I've been thinking lately. I do Student Council at my school, and am on the exec board (I'm also a District Officer). I'm not really sure I want to continue doing it though, but it's the beginning of the school year, and if I quit, I **** EVERYBODY over.

I joined and did it because I wanted to help my school. That was all fine, but the exec board members (and of course district officers) are required to go to District events... these don't really do anything for any school. They're completely uneccesary, and I don't want to go. If you like them (most people do, I guess I'm just weird), that's cool, but they aren't what I signed up to do student council for.

Normally, I would quit at the drop of a hat. But there's one big problem here: The Student Activities Manager at my school is my Mom. Me quitting would piss her off, and make her upset with me for messing her up pretty bad this year (we're already short two officers... missing another would not help at all).

If we only did stuff for the school, that's cool. If the District Officers did more than decide on District-event related stuff, it would be cool! But we don't... I'm forced to go and do things that I just don't want to go and do.

tl;dr

Wanna quit, but I don't want my mom to be mad at me.

Wow. Balls to the wall and nose to the grindstone right?
Perhaps you can tell your mom that you feel a bit suffocated with all this.

Oh, dude this is simple.

"Mom, I know this is really important to you and the school. But this is seems like it'll be pretty tough and I just don't think I can handle these extra stressors."

Always say that you can't handle something because you need to focus on grades. It is the greatest thing ever. Unless she's a crazy ***** and you know that any time you try to do anything else she'll be like "BUT NOT STUDENT COUNCIL? OH NONONO. YOU HAVE GRADES TO LOOK OUT FOR. >:\"

So yeah. I don't know what you're mom's like. I CAN NOT CUSTOM BUILD BULL**** FOR YOU.

Just do what your mother wants otherwise you'll be mincemeat.

As a teenager, your number priority for maintaining a decent standard of living and social life is keeping your mother happy.

@Arbutus: Well, she won't fall for that, because she knows that I'm (at risk of sounding like a self-contained ***) incredibly smart. I slept through my classes last year and got a 4.0 average. She won't believe me.

@Teran: Exactly why I'm afraid of quitting.

Dear Skyler,

No. You did not get a 4.0 if you slept. Not that I doubt your intelligence, it's just that teachers won't give you a perfect grade since they generally factor in participation and if you're asleep...yeah.

Butthat'snotimportantbecauseitdoesn'tmeanyou'redumb.
So there's really only one thing to do.

Get cancer and get shot.

The only teacher that I had last year that gave a participation grade, graded participation by if you brought your supplies to class. I did, so I got full credit for it.

It was sweet.

I have to answer questions and be awake and all that nonsense. My only free grades are from art and photography. :v

Well, that's what you get for joining the student council.

Just kidding. (Sort of.)

But is there any way you could get a position on the council that deals only with school-related matters? If not, get a part time job and use that as your excuse.

You could also just explain to your mother, as nicely as possible, why you're quitting. Or ask her if there's something else you could do for the organization that would be more in your area of interest. At some point, you're going to have to be your own person. Might as well let her get used to it early, or else you'll be like some of my friends, whose parents still call them when they are out late to tell them to come home.

On the other hand, student council looks good on your transcript if you're looking to go to college. So that's something else to consider. Maybe just put up with it for a year and resign after that.
