Tag Team Matches in Brawl

Tag Team: Choosing between two and three characters, each with their own individual health and lives, and switching freely between them throughout the match.

Tag team matches have actually been a staple for the fighting genre. Many of the most highly regarded fighting games use this idea with a great deal of success, for example King of Fighters, Marvel vs. Capcom, Tekken Tag Tournament, and Naruto. While Smash Bros is far from a traditional fighter, I can't think of any reason why this couldn't be easily implemented into the formula. I wouldn't dream of suggesting that they replace regular single character matches with these, it would make for some interesting event matches, and maybe even a special Vs. mode that people will actually want to play. It would be a nice alternative to having all the characters on the stage at all times.

I imagine it would really only work with 2 characters, each with evenly distributed lives. A simple press left or right on the d-pad could have your character instantaneously switched out for another. It could even be easily mixed with the traditional, single-character style. For example, one player could choose Metaknight and Kirby, each with 2 stock, against a lone Snake with 4 stock. I couldn't even begin to imagine the insane new play styles and combos that would emerge from a mode like this. If nothing else, it would be a great way of tripping up your opponent and forcing them to change their game (especially for Bowser/Fox players like me). The addition of a mode like this would certainly add a whole new type of strategy to the Smash Bros formula and would no doubt be a hit at tournaments and amoung expert players.

What do you think? Should it be added as a Special Vs. Mode? An always-available alternative to using a single fighter? The worst idea you've ever heard? Post away!

i honestly must say i love this idea. watching vids of MvC2 are so awesome. being able to switch your character mid fight is an awesome concept that has already passed the test of time.but if this mode happens, to cut down on game time, each charater should have only 1-2 stock depending on how many characters you pick. 2 stock per character if you pick only 2 characters and 1 each if you pick 3...peace

I like the concept idea as being a mode in vs. because I think that it would make stock matches interesting in that a player could choose 2 characters and choose the number of stocks and once one of your characters loses all their stocks, then a player would still be in the battle and have a chance to turn it around until both of them are out, but in tag team only 2 characters per player would work, although if such a mode would appear which buttons(s) would you press without replacing any that are already used?

i like it, but most people would consider it "real"

i think that most people would still only
consider 1v1 and 2v2 to count for anything
and that tag would be just for fun

but still sounds cool,
there would be the matter of where the
switched in character appears and the 'swapping lag'

i would make it better if you can only switch your
characters when you're on the ground to avoid cheapness

As long as there is like a lag in changing characters. Like it takes 3 seconds to change between them or so... But overall, yeah good idea.

I think a better thing would be allowing 8 fighters, since it is called brawl. 2 teams of 4, or 4 teams of 2. It would be sweet.

I agree with the lag time to make it fair, however I think it would be awesome there were combo swaps. Or hits that have a swap attached to them.

My god....Tekken Tag all over again.

How about they just have it so that each character is assigned 1 stock,so when 1 dies, the other character may come.

But Tag seems to be alittle..ridiculous.

I personally don't like the idea for Smash. Smash is unlike any other fighting game (with few exceptions, Jump Superstarts for example) and is rather popular due to that. So why does everyone want to bring in things from every other generic fighter?

smash isn't good because it's not like any other fighter,
it helps i guess, but there are things that might make the game better

who cares if it's from somewhere else if it's fun, eh?

Your not much for change are you :) Don’t blame you, but The Franchise does have to do something different. yes I understand the hardcore players like ourselves will only be playing one game type certain maps and a handful of rules. But for the general public they need something new. Melee featured a lot of new game modes people never really played. yes I understand Smash is one of the most unique fighters out there and has its own play style. But for the general public and for the people that don’t know about the competitive play it needs a new edge to keep people interested. I like this idea, but I doubt I will play it very much. Unless it is a game type used in competitive play.

Sounds interesting, but only as a Special Brawl. That way, those who want to play it do, and those who don't don't. Everybody wins.:)

I totally agree. The smash series has something unique about it in how different it is from the generic fighting game. Adding common features from run-of-the-mill fighting games would only make Nintendo seem less creative themselves, and make Smash too "normal." This isn't to say they won't do it though. I mean, they did add Stamina to Melee...

Okay, lets set aside "creativity", "honour" and "pride" cause they don't exist in this modern day anymore. I like the idea, I don't think it's GREAT but it does have potential.

It would need to be really thought out well for it to work and have least amount of implimacations for the other guy, IE no endless combos between Zamus and Mr. Metaknight - No possible way for Snake and Link to comeback when hit 500 metres away by a Falcon Punch.

It really needs to be set as a "GOLD STANDARD"

You can't change characters whilst in air after taking a hit.
The lag time to change characters is 3-5 seconds. If interuppted between that time the transformation is cancelled.
If above a certain health percentage you can't change (lets say 150%).

Rules along the lines of that, set down hard and cold.

It is a decent idea, I would love it... Mean's I could actually have TWO mains instead of my Marth and like 5 other characters I'm generally good at.

Marth + Snake sounds good to me :)

It's always been my impression that there's more to the Smash Bros games than simply being an atypical fighting game. It seems more likely the goal is to make the best, most complete game possible based on the unique fighting system. To leave out a mode just because it's common in fighting games would do nothing but limit gameplay possibilities, which is in complete opposition to the idea of the Smash Bros games. Nintendo may do things different, but they do it with the goal of making the highest quality product possible, not just to avoid being "normal".

This concern is an easy fix. Just load up SSBM and ask yourself if this team could make something that could be considered anything but gold standard. I can guarantee you they wouldn't just put the mode in without any thought or consideration to the balance of the game. When you get right down to it, Melee is the most polished, balanced fighter out there. I doubt we'll see any lower standards in any aspect of Brawl. Just have faith that the developers can take an idea as simple as tag team matches and implement it perfectly into the tried and true formula.

A fun idea in Special Melee mode, if done properly! Shouldn't (and won't) replace the standard fighting mechanic, but definitely could be a fun diversion. And if people don't like it, they just won't play it. Seems pretty simple to me.
