Tether Grabs?

I know this is a stupid question that has likely been answered many times before. However! I'm trying to get a hold on lucas' tether grab. I have two main questions -- One, when exactly can it be used? It seems that for me, about half the time (and the half that I actually need to tether), I instead airdodge when I press Z. Secondly, is lucas' tether actually shorter than someone like Sheik's? The object looks shorter, but I've had some seemingly long tethers using lucas.

The tether itself is a ropesnake, it stretches to a certain lenth.

If you're in the tumble animation, you need to either airdodge out of it or wiggle out (by moving the control stick back and forth quickly) before you can tether. That's why you are airdodging instead.

You'll find the same to be true with samus's tether (not ZSS)

its weird that for a tether, its grab range is pretty short...pretty much DK's grab is about the length of the ropesnake...but since Lucas is a good in your face fighter, it catches players offguard, buts it really weird how it magically extends nearly twice its original length to grab the ledge

Lol. Tuckahoe?!?!? (check Pkboy89's location) Yea, the ropesnake actually has decent range, i like it more than link's clawshot since it has little lag.

zss can tether with freaking everything... her up+B, grab, side+B... it's madness!! not sparta!!
