It's kinda hard not to see gratuitous fanservice as kinda the 'norm' in Japan nowadays. Ya there's a ton of games that don't have it, but there's a ton that do too.

I'm in between.
I actually enjoy the games(they were on sale for about $5) but wish they toned down the fanservice. I was expecting garbage gameplay and stupid story, but the gameplay was solid (the music game has legit good gameplay) and it was surprisingly well written and voiced.

But, a lot of the fanservice was shoehorned in and in some cases was annoying. I can tolerate the battle damage, but the musou style game legit gives you the ability to strip yourself (by jiggling your characters boobs) for an attack bonus.....and it's essentially required if you want to beat certain challenges. Like....why?

The cooking game (the better of the to released vita games) had no legit reason for asploding clothes and a ridiculous reason for the....dessert fanservice (literal cheesecake). And the normal price is too high for the number of songs you get.

I can tolerate certain levels of fan service, but when I can't play a portable game on the go because of it, then you know there's too much.

As someone who looks over game sales pretty often. Otaku games in Japan don't sell hugely. For the most part, I see them opening with ~25k first week, usually less. They typically never reach 100k either. They're a sizable market, but they are pretty smallish and niche. Otaku games tends to be low budget and often have Special Editions that costs way more to help profit.

I don't know much about the anime industry though since I don't really follow that.

This. I do wonder if Smash Bros helped inspired NX's direction. Developing Smash Bros for both 3DS and Wii U sounded like a nightmare from the things we were told a while back.

That is such a bad idea in terms of costs. Handhelds are suppose to be cheap for accessibility. The price was one of the 3DS's problems. If the NX console is a hybrid with specs, then the handheld has to be far above Wii U power (assuming the console is a big leap over Wii U) and I don't think that's something doable anytime soon.
