Mewtwo most certainly wasn't brought back because he was even a veteran, much less for the fact he was from Melee. He's freaking Mewtwo.

But the fact is he is a Melee veteran. It really doesn't matter if he was added due to popularity or not, him being a veteran from Melee would nullify the need for a second such as Roy if that really were the primary bases on which the latter was added. Mewtwo's inclusion would be killing two birds with one stone, would it not?

To say Mewtwo doesn't count as a fan-favourite Melee veteran simply because his popularity was in excess of the others doesn't make any sense. If Sakurai were only looking to have included one character under those specifications he needn't have included Roy.

The truth of the matter is if he can include Roy after Mewtwo there's no logistical barrier stopping him from including Wolf after Lucas. There's your true veteran parity anyway, not in two veterans and one we just don't count for some reason.
