Even if, to this day, Nintendo is "kiddy", they still make my favorite games and consoles. So yes, I care.

I got interested in Smash Bros. because I played older games like Mario Bros. All-Stars, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid and the first two Metroid Primes, Link to the Past, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, Pokemon (Red to Crystal), StarWing, Donkey Kong Countries 1-3. The whole mashup thing was pretty cool.

Ultimately, I haven't played other Nintendo games since Twilight Princess. Mario just doesn't do it for me, and Link games seem very rudimentary to me given my exposure to RPGs. And don't get me started on that Metroid: Other M debauchery...

I've played Fire Emblem: Awakening, but that's about it. Smash continues my Nintendo interests, but I'm playing far too many non-Nintendo games to check the 187th Mario game.

I am not necessarily a Nintendo fan; prior to Smash I was only invested in Legend of Zelda and Pokemon. I suppose that is still the case as of current despite my efforts to branch out and enjoy new games; however, that was as a result of Smash Brothers.

No. First sign of a misinformed, knows-nothing-about-gaming Nintendo hater, that "200th Mario" stuff.

I suppose I am also a misinformed, "knows-nothing-about-gaming" Nintendo hater as I also assumed that we were on our 100th Mario.
Then you probably are :/ We are on our 17th main series Mario game with 3D World, each one better than the last, also.

Ah, I see. It seems like they release those games twice every year (and their titles are so very similar); however, I also tend to count the spin-off games.

Edit- I was reading this list. There are 148 titles that include Mario in the name, that is not saying much (as some are remakes or variations). It just really contributes to the mentality that there is an over-saturation of Mario. It makes him feel so much more redundant.

I knew Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and Pokemon before I played Melee. That's about it.

I legitimately did not know that Pokemon was a Nintendo-owned property until I played Smash Bros. The first time I started up Melee and saw Pikachu amongst the cast of characters, I was awestruck.

Would you prefer the rate at which Activision churns out their games?

I was more of a Sega kid growing up, but I played my fair sharing Nintendo in the pre-smash days. Since the Dreamcast went belly up (RIP, you beautiful, beautiful machine) I've been mostly a Nintendo gamer. I'd say Metroid, F-Zero and EarthBound are the big franchises Smash ” introduced” me to.

First, the spin-offs don't count, second, there's no such thing as too much Mario.
Would you prefer the rate at which Activision churns out their games?
Or perhaps the rate at which Valve delivers their long-awaited, fan-requested sequels.

I would have never played the DKC series, Uprising, or Awakening had it not been for smash. I also still need to finish Earthbound, Super Metroid, and Golden Sun. Unfortunately I don't have a Wii U yet.

I enjoy the hyperbolic Mario games comments. Truth be told, there have only been 6 1/2 3D Mario platformers since 1996 vs games that have come out say 2001 such as Halo going on to a 5th game. The only reason Nintendo markets Mario so much is because he sells games. Lots of original ideas they crafted in these spin-offs would have not sold comparatively if it were a new IP. Same thing goes for Kirby: the character is extremely versatile hence why games like Canvas Curse and Mass Attack exists. Kirby's Epic Yarn wasn't even supposed to feature Kirby at all.

Um... yes? Is that a trick question?

They are still Mario games, and I count them. So I do not really care if you do not.

You mean you want 2-9 games per year, depending on how many unnecessary sequels they can? (Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero etc.) They flood the market all right. I'd prefer the Valve method which seems to be just right with smash

Not sure how many people have played it, or even heard of it... but I really wish they'd make a sequel to Gotcha Force that was on the Gamecube.

I personally loved that game so much, rofl. Might even be my favorite game on the Gamecube. Sure the voice acting was bad... but the collection game play, and building your own army of 30 out of so many different units... great fun!

I remember my friends face when I had a Sirius battlecruiser borg appear on the battlefield for the first time to fight them. I loved raining volley's of laser fire down upon them from up above. XD

Just look at this game play video. The different types of units and abilities. An example is his ally, which is a jet type borg, complete with bomb drops, and so forth.

Edit: Go to 7:30 seconds to get an idea on the scale of some attacks on this game, lol. The nuke tank. :p

Super smash brothers was a dream game to me.

Fox, Link, Mario, Pikachu. I was sold, even though I was so young.

I play lots of nintendo games

Pokemon from Red & blue up to current X and Y. Lots of spinoffs too. Pokemon mystery dungeon being really notable.

