The circle pad and Smash Bros

So for anyone that actually owns a 3DS, one thing you know is that the circlepad is actually kind of resistive to movement in that it's very snappy (quick to snap to center). I feel by now most of us are at least pretty adept at being as fast as we can in smash games. How do you think the circlepad will affect movement, tilts, dash dancing, dashing in general. Yknow, general fluency of gameplay?

With the circlepad, I'm not sure "breaking it in" is a option either because of its design. I've played mk7 since launch and it's still almost day 1 quality.

The circle pad scares me.

When playing Smash 4 for the 3DS, I'm going to just use the dpad for character movement. I've gone through too many gamecube controllers to know that the 3DS circle pad would not hold out for long, and is a huge pain to replace if broken.

I don't care if it hinders my control like the Wiimote-only controls like in Brawl. I'm only going to be playing Smash 3DS for fun and to pass time while I'm out and about, not competitively.

Considering 3DS will likely be my "for fun" version of the game and I don't really use the circle pad in most games, I can't say I'm worried about it. If I can't play at my best without an analog stick, so be it. Not like any remotely serious tournament will be run on 3DS Smash, right?

The circle pad is responsive and comfy but the lack of an octagon gate makes it feel kind of weird for Smash imo.

Quick tip: If you're picking it up for the first time and it's feeling kind of weird on you, just pretend/practice dash dancing left and right as quick as you can on the stick and you'll get comfortable real fast.

The only problem I have with the circle pad is that it's annoying to hold a direction for a really long time (walking through town in animal crossing). I don't think that will be too much of an issue with Smash4, though. I think fast movements will be something we can get used to from playing the game for a while.

dpad could either be the taunt option or it may be customizable so that you can make it a smash-pad similar to a cstick (without the tilting options and all of that jazz that came with the cstick).

Isn't there any adapter for the 3ds like a GC like controller or sth? I'd rather place the 3ds on a desk and play with a controller then ripping off the buttons...

Something might be made, dunno. Smash will definitely take a toll on the 3DS, despite the handheld going back to Nintendium standard. Seriously I've dropped the thing like 5 times and I'm like 6'2, that's not a short fall for a handheld.

I'm honestly not sure if they'll allow the Dpad to be used for smash 4, it'd definitely be a good choice all things considered.

How about people actually try the game with the Circle Pad before complaining about it? It'll likely be alright to play with, which is perfectly fine for a portable version of a console game. Hopefully they'll allow the Circle Pad Pro and customisable controls, that way you might be able to get a modded CPP with a GameCube stick if you really hate the controls of Smash 4 on 3DS. I know some Japanese Monster Hunter players went insane on some of their modded versions (http://www.destructoid.com/check-these-3ds-circle-pad-pro-mods-from-japan-252233.phtml) and it definitely shows that control modification is possible on the 3DS in some form.

I really wish that by now, the directional pad could be used to move your character on not just the Wii Remote, but on ALL the control schemes. If you've played Kirby Super Star, you had to tap the directional pad twice left or right to dash, and that's something that the Super Smash Bros. series can actually learn from.

People will want to play differently. I say as always - full customization. If people want to get that 2nd stick, fine, let them use them. If someone wants to run with the d-pad, let them. Letting people play the way they want is a given in my book.

I don't think there are really going to be any problems for me since I will have the tilt jump off. In all honestly it seems easier to actually tilt the circle pade then a control stick for me. And for those wondering how a control pad would work for moving and doing smash attacks, press it once to walk the side you want and press it twice to run the side you want same goes for attacks, for tilt attacks you press it once the side and for smash attacks you press it twice. Which sounds pretty good also, if they allow you to use the bad to move as well as the control stick I will use the one that just feels more comfortable to use as both right now seem like they could be good. lol

Used it for Street Fighter, and to "dash" felt kind of weird.

Since Wavedashing isn't even confirmed/not likely to appear. I guess that won't play a factor at all will it ahahaa!

Won't work since it makes the character go into a run.

Seriously though,it's not hard to understand, there won't be any problem.Just press the direction and the attack button at the same time. How are people seeing problems?Or can't I see them?

Ermm I presume you are talking about the Dpad in the last sentance. If I'm not mistaked wouldn't that make it to where you can't difrentriate between Tilt Attacks and Smash Attacks. It's been a good while since I played with the Wiimote sideways and forgot how it handled Tilt Attacks and Smash Attacks. :/

No,I did mean the CirclePad.Tilts are usually done by just pressing slowly a direction/pressing a direction before the attack button(wich is how sideway Wiimote works) or not fully pressing said direction(pressing about half of it). Both of these make it possible to Smash by pressing both the Attack button and the direction suddenly and/or at the same time.

Oh, the thing people are having about the Circle Pad is that it can get twitchy for them, I use to have that problem myself and still lightly do when trying to slide to the right and I end up sliding it up slightly with meaning to but having Jump Titlt off will make that a no issue. What people are talking about is how movement and attack would work on the Dpad if they made the Dpad as a option with movement. But the reason people fear the Cicrcle Pad is because it can get twitchy for them for the most part. When I said press it twice to attack I was talking about performing a Smash Attack on the Dpad, and though that makes you run also it is ni different on the Circle Pad as you have to slide hard and press the attack button to preform a Smash Attack which should also make you run but it doesn't, which should work for the Dpad also, press once and hold to walk and pres once and hit attack button to preform a tilt attack, press twice and hold to run and press twice and hit attack butto to preform a smahs attack. I was just trying to answer peoples question about how the Dpad would work for preforming smash attacks and all that. o.o

I was just trying to answer peoples question about how the Dpad would work for preforming smash attacks and all that. o.o Of course, but I just think there are even simplier ways to go.

Am I the only one who's left hand cramps after playing 3DS for a while? It cramps at the base of my thumb, palm side. I honestly can't see myself being able to play more than a few matches in one sitting on this thing. I have this problem on both sizes of the 3DS

If the CPP is usable, I will use that for movement, cause it will be easier to replace (but hard to get used to).

Lol I am just really hoping that they come out with some sort of grip with a real analog stick on the left and right :D

If that happened, how would you close your 3DS.
