In regards to the halo debate, I'm in the camp that its a perspective issue. I'm imagining her frontal in comparison to this side shot. Her rings would cover the radius of her head and the three strokes would extend to shoulder length. The right side of her body is drawn out, obscuring the left streaks due to her head and left side drawn back.

Seems to be nothing but a lighting effect. Besides, it's not that strong of a fade. Look at the tone contrast on other parts of both Mario and Palutena.

It's simple! I don't know if you've noticed this, but 3ds outlines are partially translucent. The light would be behind her, thus it would show through the outline.

A. This is the 3DS version, we don't know if characters look up at each other
B. Mario's adjusting his hat in that picture, which, in every game he's done that in thus far, he's looked up.
