For the record I don't think the melee community killed brawl... I think the brawl community killed itself. Brawl was a VERY popular game competitively, people like to shrug that off, but it was on MLG too. It had tournaments that rival the numbers we are seeing for melee now.
.
So, just to do a quick check on that, I went to ssbwiki. (Which granted, might not have 100% correct information). I'm not really sure what the "Golden Age" of Brawl would be considered, but 2010 has the most Nationals including the MLG's, so I'm going to go by that.

Brawl 2010:
Pound 4 - 192
Whobo 2 - 107
MLG Orlando - 174
MLG Columbus - 250
Apex 2010 - ???
MLG Raleigh - 148
MLG DC - 174
MLG Dallas - 181.
Average (Excluding Apex data that I could not find) - 175.

Melee 2014:
Apex 2014 - 629
BEAST 4 - 160
ROM 7 - 113
GoML - 238
RoF 3 - 192
Pat's House 2 - 162
SKTAR 3 - 237
Super SWEET - 165
SSS Lock-in - 112
MLG Anaheim - 325
CEO 2014 - 262
KoC 4 - 208
Evo 2014 - 970
And there are a few more to come.
Average - 281. Also, there are going to be more than double the amount of nationals by the end of the year.

Even eliminating the outliers for Melee (SSS, Rom7, Evo, Apex), you get an average of 217.

I don't think he was putting down Brawl's numbers. He was merely saying that they barely compared to Melee's numbers even when taking out "outliers".

I merely meant to objectively compare the numbers, and I'll let you guys draw whatever conclusions you want from them.
