Soooo, guys. Ever since I picked up Ice Climbers it's been an endless struggle for me to conquer IC's counter characters. There have been quite a number of difficult matchups that it took me a while to figure out... Peach, Fox, Ganon, Marth, Jigglypuff, Samus, and even G&W and Yoshi. There were also times where characters who are supposed to suck against IC's (like Sheik and Falco) became very challenging. But at this point I've pretty much figured out all the matchups and I am able to play confidently at them.

So now there's one, just ONE LEFT that is really difficult for me. I need your help, IC board!

I'm pretty sure we all agree on why Luigi is difficult, right?
We'll I'll elaborate on a some important notes.

1. Luigi wavedashes faster than the IC's.

In fact, he is the only character who can do that. Obviously, this would give him some advantages. He outspeeds and outranges them with what seems like almost double their wd length. His horizontal movement (coupled with that sliding tornado of his) makes it very difficult to punish any mistake he makes, which he covers with double aerials and shield stun. His wd smashes are able to push the IC's back really far. So pretty much his approaches are clean and almost unpunishable. It seems like the only way to stop his approach is to predict and intercept him with some sort of forward tilt or smash, or a blizzard or block...

So my question is, how do I deal with fighting Luigi when I am being forced into defensive game? How can I take offense? It works against Falco because you can kill him from a single punished mistake. Luigi, unfortunately, can't be combo'd to death from 0%. Let's assume I don't know how to wobble.

2. Luigi has double aerials.

This is the main reason why it's hard to shield grab him. Sometimes I just really need to get that grab to kill him off without having too much lag. Fsmashes and usmashes can be too risky because of the lag, and it's hard to hit him with dsmash because 1 his horizontal movement is faster and 2 he's in the air a lot of the time. So is there a way to punish him between his aerials or should I just roll away? Is there any way to prevent that kind of approach in general?

3. Luigi beats IC's on FD.

So let's say I get used to the matchup... Now what stage should I pick against him? From past experiences I've seen that Luigi is pretty much the only character that gains an advantage against Ice Climbers on FD because of his WD speed. He seems to control the space much better because his moves are faster, with faster ways to approach, and less lag.

Would it be okay to pick a small stage like Yoshi story? How about a big one like Dreamland? Are there any unorthodox counter picks (Mute, Corneria, a moving stage...?) that would work in this matchup?

More questions later. Thank you guys very very much for your help!

Keep in mind all of the Luigi's I have personally played against are significantly worse than me, however I've found that forward smash and forward air attacks are the most reliable, I dont bother with blocks at all, and hes so floaty that you cant really grab him out of blizzard so I dont do that much either.

Fair outranges everything he has in the air except his bair I am pretty sure, so I really like that one, also it tends to knock Luigi up where you can get some Uairs in. I have had some good success with Piston combos, I like to do 2 forwad smashes and then charge one in anticipation of a wavedash tilt, or 3 and charge, usually works well for me.

I treat this match up similar to falcon, basically I abandon grab tactics unless it is guaranteed (which it will basically never be) He is nearly impossible to shield grab but you can u-b out of shield blizzard and sometimes forward smash him out of the blizzard. This match becomes about blocking his ground based attacks and intercepting his aerials with forward smashes (usmashes IMO dont have enough range for this particular match up). I am not very sure of what to do what he uses his ground tornado, asside from bad timing on his part it seems relatively safe for him (maybe grab him during it, but the timing would be rediculous)

For edgegaurding if he is under the stage I would hog and have nana dsmash, or just let him on, he can hop up and nail nana or waveland up and have you on a edge pretty easily so this might be a match where you just block when hes under and bair when hes over.

for stages - Luigi does well on flat stages and ICs do poorly on not flat stages, so I would say you would both want to be picking neutrals but I have a feeling Luigi would be better on certain CP stages. Mute would hurt luigi's recovery more than yours, but at the same time the cars are worse for you than him, so double edged sword.

Binx Is right.....forward smashes are ftw against luigi. I have played a fairly good one and Shield grabbing does not work. also..luigi can combo the **** out of you....but his moves dont do nearly as much damage(i noticed this when i got comboed SO much only to realize it gave me only 40 damage. I Smashed him once and we were even again ;) )

also..get used to the fact that he can do two/three aerials out of a jump. Its something people usually arent used to.

