Somebody else has Love for collecting games.

I have 4 copys of SSB64.

I have a complete, brand new factory sealed, never open copy. VGA grade of 90. Only one I know of with this high of grade. Already worth almost 600$.

I also have 3 other lose copys with box, booklet, inserts, plastic bag wrap, cart, etc. ALL in perfect condition.

Also to the guy that has the blue on his cart. Thats from fading, there was no cart made with a blue background, as your cart's value is worth almost nothing. sorry . LOL.

Im glad their is gamers that collect, is there anybody else that like this stuff to...?

I also have a complete NES, SNES, Virtual BOY, Sega CD, Sega Saturn, game.com complete collection of games. Also have tons of other games for other game systems, trying to complete them all.

I also have everything complete for online ROM collecting.

Most collecters look for COMPLETE games with everything included, with no edge marks, dents, clouding of the box booklet cart.

Nobody wants Players Choice games as they are worthless.

Anything with rental stickers, Price stickers, or anything, is kind of a bummer, especially if you find a rare game that hardly shows up, and it's got stickers and junk all over it, and wear and tear and missing pieces, maps, etc.

Some stickers can be removed, but take caution as if you remove a sticker and mess up a label, front or back of the cart, you game is nothing.

It's good to see peeps collecting.

I could talk about this forever, but its irrelevant to smash 64, except the copy of the game which I already talked about mine.

CHAPS!

the problem you will have is with vc and the such.
in the future it is hard to believe someone paying that much for the original when they can get a port for much less (though the port itself is not that good).

In a lot of ways I see the Virtual Console version of Super Smash Bros. helping to promote the original cartridge. The VC version doesn’t have rumble support like the N64 cartridge version of SSB does. That alone makes the original cartridge extremely desirable to any true video game collector or Smash Bros. aficionado.

It actually used to be more like $4000 last time I checked several months ago, unless this is a different one.
I think emulation has driven down the prices on some games. I guess that’s fine if you just want to play a game but nothing beats owning a legitimate copy of a video game that has had a dramatic impact on your life. I view it kinda like owning a fake Rolex watch, that may be fine for posers but sincere people want the real thing.

Yeah, I agree completely. Same goes for music. I own tons of rare and out of print stuff just for the novelty and sake of owning it, even if I never end up popping it in the cassette player (that I don't have; at least not at college). I'd say it's music first, then games for me.

My digital music collection is hundreds of times the size of my physical, but that's because I don't have tens of thousands of dollars, and the fact that I can't even find half the crap available for purchase even if I wanted it.

That said, I wouldn't shell out $2000 for a game.

$2,000 for a game seems like a bargain compared to the cool million that someone paid for the issue of Action Comics that introduced Super Man. :psycho:

Anywho, I’ve always been attracted to people that collect anything because it takes a great deal of passion to be a successful collector.

What I find the most amazing thing is that the original Super Smash Bros. came out on that huge cartridge but now you can literally put dozens of N64 era games on a postage stamp sized SD card. :chuckle:

Yeah, it's incredible. I have a DS flashcart that is just loaded with NES, SNES, GameGear, Atari, Genesis, etc. games. All of that on a MicroSD card the size of your fingernail.

It's amazing how just 25 years ago, a giant cartridge was needed to house a few kilobytes of data, while nowadays the same size hunk of hardware can hold many gigabytes.

And now, apparently the 3DS carts are going to be up to 2GB in size! I believe the largest DS game was a little under 300 MB.

I'm frightened to think of how technology will be improved in the coming years...

---

But yeah, my SSB cartridge is a Player's Choice (didn't actually look at the seal thing until you mentioned it), which is apparently defined as a "million seller". I was late to the N64 game...

My Ocarina of Time cart is not a Player's Choice apparently, which is neat! It's also the first version with that interesting little debug mode you get from slightly jiggling the cartridge in the area where you travel through time.

Did anybody notice that the “E” rating on the SSB cartridge on the left in my original picture is white while on the other two it’s black? Weird huh?

Concerning collecting, it’s probably a smarter investment to purchase N64 controllers than it is the software for the system. Here are a few of my best N64 controllers although I don’t have a box for any of them. :urg:

This guy puts me to shame, though. :dizzy:

this thread is awsome!

I collect.
For personal satisfaction, not because I think I'll make a ton of money doing it.
I don't own those clear read and clear blue controllers. That makes me angry lol.

i hope you guys understand what i called 'background' (the background of the drawning in the adhesive with SSB logo and the characters) :p so i dont think only the background of the draw is faded by something
its just curiosity, because i never noticed that until one of my friends asked why mine is blue, after that i always took a look at friends's ssb cartridges and they really were different

and matts you dont need to try to make fun of me saying its worth nothing because i just dont care, im not trying to make money of that and i wouldnt sell my ssb64 cartridge anyway lol

I have the SSB64 game.
I don't know if I have the box or manual. It's more likely that I have the manual than the box though. If I have the box it is probably flattened/crappy.

=[ I blame my parents.
Also, I desperately need more controllers. I only own 2!
Where would you suggest I get them for the best price?

(its useless now mind you...just like the rest xD)

I got a hot tip from an anonymous but trustworthy source to this game store that apparently sold awesome cool top condition controllers, but I called and emailed them and stuff and couldn't get a response. Sadface. So I figure I'll just buy a bunch of random ones and try to figure out how to replace the sticks.

Replacing the sticks is dirt easy. Those controllers come apart like they were meant to be toyed around with. The hard part is finding a good stick. I'm gonna wait until my controllers get really bad before trying to "enhance" them with tape or glue or something.

In the meantime, I'll still be on the lookout for replacement sticks...
