God. If there's one thing I hate in this world it's people who say things like "suicide isn't funny", or "don't say that" when somebody says something like "wow kill yourself" when somebody makes a stupid comment, or does something ********.

I'd say 75% of people in this world know someone close to them who have taken their own lives, and yes, it is sad. Yes, it is horrible to think about- but you're making it about you rather than your loved one when you interupt a harmless joke or phrase. Plain and simple, it turns into a competition of who has experienced worse if you make a comment like "suicide isn't funny", and that's **** selfish- that's not out of respect for the deceased. You have no right to tell me that something isn't funny or okay to talk about if you don't know what I've been through (not me personally, just putting it in perspective).

If people can't make jokes or mention terrible things in this world then there wouldn't be a lot of things left that are politically correct to say. You aren't special. Okay, you're grandpa shot himself in the head and that's terrible, and if somebody makes a comment knowing full well that this has just happened to you, than yeah, that's bad, still you shouldn't say anything, but the person who said it should feel bad. Or if your mother, father, brother, or sister killed themselves, your company should probably know you well enough not to say something stupid- But just because your grandpa killed himself 5 years ago doesn't mean you have the right to tell someone what's okay to say. For all you know, the person who just cracked that joke has lost 3 friends to suicide, and has moved on.

So please, just keep it to yourself next time. That goes for cancer, ****, mental illness, and abortion as well.

Well hey, in a cancerous place like that (no pun intended..), people can laugh at a joke at least.

But seriously, I know what you're saying, but I haven't seen many people make a big deal out of it in my lifetime. I can't stand people who repetitively use a joke like that though.

That's probably the only time it can be counted as offensive... or just ********. Take your pick.

I don't mean joking so much as phrases, like I said- such as saying "go kill yourself" while laughing at something stupid a friend has said or done.

Of course, it applies to actual jokes as well, but I agree that those typically just arent funny or are annoying.

Seriously when ever someone says "go kill yourself" online I really feel bad. It's an ugly thing to say. Even for ONLINE standards.
Why do you say that? I'll agree it's a MEAN thing to say if not in joking context, but no worse than cursing at someone.

And the sundancekid, I CAN appreciate the humor in depressing comic week, but that comic is... well, depressing. I dunno how you could really find humor in the actual comic, but if it's the idea of something sad (especially w cyanide and happiness) being funny than I can sort of appreciate that.

(am I a hypocrite now? )

EDIT: actually I don't blame you for thinking it's funny anymore. I read it through a couple more times and it doesn't make me laugh out loud but in a evil type of way I can sort of snicker at it.

It's a funny topic. Depending on the way it is presented, suicide can hit different emotions. I think because it was random and unexpected it made me laugh.

I pity people who can't find humor in something tragic.
Exactly. I was watching a movie ( I forget which) in English class freshman year and a man got his feet stuck in the railroad tracks. He starts screaming and, of course, you see a train comming. Almost everyone in the class gasps and I start laughing. A couple other peoplel started to laugh too, but I was the main one. A guy asked me how I could find that funny. I replied with something like "He got his feet stuck trying to retreive a HAT. How is that not funny?

Quote of the forever. Seriously, this sums up everything I was going to type up in here in paragraphs. Thanks man. Can I quote this outside of here, in case the discussion comes?

Suicide is a great band. The Suicide Machines are pretty good too, but not Suicide status.

That made me lol. That is funny yet sad at the same time. Of course its not going to be funny when your they guy stuck on the tracks. Then when you see a guy laughing at your death that when it hits you it isn't funny at all.

If I was the guy I would be thinking "This is probably hillarious to the guy watching me..."
or maybe even "This is an epic fail on my part. I'm about to die all because of a stupid hat. I CAN'T BELIVE I WANDERED ON THE RAILROAD TRACKS FOR A HAT."

Suicide can be a tad ... scarring. Have you ever walked in on someone trying to commit suicide? Battling with someone in such a ****ed up mental state, telling him to go throw up in the bathroom while I go call 911?

It's pretty messed up, dude. (lol ironic post towards first post... but it is true.)

Though I'm going to agree, people shouldn't make YOU feel bad for saying something. I personally don't say "go kill yourself", but who am I to tell someone else to not say something? Especially if they really just mean it in all good fun. In fact, I'm sure I say much worse things than that.

That's all I ask of people. I think it's a sign of maturity to be able to tolerate a joke about something painful to you without lashing out.

See, one of my friends who's grandfather killed himself a few months ago said to my friend "suicide's not funny" when we were talking about a different friend who had been trying to get this one girl who had obviously rejected him multiple times and how he would end up probably "killing himself" over her. At this point, he throws out the line to my friend, who had lost a grandma to suicide as well as two close friends from church, (whom he had in no way disrespected). It just REALLY pissed me off and I wanted to say something but didn't want to bring up his dead grandpa.