Legend of zelda, started with Ocarina of time, but went back to play a Link to the past for GBA. Played a good majority of the games. Notable missed ones was oracle of seasons/ages + Zelda 1 + 2. Spirit tracks as well.

Star fox 64, Adventures, and Assault.

No metroid games

Couple of kirby games, most notably Kirby and the crystal shards.

Plenty of mario games but not a majority. Most notable being super mario 64, paper mario TTYD, and Super mario brothers 3. Played a ton of the sport spin offs along with mario kart games.

--------------

Melee comes around and we get some more characters with different franchises.

Still haven't played any earthbound

No ice climbers

No game and watch

Fire emblem awakening is all I've been able to get my hands on.

Played donkey kong country and DK 64 if we're counting those as seperate, (yes I know he was in 64 smash as well)

never played yoshi's island to be honest.

---------------

Brawl.

Haven't done anything with whatever rob is.

Only played MGS1. Was too young so never beat it.

Kid icarus uprising for Pit

No wario games.

------------

Smash 4

I've played a little punch out. Mike tyson's.

Animal crossing for gamecube, DS, and Wii.

I've played lots of megaman games. Only ones I've finished though is Megaman 8 and X. Spinoff credits to finishing Megaman X command mission though.

Haven't played wii fit.

I'm gonna have to say that one of Smash Bros' marketing goals failed with me.

I've never gone and tried a new game series because of Smash Bros. Never played a Fire Emblem game, never F-Zero, Star Fox, etc.

But I've been a fan of plenty of other franchises even without Smash Bros. I've always loved Mario, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby, Sonic, Animal Crossing...yeah. I'd care just as much about those franchises with or without Super Smash Bros.
But no, it doesn't make me go out and try other series, even though I love playing as Ike, Marth, Olimar...

Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Metriod, Pikmin, love em all.
Not a Fire Emblem fan, but pretty much all other franchies have a place inside me.

I can see people only playing or liking Smash Bros. out of all of Nintendo or even own a Nintendo system just for Smash Bros. Otherwise, it's pretty evident that most people play Smash because they are Nintendo fans or learn about Smash through Nintendo.

Anyways, Nintendo is pretty much the only company I play games from nowadays. There is not a single franchise from them I hate or at least understood (Wii Fit, for instance. Understand its appeal. Not my cup of tea.) Their games are just so brilliant that I do consider myself a brand loyalist to them. But hear me out:

Would I buy a new Nintendo system for the promise of more from some of my favorite games? YES
Would I trust Nintendo to buy another system after it flops or doesn't fulfill my wishes? YES
Would I feel okay after Nintendo would swindle me with a certain offer/system/game/etc? NO
Do I buy Nintendo products for their financial benefit only? NO

That being said, part of me wants to expand my interests away from Nintendo because there's some truly brilliant games and technology I'm missing out on. I built a computer to start collecting games on Steam and for games such as LoL or SMITE. Hell, there are many games from the Sony side I want to play and get into. But I don't purchase a PS4 over a Wii U because the hardware wouldn't feel as "rewarding" in the long run because only so many of their games appeal to me, at least.

I love Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Kirby, and Animal Crossing the best. Would love to get more into Fire Emblem as well. <3

Clearly somebody has a problem with understanding an exaggeration when they see it. The point of my remark was to emphasise that Mario has been an extremely long-running franchise, and more often than not has been primarily the same game repeated, as would any other franchise that has lasted as long as Mario has.

Also, simply because I don't play Nintendo games as vehemently as I used to doesn't lump me in as a hater. It's this "rush-to-the-defence" philosophy that makes the current ugly console wars foster an equally ugly community. Can't we own all three consoles and like all of them at once?

Oh god yes, I love so many Nintendo series, the only I really don't care much for is Mario (idk, the games are great but I can't get into them). Love them all and even love Sony and SOME MS games

Technically, the rate at which Call of Duty has been released, though deplorable, wouldn't be anywhere near the same amount. However, Mario is able to make so many games because it was a pioneer for video gaming in general. Call of Duty contributed next-to-nothing on the face of things, it just brought in RPG elements that had already been floating around in Counter Strike.

They are still Mario games, and I count them. So I do not really care if you do not.
I agree. That's like saying that the Call of Duty mobile game doesn't count. If you slap a title on it that alludes to an established franchise in order to help it sell, I consider it part of that subsequent franchise. George Lucas made that awful Star Wars Holiday Special that he wants everyone to forget, but it's still part of the Star Wars franchise.