Just out of curiousity... does anyone know of ways to screw with Luigi with your shield? Can you N-lightshield/P-shield, and tilt towards him to screw with his hitstun?

I was also thinking that perhaps, assuming he nicks your shield with d-air, if you tilt down and away so Popo's isn't hit, and shield-grab immediately before he can n-air/waveland away.

Anyways, play patiently. That's the most important part. Be patient, and play his game until you can space perfectly. F-tilt is my favorite spacing tool, and much of the time I forget how good it is.

Stages... I wouldn't go with anything too small to move around on (Luigi isn't bad on platforms), but small death zones are okay. With that said, I'm pretty comfortable on FoD.

Pokemon Stadium I would also say is "nicer" the the ICs. Pretty good stage in general, medium-sized, none of its features help Luigi in any way. Also, the edges are somewhat hard to sweetspot (ICs don't care about that, and it makes edgeguarding a lot simpler).

Luigi is perhaps even worse than Solo Popo on moving stages, so you don't even have to worry about losing Nana. Pokefloats is probably still horrible, but Rainbow Cruise... eh... it would depend if your opponent stays Luigi or not, and you would probably want to change characters at that point.

I played today and I seemed to do well against Luigi on Dreamland, but that may have just been me playing well.

It also seems like IC's has a fair advantage on Yoshi story because they are actually far more mobile than him on that stage, and edgeguarding/killing becomes very simple because of the small stage. another neat thing about that stage is shy guys can gimp his recovery.

That said, Battlefield could also be a decent choice because of the ledge and its difficulty to sweetspot? If he does a green missile under it, he's finished, isn't he?

Anyways, I'm learning the matchup slowly after today's games. Any further help would be appreciated, thanks!!

This is going to sound really dumb, but use d-air. I'm not exactly too sure why or how it works, but it does. Wobbles can back me up on this and give more insight to the inner workings behind it. Also retreating f-airs (extremely uncharacteristic of IC otherwise) works exceptionally well against WD approaches. Don't shield grab, it's silly. u/b-airs outta shield against short hopped aerials in between attacks. If you're not in position for either, wavedash away outta shield and give yourself time to think.

Be sure to make good use of your u-airs and smashes. Avoid d-smashes unless you can blatantly punish something. Luigi's recovery is extremely easy to predict. Don't be afraid to go out there and b-air his over b. Ledge hog when you know his down b is spent. I've seen countless Luigi's make it back cause of scurred ICs, silly thing to miss.

thanks so much azn_lep that helps a lot!

i can understand why dair works. it works against jigglypuff and even peach sometimes because it pushes them away. sometimes even if Luigi CC (which isn't too often if the dair isn't predictable) i'm guessing he can even be pushed away because of his traction. dair is good against floaties so it could work against luigi... i think i'm just "scurred" of his priority when i approach lol.

soo... fsmash, fairs, dairs, uairs, no shield-grabbing.... anything else?

this thread is helping a lot

oh as for counterpicking, I don't care what character you are I almost always counter pick Luigi on Jungle Japes. The majority of Luigi's KO potential are to the ceiling: u-smash, n-air, d-smash, f-smash (on occasion) you get the point. So that's helpful. On top of that ICs can squall under the platforms for a tricky recovery to the center stage; also pretty cool. Lastly, Japes ***** Luigi. Sure his over b is gonna cover some horizontal distance, but at some point in his recovery he's going to up-b and try and sweet spot the ledge. The river makes this hilarious.

edit: as for the d-air thing, it works. be it priority, speed, or set knock back; it helps out a lot. I guess when you're fast falling it you can link d-air, jab, f-smash/grab depending on his DI. And although is sounds noobish to use d-air when coming from above Luigi (which will happen due to the nature of his smashes) if you connect a fast fell d-air, you'll be able to avoid a string of combos.

ic are also very bad on japes though; the luigi could blindly pick, say peach, and even with no experience, give you a serious run for your money =\

np i'm pretty good at that stage myself.

ic's are not THAT bad at the stage. it's just that some characters (like falco, dk, falcon, peach) are incredibly good there, that's all.
