sometimes when i use up-b from below the stage sonic will go about 3/4 of the way above the edge but wont grab on. has this happened to anyone else??

Not sure what the main point is, but here is some random edge-related ... information:
1) Sonic's up-B DOESN'T auto-grab the ledge on the way up.
2) If you mean that he was at the edge but didn't grab on, if you're holding down (and I think away, too) on the control stick, with any character, you'll go through the edge.

no he does a flip thing and just falls.
That's the normal animation for your up-B's fall. It sounds like you did the second one then:
You did up-B, going high up into the air, and tried to grab the ledge on your way down, but you were inadvertently holding down on the control stick (probably trying to fast fall), so you fell through the edge instead of grabbing it.
If that's not it, please explain.
