In the past few years, competitive Super Smash Bros. both in and out of the United States has seen major growth. Viewership, tournament attendance and regional growth have skyrocketed thanks to a number of factors, such Samox’s documentary and the amount of work put in by community figures. In fact, countries such as the Philippines, Korea and in this case, Singapore, have only started scenes relatively recently.

Singapore, of which you can read the whole story here, is a small country, having only 278 sq. miles of land area. Some may think that the country’s size limits its potential to grow, what may have seemed like a disadvantage when the scene started turned out to be a blessing in disguise. In fact, this very factor played a key role in forming the community due to an advantage it brought: convenience. The compactness and superb public transport system that the country has allows its citizens to travel around the city-state easily. This made hosting fests/tournaments more accessible. With this dynamic in mind, a blooming community, SmashG, grew and continues to do so up to this day.

All that growth will culminate this weekend. On October 22 - 23, Singapore’s Smash Wii U titans will gather to define its power rank and with it, storylines for months to come. Here's everything you need to know about State of the Fall, the country’s latest major.

Singapore's Titans

Unlike many who picked Sheik up because of her placing on the tier list, Jaryl Chan (:4sheik:) was not even aware of her potential at the beginning. “I came across this Sheik player on For Glory," he said. "He was using Bouncing fish and I thought that was a really cool move so I picked her up and stuck with her ever since.”

Jaryl has a very smart and intimidating playstyle. He highlights Sheik's strongpoints in matches by spacing his moves perfectly while asserting pressure into his opponents by covering many options at once. His ability to be creative in sticky situations combined with unrealistic reads which will leave you stunned and is what established him as one of the top players in Singapore.

Skyler” Guo (:4pit:) used to main Bowser and as a result, he has adopted a heavy-like playstyle for all his current characters. Primary relying on baits to sniff out openings and having a solid punish game, his game plan leans towards the reactionary. He is also learning a more aggressive playstyle in order get the option of mixing up between styles.

With his recent 2nd placing at SD City II, SmashG's Monthly tournament series, Nicol "Poiramee" Chen (:4robinm:) continues to impress people with his unorthodox play style. A confident strategist, Poiramee does not hesitate to go for for carefully calculated options which otherwise would be seen as risky, Making full use of Robin's arsenal, he uses move that people often forget, such as Nosferatu, to checkmate his opponents to victory.

Nicholas “Nicholades” Koh (:4dk:) is known for his accurate ding dong combos that secure stocks and his ability to turn the tables in many match-ups. Being aware that his playstyle revolves around a grab, he tries to improve his neutral game by learning other characters, which has resulted in having a wide character pool that includes Mewtwo and Mario. Nicholades will surely become a much bigger threat in the future, as he has never placed lower than top 8 at a SmashG event.

The Hidden Boss
In Early 2015, Sriks “Jinban” Jha (:4shulk:) from Australia came down to Singapore for studies. Initially an unknown at the time of his arrival, he soon got along with the community and with their help, improved rose up the ranks. After getting 5th place at Gamestart 2015, one of SmashG's majors, he went back to Australia during term break, managing to score himself the number 5 spot on his state’s local power rank.

Jinban is a technical player who makes use of his fundamentals to condition his opponent to roll and shield more. He is known for reading ledge get up options with up-smash and deadly Monado purges A player worth watching out for, he's the hidden threat going into State of the Fall.
