The future in 39 years

I was hanging out with a friend of mine today and he started telling me he was reading a scifi book from the 60's (let just say 1960 to make simple). Anyway he said the book takes place in 1999 and every person has telepathic abilities. He Also said they were talking about the newest model of record player (or something like that). After hearing this i started ridiculing the author for such a unrealistic look into a future that was just 39 years away from when he wrote the book. My friend asked me what i thought the world would be like in 39 years. I told him similar to how it is now but better technology, everything faster and smaller up to a point. I said things will change but most likely not is a drastic way like telepathic abilities.

So here comes the point to the thread: what do u think things will be like in 39 years and what are your thoughts on books and other media that predict the somewhat near future having drastic changes?

edit: in my prediction that the future wont be drastically different i meant assuming that the world does not go south in these 39 years

edit edit: also my friend playing the devils advocate tried to defend the author by saying that drastic changes had happened. I agreed with this and used the internet as an example, but then i said that everyone gaining psychic powers is far more of a ridicules and drastic change to happen to mankind withing the small time frame of 39 years. (my friend also said it was written during the time of the jetsons. i then pointed out that that may be true but the jetsons wa a cartoon and was suppose to be funny not a true prediction plus its further in the future)

Also if anyone here is a crystalis fan i compared the authors predictions to the makers of that game (a game that came out in 1990 for anyone who does not know) the opening of the game says something like 1997 oct 1 the end day. ( still a amazing game)

I was skimming through it, and while I do believe a lot can happen in 39 years, I doubt we'd see a futuristic-looking world as portrayed in media, like The Jetsons, Batman Beyond, Bicentennial Man, etc.. I can see technology having evolved greatly though. We went from tube TVs back in 2000 to HD flat screens in 2010 (well, technically HD TVs were introduced earlier, but still). Cell phones have evolved greatly as well, with the ability to go online, and other interesting features.

39 years down the road, phones will have evolved so greatly. I honestly can't even imagine how greatly they'll have evolved, to be honest. TVs will probably be holograms (and by extension, gaming as well). Medical science - assuming stem cells become a popular thing in the future - will be especially advanced, being able to cure ailments that are currently not so curable today, and I predict lifespans will be increased exponentially, from 70 to an average of maybe 90 or 100... maybe even more.

Transportation will be advanced, though I don't know how advanced it will be. There's the whole hybrid thing, as well as making renewable fuel (which is possible). Eventually, there will be no fossil fuels to really work with, so either humanity will need to find a new form of energy/fuel, or destroy one another in a war for fossil fuels. If we - as humans - are smart (and I have shaky faith in that part), we'll find renewable energy.

If there's one thing that can be said, is that the only thing predictable about the future is its unpredictability. While the things I've stated will most likely happen, it doesn't necessarily mean they will.

As long as we don't reach peak Oil, Copper, or Iron, I can see us making large advancements in a variety of ways.

Really, people underestimate the fact that metals will eventually run out too. Copper is already horribly expensive.

Well I've read a lot of things about the society these days.. and about how it separates us from being who we truly are. To me, the society is a system that dumbfounds us in a way to make us forget and condition us in a way to prevent actual growth as a person. I mean do you realize how many things there are to make us buy ****ty food with simply the suggestion of it on TV.. like oh that cake looks damn good, I'll go buy one. Or how many things there are to keep us "entertained". You really don't go anywhere with all that, eventually if you don't pursue your love then you will become depressed/insane.. wtv you want.

I've also read that we were supposed in these times to all be connected in someway.. connected in a way where everyone understands each other. I think it's possible to achieve something like that but we are so far off because of a lot of different reasons. So ya, in another 39 years.. who the hell knows.. the earth could be hell or it could continue to flourish, but that really depends on us. Resources are not infinite, the earth can backlash at all of us if it feels too abused eventually. =P

That's what i have to say to this.

I predict it will be possible to somehow record somebody's mind. This will be not be all too common due to ethical standards that go with it, but I believe that somebody who studies the brain will find a way to link the elctrodes or synapses to record a thought. I won't be perfect, but something will be made out from it.

If humans haven't quite figured out the brain to that extent there will at least be a heavy advance in reducing alzheimer's or dementia. The brain is just one of those organs humans don't know a great deal about. If recording thoughts and memories ever becomes a possibility that would be horrible and I hope that never happens.

The water level will increase, everyone will hang in Ships and have amazing adventures. :001:

Phones won't be the "phones" we know anymore, that's for sure.

50 Terrabytes would be the "common" thing that anyone will have in their USB sticks and stuff. Or some non-sense like that.

We will have something like the internet but a "stronger" one and better one but with some restrictions that won't let us download music just like we do nowaways. That's a maybe
A lot of words in different languages will have a "meaning" change or would be written different thanks to How we type everyday on the internet, chats and stuff. Also some words would be common use IRL Situations, like people saying "LOL, Lmao and IMO" as example. Which is starting to happen, I sometimes say "IMO" IRL
I will have 61 Years. :(

I would assume that it's going to be just like now only with much, much better tech. I doubt that the way we live our lives will be drastically changed in that time. I think that by that point, as Divinokage said, TV will be holograms and phones will be pocket computers (hell, a lot of phones are already).

I don't think we'll be seeing anything like Batman Beyond or Ghost in the Shell until the end of the century.

I think as far as computers goes, I think Cloud Computing will become the norm, and data will be stored online instead of locally. The combination of virtual computing and this idea of online data storage makes for some interesting ideas. I'm guessing that virtually all aspects of life will become transparent, because access to everything will be probably be possible on any device.

As a frequent traveler, I'd love for there to be even faster methods of travel. I have a lot of international experience, so visiting friends around the world easily would be something I'd love to do.

Simple, I will have taken the world over and rebuilt it in my own glorious image, and crush everyone who does not obey my laws.

Either that or we'll just have better tech stuff.
