Tag Team: Choosing between two and three characters, each with their own individual health and lives, and switching freely between them throughout the match.
Tag team matches have actually been a staple for the fighting genre. Many of the most highly regarded fighting games use this idea with a great deal of success, for example King of Fighters, Marvel vs. Capcom, Tekken Tag Tournament, and Naruto. While Smash Bros is far from a traditional fighter, I can't think of any reason why this couldn't be easily implemented into the formula. I wouldn't dream of suggesting that they replace regular single character matches with these, it would make for some interesting event matches, and maybe even a special Vs. mode that people will actually want to play. It would be a nice alternative to having all the characters on the stage at all times.
I imagine it would really only work with 2 characters, each with evenly distributed lives. A simple press left or right on the d-pad could have your character instantaneously switched out for another. It could even be easily mixed with the traditional, single-character style. For example, one player could choose Metaknight and Kirby, each with 2 stock, against a lone Snake with 4 stock. I couldn't even begin to imagine the insane new play styles and combos that would emerge from a mode like this. If nothing else, it would be a great way of tripping up your opponent and forcing them to change their game (especially for Bowser/Fox players like me). The addition of a mode like this would certainly add a whole new type of strategy to the Smash Bros formula and would no doubt be a hit at tournaments and amoung expert players.
What do you think? Should it be added as a Special Vs. Mode? An always-available alternative to using a single fighter? The worst idea you've ever heard? Post away!
