Stay with Fox or switch to Sheik?

Hey, new here.

I've played Smash Bros ever since it came out, and have always been decently good at it for a casual gamer, but a friend of mine recently got me into more competitive smash, and so I've been trying my best to increase my skill.

I've always used Fox, and up until recently, he's been my definite best, even though I was never able to master any of his special techs (Wavedashing, infinite shining, others) and the friend that got me into it pretty much beat me every other time.

However, I decided to try and use another character today, and I really took a liking to Sheik. She required a lot less skill to operate and flew across the stage a lot more gracefully. I do think if I'd be able to learn Fox's more advanced techniques, I'd become really good, but at the current level I'm at, Sheik suits me more.

So, do you think I should try to stick with Fox and get help from you guys with techiniques and strategies and such, or use Sheik and get better at an easier, albeit less rewarding and slower pace?

Thanks for the help.

fox at a higher level of play has the ability to be more dominating than sheik. Sheik is a bit harder to use and win with once you play other people who have all the technical aspects of the game down and who are actually good... but for beginners she is easily the most broken character ever.

I recommend just using whoever, fox is a good choice because once you've mastered his technical abilities you can pretty much do the advanced techs with any character, so he opens some doors. I for instance just used to play falco, then I picked up fox... and then marth and sheik.... and I often pick up whoever in regular matches now. The better your overall tech skill increases the easier you'll find it to control any character, at this piont in my playing I prefer to mix it up depending on who I'm playing and what I want to counterpick.

Hey.. why not learn fox AND sheik simultaneously huh, huh? That way you can **** in 2 different departments later. On a similar note, you can't really go wrong with any of the high tiers: fox, falco, marth, sheik... even peach and falcon.

Just like you were saying, getting really good with Fox would open up doors. I figure become really good at one of the characters would make the process easier for the other and others to come. I'd really like to start playing a little more professionally, but I'm just not sure what route to take.

Realistically, you won't get "good" with Fox enough to **** everyone on the advanced level by the time Brawl comes out. Just go with Sheik and own people until Brawl comes out, because it won't matter come February who you played with in Melee.

I honestly don't think its a bad idea to learn both at the same time considering they are both fast characters and have similar wavedashes/short hops. Obviously their strategies are completely different but technically they have some similarities.

Also I disagree with that guy above me. Realistically being good with sheik its harder to "****" people at an advanced level (minus a select few players out there). Screw it you should just go play marth haha. Also just because Brawl comes out doesn't mean people won't still play melee. Its not like SSB64 where there was a very small tournament scene. Melee enjoys and has enjoyed a huge competitive scene, inclusion in MLG, Evo, and many large nationally run tournaments. I'd say at this point its been pretty immortalized as a competitive fighter, so just like games such as Marvel vs. Campcom, or Street Fighter II, people shoould still be playing it competitively after Brawl is released.

Believe me, I've experimented with everybody I can, and Sheik and Fox are my best by far, followed by Samus and Pikachu. I'm really pretty bad with Marth.

I hate when people say that.

Fox is in Brawl. I guarantee you an adept Fox user in Melee will still **** newbs in Brawl who use new characters. Don't stop learning Fox thinking its too late. Have you even seen the gameplay vids? Have you seen his dtilt? dsmash? shine? usmash/uair?

Its all there, its been done. Fox will be the same, probably just with few slight adjustments. If you were good with Fox in melee, you will be good with Fox in brawl; plain and simple.

they are probably somewhere on the website. The fact is though that skills in this game will probably transfer over. Knowing how to l cancell well for instance will definitely be a major part of the next game. Also improving your spacing, ability to think and play smart etc. etc. will make you a better smasher in whatever version you happen to pick up. Why does everyone also think that melee will completely die out? Usually competitive and deep fighters maintain a certain amount of longevity, yes when brawl first launches everyone will drop melee but like the games I mentioned before I'm sure melee will still be going strong for a while.

you haven't seen the GAMEPLAY vids? God..you guys will freak.

Watch what Fox does to Bowser at the beginning of this match. The shine he does is faster than the JCed shines in melee, or almost at least. It looks like the shine is sped up ALOT.

Fox is 1st player and will spawn on the top-most platform. The camera is a bit far, so you're going to have to lean close to see his moves.

EDIT: Its two matches in one, I forgot. In the second you see what I believe is the first captured play of Ike. It is also the first time Peach's Final Smash is shown. The FS is at the end of the match.

Sorry for going off topic.
