Suitable Genres of Music for me?

Hi. I wish to enjoy music and want to do so by exploring some of the genres of modern music. I have very little music experience and only have one or two unspecific genres of music on my Ipod touch (which I predominantly use for jailbroken apps (not illegal) and freebie apps). Yet I have observed how vigilant people are with their musical tastes and choices and rather than reaching a demographic and popularity based judgement, I would like to actually explore the different genres. Would you people care to describe the different genres of music by introducing them to me and recommending me.? The thing is I don't know what kind of music I actually like and that's why I want you to help me here. Please help me make my choice whilst I research using music videos on Youtube for reference :chuckle:.

Thanks :)

p.s. I will decline the following genres: heavy metal, metal (don't exclude rock), various sadistic music, classical, reggae, jazz, easy listening, anything that is not modern music, anything that no one would ever have to listen to on their Ipod

My personal favourite genre is progressive rock. It's (quoting ProgArchives) a form of rock music that evolved in the late 1960s and early 1970s as part of a mostly British attempt to elevate rock music to new levels of artistic credibility. Progressive rock bands pushed "rock's technical and compositional boundaries" by going beyond the standard rock or popular verse-chorus-based song structures. Additionally, the arrangements often incorporated elements drawn from classical, jazz, and world music. Instrumentals were common, while songs with lyrics were sometimes conceptual, abstract, or based in fantasy. Progressive rock bands sometimes used "concept albums that made unified statements, usually telling an epic story or tackling a grand overarching theme."

I know the 1970's aren't very recent, but most old progressive rock music is still worth it. You've probably heard of bands like Pink Floyd, who were a huge inspiration to a large amount of modern rock bands today. If you really want something "modern", look for neo-progressive rock bands like Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Mew, Pure Reason Revolution and the list goes on... If you find yourself liking the genre then feel free to PM me, though you can find hundreds of bands on ProgArchives.

It's not a very easy genre to listen to because of the lengthy songs, long instrumentals and complex structure, but it's definitely worth a try. It really changed my view of music and I hardly listen to anything else now :-)

A few songs for you to try:

Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQARjDwHNtQ&feature=related (skip to 0:37, there's an ad first)
Transatlantic - My New World: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYFurHQ-OJc&feature=related
Mew - Comforting Sounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JVUvC74D8w&feature=related
Pure Reason Revolution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waFPmIIFiw4

("classic" prog rock) Pink Floyd - Time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyL2vAUVOM0

lol actually I wasn't trying to imply that classical is something no one would have on their ipod. I meant I'll just never like to listen to classical music in my own time (except for when I want to wind down :-)) so don't take the statement the wrong way lol

you guyz are doing all of his work for him lol.
And I'm assuming that since you wont listen to metal, that you won't listen to hardcore, post hardcore, or any other genre related to that. And since I mostly listen to that I cannot give much input besides these.

Theyre mostly hopeless romantic songs. They can kind of get a bit depressing, some of their songs. But I personally don't mind "confronting" those emotions. infact music to me is about the emotions it conveys onto me.

my 2 cents.
