Sony has acquired Bungie

sonybungie.jpeg

If Microsoft acquiring Activison Blizzard last week wasn't crazy enough, Sony announced that they are buying Bungie for $3.6 Billion. Both the PlayStation and Bungie announcements confirmed that Bungie will retain full creative control over the Destiny franchise, and that Destiny 2 will remain multiplatform.

Bungie is primarily known for their work on the Halo franchise (Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and Halo: Reach) and the Destiny franchise (Destiny 1 and Destiny 2). GamesIndustry.biz reports that Bungie will be working on a new IP while expanding the Destiny franchise.

Author's Note: The first month of 2022 and we already have two big game company buyouts? I don't even know what's next. What do you think will be? Let us know in the comments.

I'm assuming that these deals had been in the works for months if not years, but the timing seems really weird to me - it makes it seem like Sony was being really, really petty about Microsoft buying out Activision haha. (considering that Microsoft bought the company that owns Crash Bandicoot, while Sony bought the company that originally developed Halo)

Also, I initially read the article preview as "Bungie has now joined the PlayStation Family for $3.68", and I was very confused.

I gave my heart and soul (and wallet) to Destiny but eventually got left behind with a dead game as I couldn’t upgrade.

Still, some fun memories of pulling my team during Strikes and Crucibles.

Sony acquiring Bungie doesn’t surprise me in the slightest. Despite forging the Halo franchise, it was apparent with Destiny was rolling out content with PlayStation players get first dibs that Sony was bankrolling a lot of it. Now, people can’t say “Bungie is favoring Sony.”
