it's kind of a cultural divide thing because the doujin thing is... not really something that exists or has an equivalent in the west, because of stricter copyright and stuff. it's also primarily reliant on physical distribution, which is obviously a lot easier in a smaller country like japan.
most of the "xenophobia!" stuff is essentially because of that touhou smash bros thing. it broke his specific rules on what you are and aren't allowed to do with the ip (in this case, crowdfunding), and the person/people making it knew it.
