THE Austin tourneys!

Alright all you stoners and dozers and shroomers and fumers. Listen up, there's no Austin tournaments being posted here on smashboards so I am going to start this thread. I am willing to host tourneys at my apartment on the weekends and maybe some week days. But, hopefully we can find a nice house to host because my apartment sucks *** and I am moving in about a month into another apartment, hopefully that one will be a little better at least. Anyway, enough about that. On to the SMASHING!!!

Here's the first Austin tourney:
8pm till whenever people leave, my apartment
1305 Cinco St. Apt 210 (austin) - zip 78704

$5 1v1
$5 2v2

and maybe one more with free for all or items or whatever we want to do, more of a fun tourney, that will give more people a chance go deeper in the tourney.

Ummm... banned stages, uh.... definitely the uh... metroid brinstar depths one... and... all those other sucky ones, we'll figure it out once everyone's here! Please bring a tv and gamecube or wii and we can get multiple rounds going if you want, otherwise it will be one match at a time I suppose. So that's about it I guess? Let me know if I left anything too important out, because this is my first time trying to get a tourney together.

Okay, here's the deal with Austin tournaments.

As we've explained before, Austin doesn't have tournaments because it doesn't have venues. So you've tried to counteract this problem by creating a venue in your place. The problem there is that it's not big enough, and no one's going to come from out of town. Since no one will be coming from out of town, no one from Austin's going to come, either.

Why? Because we all play every week for free. There's no way we're going to pay to fight each other. We tried that once, as a sort of Austin fund raiser (which means a fund raiser for Wes and, to a lesser extent, Jordan), and 6-8 people showed up, including the Austin regulars. It's a waste of time to try it. No one here will care unless you can get people who aren't from here, and then you'd have to get lots of them, because otherwise we could just get together like normal and have the guests join in. For free.

Now, regarding Austin rankings, you'll find that that's absolutely not going to happen, because it wouldn't matter. The good players generally know the rankings, and the good players are the ones who matter. You'll notice that Texas no longer has a power ranking system; this is largely the result of Austin-based panelists. All you really need to know is that Wes is (especially was) the best, and then there's Jordan, and after that, they get too close to make numbers matter. Everyone will have a different opinion.

I'm glad the new people around here are active, I suppose, but I want to encourage you all to think before you build these grand plans. We've been a cohesive community for the last 2-3 years, so if something hasn't happened by now, there's probably a decent reason for it.

That being said, Galt > Xelic, Gurren Lagann > Chang, rib-pokes > Rayzorium, and Bowser > Wes. I think that covers it for the rankings.

And, does nobody have a house to use as a hosting place?? Everybody live in apartments or what?

Uhm. Starboard, you are coming off as a total jerk. Galt pretty much just set it out straight for you...he wasn't being mean about it, so there's no reason to act like a total *** to him.

Also, he's completely right. Have you been to a tourney before? Attempting to throw a tourney in someone's apartment with 1 TV amounts to failure, unless you want to take 5 hours to get through a single round of brackets. Even if you have a few more setups, there really isn't enough room, and people are going to get annoying.

If you are convinced that people are going to come, then high five, go for it. Galt was just trying to explain to you that it might be difficult to get a successful tourney together, seeing as how most of the Austin players already have a set time/place for Smashfests every week free of charge.

We had a good time and we did have two tvs setup so it wasn't THAT bad. I was going to post a pic of immortal rain with his cash in hand but he didn't want me to, lol. Anyways, I am going to have more festive tourneys here on saturday, hopefully we will have more than just the 1v1 this time. And maybe THREE tvs, lol. is that good enough for you austin smashers? We had 8 people... and i'm quite certain immortal rain enjoyed the tournament, how could he not? Ummmmmmmmm............ so that about wraps it up, feel free to come by on saturday any time for some smashin! I am thinking of starting an austin crew too... so maybe we can get some crew battles going....... if y'all are down for that.

i agree wombat, why can't the austin smash scene be as cool as san antonio, or dallas, or even Waco!!! lol

there's plenty of beer here too :D
btw, you don't have to come here to play in the cash tourneys we can have side games going for fun...

Go around Texas and get some random battles. Once you level up, maybe collect some items or a few gil, then come back and find a venue and host a tourney. Otherwise change the title.

Hey guys I was wandering if some one could tell me where you guys have your "weekly free smashfests" if it would be OK for me to come that is.

it's usually Fridays starting at around 4 - 4:40 PM at the University of Texas at Austin, specifically in the Jester dormitory. You go to the "Jester West" section of the dormitory, and once you enter this area, you immediately look left and you'll see a set of stairs. Descend the stairs and go through the doors. Walk forward about 10 feet and look left, and that entire area will be brimming with smash players.

Once you get to UT Austin and find a parking space, simply ask someone for where Jester is. Once you get to Jester, simply ask for where "Jester West" is. The rest is easy.

and if they tell you the Jester Basement, they are wrong. When I first showed up I frantically ran around looking for a B (for basement) sign and passed them up by accident lol.
