The Japanese Tournament layout

Ok, well my friend just went onto the japanese equivalent of smashboards and found that there is a different tournament layout over there compared to America and Europe, and I was wondering how well known this is. I was also wondering what people thought about this system over ours, possible advantages, disadvantages etc.

1) First, there are pools. Each pool match is played best of one, on a random stage either dreamland or FD.

2) then, the best two (or a number set by the TO) go onto the A class brackets.
The rest of the smashers go onto a B class bracket

The rest is played like a double elimination, but only those who progress to the A class bracket have a chance of winning the pot.
I guess the B class participants play for pride.

Also, I believe they have an alternative to our blind character pick rule. To begin with, both players choose a character. Then they keep on counter picking until they are both happy with the characters chosen. If a decision cannot be made, characters are picked blindly.

I personally dont agree with this blind pick alternative, way too time consuming in my opinion.

In general, I feel that, though this tournament format will take more time, it gives those who cannot compete at a high level a chance to get some all important tournament experience, and pool matches are best of 1 to compensate for the extended bracket procedure.

So what do you guys think, would any of you adopt a format like this for you're tournaments? Anything that strikes you as being a good idea to implement in our format?

If pools were a best of 3 that would be better. I think that eliminates any factor of luck. But I actually kind of like this format.

I was told that it is common in Japan that you have to stick to the character you choose from start to finish of the tournament. Maybe that's just happens to be how most Japanese players play.

The problem with that ofcourse is the time constraints, i suppose BO3 wouldnt make the tournament drastically longer but many tournaments are pushed for time enough as it is, having a second group of double elimination will only make things longer

Problem2: I can assure you that that is a myth, many people in Japan counterpick, just like we do, although it may be fair to say that each individual on average doesnt play as much of a spread of characters as we do, I think they have more refined choices of characters

the secondary bracket is meaningless; it's much more important to make sure you properly determine who gets into the 'real' bracket

which is why we have the system we use in america

it gives more people chances to play and still be in a competition even if they make it out of pools

funner

fun matters at a tourny, esp. for ppl who dont make it out of pools

the whole point of pools is to give that competition

and if there's nothing at stake, how is that even competitive?