Yeah, they do. Most of the time they do. How else do you think they would have got into the series? Before someone says gameplay, that comes *after* getting into the games.

i'm a prime example with owning almost 100 gamecube games don't look at me

The bad side of this is that some players believe because they're great at Smash Bros means they know everything about the characters featured within the game. One well-known player last year at a tournament didn't even know that when Kirby eats another fighter, he gains their copy abilities. Or that "Wii Fit isn't on Wii U" even though the game was announced in 2011 alongside the initial reveal of the console. And I'm sure people have came across many situations such as this. But I digress.
My sentiments exactly. I think Roy in Melee is a good example with that kind of attitude, and if I had to ask: Do most people want Roy to be back in Smash just because he was in Melee? Or because of his appearance and personality in the Fire Emblem games? I'm going to be honest here, but it bugs me a little that people want him back just solely because of the former.

But yeah, Super Smash Bros. introduced me to a lot of Nintendo franchises like Zelda, Metroid, Pikmin, and Fire Emblem, and I only knew Mario, Pokémon, and Kirby before then. I'm really glad to have known these franchises because they're kind of like an expansion of the games I used to play.

And to be honest I'm a little disappointed in Mario Kart 8. The game looks phenomenal and plays very well in single player but.. there's no excuse for the multiplayer mode's lower FPS rate. And the Koopalings/Pink Gold Peach aren't a good replacement for Dry Bones, Diddy Kong, Birdo and more deserving/recognizable/liked/distinguishable characters. It feels like they lost touch with most of the fanbse sometimes. MKWii was my favorite, though, it felt like the most full game in the series thus far.
Eh? You're probably talking about content, but objectively Mario Kart Wii's actually one of the worse and least balanced Mario Kart games. Also, two-player split screen at 60 FPS is a significant improvement over Mario Kart Wii's two-player split screen at 30 FPS. Four-player split screen has always been the same, which is capped at 30 FPS each screen.

Probably like most on who've posted here, I've been surrounded by Nintendo before Smash and after Smash.

Started with Super Mario 64 at the age of ~4 to ~5 (My Mom would play and I'd watch, she ended up beating the last level).

Mario Kart a year later when I started figuring out how to play Video Games (Mom and Dad once again, Dad loves Mario/Pac-man)

Once I started growing accustomed to how video games worked, I branched off from the "Tree of Nintendo" into things such as...

1) Legend of Zelda (OoT -> Majora's -> LTTP -> Wind Waker -> SS -> LBWs )*
2) Star Fox (Star Fox: Assault)**
3) Pokemon (Yellow -> S/G -> E -> D/Pl -> B/W2 -> Y)***
4) Smash Bros (Melee -> 64 -> Brawl)****

* - As a being around 6 years old, I didn't really understand much of games. Luckily, a family friend of mine (Well two) introduced me to games such as The Legend of Zelda, starting with Ocarina and then Majora's, after like 2 - 3 years, I started looking for more Zelda, buying LTTP -> WindWaker -> Skyward Sword & the new Link Between Worlds. Sadly, I did miss Twilight Princess, don't know if I'll go ahead and get a copy anytime soon though.
(Looks great, just have other things to look forward to, namely Smash Bros 4 and other IPs)

** - Only played one Star Fox game, don't really know much about him but I remember getting into the planes and shooting down my friends in the GameCube. Multiplayer was quite entertaining for me.

*** - Pokemon... I collected the cards... found out there was games... Need I say more?

**** - Smash Bros was really interesting as I saw so many new characters that I didn't know about, started with Melee as the GameCube was the console where I started looking for games myself.

I don't have much history as many of you might have, however, this is pretty much my gaming in a nutshell.

The few non-nintendo games I've played were suggested games by previously mentioned Family Friends.

Shadow of the Colossus
Kingdom Hearts

And I got myself into:

Shin Megami Tensei / Persona series
MMOs (Stuff, don't really play any atm however)

After getting into Smash Bros: Brawl I was introduced to Kirby, Fire Emblem and Kid Icarus.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd assume that most Smash Bros players have history with Nintendo or still currently play Nintendo games.

I've been stuck with my PS3 and Vita, playing Persona whenever I feel the need to play games.

Though I do have a 3DS with FE:A, Pokemon Y, OoT Remake, Kid Icarus: Uprising

My 64 and Cube are sadly no longer...

Planning on getting the Wii U soon, I'd go ahead and buy the Mario Kart bundle, but I need to wait for summer to roll in so I can find myself a part time job or something....
