Some of you may remember that I was seeking help awhile ago for my computer. Well, it's fixed now and I would just like to know what I can do to protect myself in the future. Is there any virus protection in particular that any of you would suggest? Preferably one that is free. :D

The best protection against viruses is common sense.

If that fails, windows firewall is already a great program

And if a virus gets through, than scan with a program like malwarebytes or superantispyware.

Microsoft security essentials is also good, it usually picks up malware before it can infect your computer.

As super_ness has said, linux is a great way to avoid viruses. It is not guaranteed, but it is much better.

I'd recommend Avast! antivirus and Malwarebytes' anti-malware, I run both and they work great
And just to be on the safe side, search up rkill. It's not a malware removal tool, but it shuts the processes down so you can boot up your antivirus program

all three are free, though iirc avast and malwarebytes both have 'pro' versions...the free versions work just fine, though

Sorry if this is a bit late, but I recommend VIPRERESCUE. It's a command line executable that is pretty lightweight and scans every file for malware. The Viprerescue Scanner is free, I'll link you: http://live.sunbeltsoftware.com/ It's especially good for when malware doesn't allow users to open programs. Oh, it's also FREE

Also, now that I think of it, I may have bookmarked a site where I found a list of free anti-malware programs.

Edit: dang, sorry, it's not specifically for malware, but here is the list, I have a few of the programs: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/A7XbDb/www.sunbeltsoftware.com/stu/tools/

Spybot - Search and Destroy has gotten me out of countless situations where other antivirus scanners fails. I recommend it to anyone!
