I am going to take it somewhat seriously. I mean, I'm not gonna be like: "HAW HAW HAW *runs off the edge*" if that's what this thread is getting at. I'm going to try as hard in online play as I do in any other mode.

The only difference is I'm not going to go cry if it starts lagging; I'm pretty passive, that wouldn't bother me. Even if there was a ranking system, I would accept the loss, it's not like that's going to happen all the time.

So if SWF comes up with a ranking system, I'll probably join the movement, and won't use lag as an excuse for pulling losses. I know what I'm getting into when I use the internet.

I wish they at least showed names, that wouldn't be so bad; but maybe this is just a quick "play imeadiatly" mode and there will be another mode that has names, ranks, and options on time, stock, items, and gametype.

iv played plenty of online games. iv seen em lag and iv seen em not lag. if someone has a crappy connection: slower DSL with 8 computers all running on it and the wii using a low wireless signal: yes, it will lag. if all players are running on fast wired connection (everyone should get wired internet on their wii for brawl, it will help a lot), then it wont lag. i use a wifi connector now and it works perfect. however, im switching back to my wired connection (i got a dongle for like $15 that works great) just to make sure my connection is perfect. believe me, if both ppl have good connections and its only 1v1, it wont drop any frames.

it will suck in comparison to almost everything. but in terms of comparing it to nothing, it stands up quite well.

i just don't understand why nintendo is being such an *** about online play. first we don't even know other people's names so we can't even play with the same person twice if we choose to do so.

then if we do go through the trouble of tracking someone down, we have to enter these long annoying friend codes.

we don't even get a mic system set up.

the 4 messages are just a waste, you really can't say that much in 4 different sentences.

no ranking system sucks.

there's apparent lag. i wouldn't mind this at all if they had the other stuff, but how dare you take away everything else from us and still tell us there is lag!!!
On top of that we can't make rooms and we can't even know how many matches we've won or lost. Seriously, wtf.

Latency is going to be there regardless--even if it doesn't affect the gameplay due to a good connection, it's still there.

Based on past experience of several online games...if the connection is a little less than good, you are more likely to see a problem arise. Whether it be jerky animations/'teleporting', a capped frame rate (a la Mario Kart: DD*), or taking hits that seem disjointed--or even hits that don't seem to be coming from your opponent at all. There is also simply having to compensate for your latency by targeting the space your opponent will be in X amount of milliseconds (ping/lag is measured in milliseconds for any who don't know)**.

For relevance of topic, it all depends on how Brawl plays when it's released. And, then it should be discussed. But considering all I've read, I think it would be best to leave--at the very least--top-level tourney play (i.e. MLG-related) to local matches. As for competitive playing in general, it all depends.

If items are forced during random matches, then it's a 'no'. And competitive playing is best left to friendly brawls. However, if there is a vote for items in random matches, then it's still iffy and only friendly matches would be viable for play, IMO.

*Playing Mario Kart: Double Dash over the Internet via a tunneling program was not intended and so any lag between the two players dropped the gameplay frame rate significantly. This is a very poor way at managing latency and no game intended for Internet play would have this happen unless, perhaps, if the connection is horrible. This wouldn't be good for an over-all fast-paced game like Brawl.

**Compensating for your lag between you and a player (usually, it's between you and a server) by leading your attacks ahead of the player is the old-school method of handling latency. This may actually be a more viable way of dealing with latency in Brawl, but this would require lightning fast prediction from very skilled players. Also, such a method may make the game somewhat difficult for newer players

EDIT: on another note 'competitive random matches' is only relative to player skill not to any deciding terms other than 'I pwned that random dude'. So serious competition should be friend matches or local matches only.

This thread wasn't supposed to be bumped =(

I've made this point long ago when we were short on information, I don't think it's too valid anymore.
