Today, on 8/13/2014, our beloved Target Smash has been confirmed to not be returning...

"There are three sub-modes in the Stadium: Multi-Man Smash, Home-Run Contest and the all-new Target Blast."

The hype train is starting to slow down... :(
Though of course, this has only been deconfirmed for the 3DS version. Still though, how could Sakurai do this to us? And to make it worse, Mii Fighters in Multi-Man Smash.

I kind of figured. Between the "Target Blast!" mode and this
targretttt.gif

it was pretty much inevitable.

How do we know it's not a WiiU specific mode?

Better be on the Wii U version, always been my favorite sub-mode.

It would make sense, as the Brawl-style break the targets is kind of forgettable and making individualized courses for each character is much harder to do when you have a 50-character roster.

Oh, wow! I never really thought about how much work it'd take, haha. Thanks!

Aw man that sucks if they're not individualized. Target Smash was my favorite minigame in Melee since it made you learn how to use each character. I only learned how to Wall Jump from Young Link's Target Smash.

Sadly, individualized courses for different sub-modes has been one of the casualties of roster expansion. There were roughly the same number of Target Smash courses in Melee as there were Target Smash plus Board the Platforms stages in Smash 64, and in Brawl individualized courses were scrapped altogether. As much as I'd like to see both of them return with individualized courses, 100 separate courses for mini-games is simply not going to happen.

Ugh, I'd rather individual target smash than a bigger roster...

I'm willing to put my money down on the fact that it's gonna be out for Wii U. They've announced almost no modes, and from what I can tell they're not putting the Smash Run or Target Blast on there.

I'm still starting to feel like this game is kinda letting me down though the longer we wait.

It's definitely a possibility. There's a good chance that Stage Builder will be Wii U exclusive so hopefully we'll be able to use it to design Target Smash/Board the Platforms courses in addition to stages for battle and share them via Miiverse. That would let us reexperience the glory of these lost modes without taking up too much development time.

Hey guys,
With the metaknight reveal of today, new information about singleplayer on 3ds was also announced. And it is now confirmed that break the targets is replaced by that bomb minigame (angry birds thingy, yknow).

How do you feel about this? I think it kinda sucks... I loved break the targets (the melee one, brawl's was bad)

Very happy. I hated BTT. It was very tedious and boring for me, and Target Blast seems way more fun.

If it's between this and getting what we got in Brawl, I'd actually prefer this. Target Blast as a replacement of sorts looks reasonably fun and Smash Run has a simplified Break the Targets challenge behind some doors. :)

I am pretty sure Break The Targets will be in the Wii U version. Smash Run has BTT segments in it hence why they probably left the mode out of the 3DS version, and Target Blast is most likely not going to be in the Wii U version leaving space for BTT.

@ Aunt Jemima Aunt Jemima 's thread moved to the 3DS section.
@ LoneWolfRanger LoneWolfRanger 's thread has been merged into this one. It was on the right forum, but the former thread did come first.

We'll await further information on plans for the Wii U version. They could have a "Make a Break" mode, where you can design your own obstacle courses or something, so we'll reserve judgment.

If it really is gone.. aw. :( It may not have been my favorite mode, but Smash isn't Smash enough without it.

I DO Think the Wii-U version will have it, though. And if we are lucky, the reason they decided to only have it in that version is so they could focus on making it grand again. With a unique Target for every character. :)

I hope.

Maybe that's the sort of thing we could end up seeing as DLC?

In the very least, they should do one unique for each character, but not make it that big or super detailed. Make them look like in Melee for all I care. :p They were fun, even if they looked bad.

Luigi's was the best.

It's complete conjecture to say that individualised courses were scrapped due to roster expansion, for all we know it could have been the fact that there was an extraneous single player mode that ate up a lot of development time and disk space (which is much more likely the reason)

For all we know, the Wii U version could have MMS, BTT and HRC, with BTT having character specific stages due to having more disk space available and the fact that they aren't weighing themselves down with a ridiculous single player mode.

This may be grasping at straws, but there's always the chance that it's unlockable. Boss Battles was an unlockable Stadium mode in Brawl.

True, but yeah, I really doubt Target would be unlockable suddenly. I feel it most likely IS gone. :(
I'm more disappointed Event Mode is supposedly gone.
... Damn, forgot about Event. I love Event Match much more than Target. This is aweful. D:

Still hoping the Wii-U version will have Target and Event!

Yeah, I think that if Event was still in, it would've been on the website in the solo section. How disappointing...

I personally think they have focused on this whole Smash Run thing too much.

Yeah. While I Think Smash Run seems neat... I don't like it killing off Target AND Event. :( Event Match is my favorite side thing in Smash.

Maybe we are lucky, and Event is simply not placed with those Modes, simply.

Event was never placed within Stadium before, it's always had it's own section. And we haven't heard of it before so that's likely why it's not on the site just yet. Everything else was already revealed through a PotD or through Famitsu.

You sure Event isn't with the Stadium games? It's been some time, I forget. XD

My bad then. But yay, Events have a chance~

Though of course, this has only been deconfirmed for the 3DS version. Still though, how could Sakurai do this to us? And to make it worse, Mii Fighters in Multi-Man Smash.
It's at least better than having characters that you can't even play as without hacking.

While I don't know for a fact the reason why individualized courses were taken out, it's worth noting that this process started in Melee with the elimination of Board the Platforms and the courses that went along with that, even before Brawl and Subspace Emissary came along. It's possible Sakurai got rid of BTP for other reasons, but it was certainly more engaging than the trophy collecting mode that replaced it. Certainly it's possible to have individualized BTT courses on the Wii U, but it'll take up roughly twice the time Melee's courses did, and that would have to be doubled if BTP came back, and considering how that time could go to other new game modes, you're forced to make some tough choices as to what should and shouldn't be prioritized. It's at least a consideration, though if Sakurai feels it's important enough, he could definitely pull off individualized target smash courses.

I would have said the removal of BTP was more likely due to adding a ton more single player modes like adventure mode, event mode, HRC and Multi-man than just roster expansion or trophies. And in Brawl you had SSE taking up a massive amount of time, resources and disk space as well as a new boss rush mode and co-op versions of older modes.

With the removal of certain single player modes in Sm4sh I can definitely see them spending more time on BTT.