And then my gf says "don't say that" when my friend says "kill yourself" to me after horribly mispronounicing a word. That just made me cringe.

I mean, I'm sure if Xysven were/is comfortable saying something like "he'll probably end up killing himself lol" and somebody tells him that's not okay to talk about after his experience with a suicidal person, that would piss him off. Or maybe I'm crazy.

If you can't laugh at death and misfortune, then you don't have the right to whine about it either. You have to acknowledge that it happens daily, and that firstly you're not the only one that it's happened to, and secondly, these things, more often that not, have happened because they're funny.

I remember hearing this a while ago (can't confirm if that's true or not), but a woman died because she was in a contest that if she didn't go to the bathroom for a whole day (and you had to drink like three bottles of water in the morning), she would win one hundred bucks. Something happened, stuff got messy, and she died becuase of her not going to the bathroom.

How is that not funn?

It's all because of Catch-22 juxtaposing hilarious scenes with, outside of the fiction, serious unfunny moments.

I think if people are offended or upset if you tell a joke about suicide, thats perfectly fine. If they tell you "suicide isn't funny," just dont tell them that kind of joke / don't bring up suicide in that manner again. It's not like they're breaking your balls because of it, and it's a touchy subject, so the least you can do is just be flexible.

Some people may lack a sense of humor, or some people may have a very different sense of humor than yours, but common courtesy should bend far enough to allow for some acceptable leniency on both parts. So if someone gets offended, just apologize and don't do it again to them.

Some people get annoyed because they find it as trivializing something serious or that the jokes are not giving enough respect to the issue. Things are personal to people, if you think you're sense of humor should override their problems then you should go hang yourself

I find the only people who say "go kill yourself" are the type of people who the world would be better without.

I don't mind jokes that are actually funny, but the people who aren't saying that in a joking manner at all. They're just dicks.

actually, I think online is probably the worst place to say it. Sure it's no worse than cursing, if you know the person you're saying it to is of sound mental state. but on the internet it's a lot harder to judge that. for all you know (not you specifically) you could be saying it to someone who's had those thoughts and would take it seriously. I'm not saying that when someone says "kill yourself" or w/e that they're being serious, but people who actually consider suicide aren't usually thinking very logically, and it could influence them.

people do need to lighten up, but that shouldn't give you free reign to do whatever

Well, gee, that about sums it up. ._.

I have a very dark sense of humour myself, I assume it's a coping mechanisim I use. Yes, I've always found it annoying when people say "dude that subject isnt funny mon"

Yes it is. EVERYTHING can be made funny, God**** you. You need to look at things with a smile and a wink at times -- it shows you just how trivial things really are in life... a different view. Make something ugly look pretty.

Was it Rowan Atkinson who said it? I forget. But I know some comic once said "In comedy, nothing is sacred."

And that's **** true.

You're stupid. Go kill yourself!

Just kidding. I agree. I think the only language I don't like are derogatory things like the N word for black people.

I don't really get this topic.

Just because you think it's funny doesn't mean everyone else does. What you are asking people to do is basically the same as them telling you to shut up. Except you're just angry that they got offended.

Simple, IMO. Every person has a different and unique sense of humor. Some people have similar tastes in humor, others vastly different. I doubt there are two people in the world that have exact likes/dislikes. Some people are more easy going and laid back, while others more tense and uptight.

You should be selective about what you say and do, but don't need to censor yourself or anyone else. I think people should just be wary around people they're unsure about, as you don't know what can and will offend different people.

I don't mind people having their opinions. I welcome that. I just wish they would allow others to hold their opinions and not try to interfere with others equal rights to their opinion.

u have low self esteem if u let someone's insults/jokes like "go kill urself" offend you.
this is the internet, unless you're new to it, u should have gotten the hang of it by now.

I do. I REALLY do...

Darkslash's responce to "Go kill yourself" ( I also say that or I say "You can, Toucan!" lolinsidejoke) reminds me...

If someone (not seriously) say "I'll kill you" I just say
" NOT IF I KILL MYSELF FIRST!" ( not serious either)

It gets laughs out of people....

its not that "suicide isn't funny" is mean cuz people might know someone who had commit suicide. Its mean because you might be saying "kill yourself" to a person who has a low self-esteem and has already contemplated thoughts of suicide. You get a very very small amount of satisfaction out of something stupid, and you risk telling a suicidal person to kill themselves. Than you try and argue that theres nothing morally wrong with doing so.

And u might say that this seems unlikely or ridiculous, but imagine suffering depression, being lonely, feeling ostricized (sp?), thinking that you are worthless to the world, and than having people tell you things like "kill yourself". And its not gonna be one person, this is typically a popular phrase when picking on some "nerdy" kid. So its a constant thing.
