Hello everyone, for those who aren't familiar with me, my name is ChiboSempai - Super Moderator and Brawl Backroom Member here on Smashboards, and host of the first National Brawl Tournament - Clash of the Titans 4, a learning experience unlike any other. That, combined with plenty of other experience I have, has helped me become the new Director of Tournament Production for the Brawl Back Room, ready and able to guide everyone out there on the in's and out's of both attending and running tournaments.
Running tournaments is no easy task. It takes plenty of time and organization, and if you decide to hold an event you will see how things progressively get harder and harder as you run tournaments with a larger attendance. Don't be scared to jump into the TO scene though, everyone's always looking for tournaments to attend and if you provide what people want, people will come. Bring your own style to the tournament organizer community and offer something others can't. Prove to everyone why your tournaments are the best!
Why should you become a TO? Everyone has their own reasons for wanting to run tournaments. Some see it as a great source of experience, even potentially able to be used on your resume or as something that future employers may want to hear for leadership and organization experience. Many players might want to attend more tournaments, so when there aren't any left to attend soon - they can host their own! Some might find the personal joy of running a tournament a great reward in exchange for the help and service they provide to the community. And lastly, some can see it as a business opportunity. If you need some extra cash, why not do what you love and host tournaments! It's possible to earn some money from doing so, and the better you get at it and the more entrants you attract, the more you can potentially make!
Even though running a tournament is completely in your control, there are some guidelines you should follow to help make the process as hassle free as possible, which is where this thread comes into play. I'm here to guide you, perhaps like a mentor, to get you on your way to hosting successful events! Feel free to use all of the information here, and perhaps even offer some of your own advice. Start off by reading some of the guides, and maybe asking a question or two that can then be featured int he Q&A section.

MLG Orlando has come and gone, and it was quite a tournament! Impressions from the event were largely positive, with it exceeding nearly everyone's expectations. The tournament had some surprising upsets no one saw coming such as the incredible placements of ESAM and BigLou breaking the top 8. ESAM and BigLou are both residents of the Atlantic South, playing Pikachu and Luigi respectively. Both players even stayed strong against tough matchups with ESAM taking out DSF, and BigLou beating Atomsk. Expected high placers like Neo placed lower than expected, in exchange for players like Chaz placing higher than expected.
It certainly was a wild trip, and all ended with Mew2King taking the top spot. Mew2King says he was lucky to dodge ADHD in bracket, and bested Ally in the grand finals, a set that could have gone either way. Mew2King's exceptional showcase is likely attributed to the fact that he has been practicing every day for hours in preparation for this event - and it certainly showed. Following the singles tournament on Friday and Saturday was doubles on Sunday, which was an easy win for Mew2King and Ally, with no teams able to touch them. The next MLG event stops in Columbus Ohio and is scheduled for early June.

- Phase 8 - 05.01.10 - Texas
UTDZac is hosting another Phase event, this time with some extra additions. Phase 8 will not only be featuring both Brawl and Melee, but will also have a Brawl- side event, a rare treat indeed. Head on over to this tournament and take a stab at bringing down a pro player to win money from the bounty list! - Super DSO 2 - 05.08.10 - Pennsylvania
Hosted by the Director of Tournament Production himself, Super DSO 2 is the next entry in the Super DSO line of tournaments - events that are larger than my normal DSO events held at Drexel University. Super DSO 2 is garnering an exceptional amount of hype due to the full inclusion of both Brawl and Brawl+. There will be plenty of players attending the event from all over the Atlantic North, with a treat in seeing some primary Brawl players entering the Brawl+ event and some primary Brawl+ players entering the Brawl event. - Midwest Championships - 05.08.10 - Illinois
Plank continues to help with GPX (this is the second announced event between the two hosts but the first one happening chronologically) by hosting Smash at the Midwest Championships Event in Illinois. - Tourney Play 5 - 05.08.10 - California
The Game Clucks Guy has a special event planned for this May, the next installment of his Tourney Play events! Tourney Play 5 will take place in SoCal instead of his normal Washington state location. The event is shaping up to be one of the best Tourney Plays yet! - G.A.M.M.E. - 06.04.10 - Florida
GPX is a competitive gaming business that just formed an interesting deal with Pound TO Plank to bring Super Smash Bros. to their roster of games. Players are hyped for this event for an abundance of sponsors offering thousands of dollars to the winners of all events! - MLG Columbus 2010 - 06.04.10 - Ohio
MLG continues their triumphant return to Smash with the 2010 circuit! Columbus is expected to be one of the biggest MLG events for Smash due to it's prime location. In Ohio MLG is able to attract the entire Midwest scene (which is likely the largest region), and it is fairly close to Atlantic North, which is home to some of the strongest players in the nation. - The Showdown - 06.12.10 - Ohio
We've had national tournaments in Atlantic North, in the West Coast, and even in the Southwest! When will the Midwest get their chance at one? July 12th is the day my friends as Nope steps up to host The Showdown, Midwest's first national sized Brawl event! - /HOPE - 07.10.10 - Pennsylvania
It's a rare treat to see Pittsburgh hold a tournament these days, so hype is building for /HOPE (pronounced End Hope)! This will be the closest tournament for the midwest to get a taste of Atlantic North, so lets bring the two regions together head to head in this epic 2 day event. It's HOPELESS! - The Airship - 07.22.10 - North Carolina
M3D is ready to host his next event seemingly out of no where! Without anyone expecting such an event to be posted, comes what will surely be one of the largest tournaments this year. With plenty more to do besides smash including side Pokemon events, mafia game meet-ups, and much more, The Airship will be an exciting event to look forward to. The event is already confirmed to be sponsored by The Escapist and Monster Energy Drink. - Apex 2010 - 08.06.10 - New Jersey
[*]Cataclysm 5 - 10.09.10 - Connecticut
Legendary TOs The Mages are at it again with the fifth installment of their Cataclysm series! This is aiming to be a great event with plenty more to offer than smash - Brentalfloss is confirmed to make an appearance!
