Earth...:/
I saw this on another forum, and figured I'd give it a go here. What about each generation did you love, and what just grinded your beans?

Gen I
Liked: The start of a great games series, fun, simple, replayable, MissingNo. lol These games were great, and all around fun. I still bust out blue or yellow every now and then.

Disliked: Not much to do after catching Mewtwo... :/

Gen II
Liked: Pretty much everything. 2 regions, continuing story, TONS of new features, Full color, awesome music, and I always thought Johto was the coolest region. Loved the pokemon, my favorite gen as of yet.

Disliked: My only critique is that the Elite 4 seemed somewhat simple. Also, to me, Time Travel seemed a little Farfetched... heh heh... farfetched...

Gen III
Liked: With the other generations, I could go on and on, picking things out of the blue... But seriosuly... I can only think of eight things TOTAL I liked about the entire 3rd generation, 3 of which aren't even related to RSE. 1) I thought it was cool to have your dad as a gym leader 2) I loved dive. The seafloor was like another world. I wish it had been expanded, and carried over to DPP. 3) Secret bases 4) Seviper/Zangoose and their rivalry 5) Pokemon forms introduced (Castform) 6) The Pokemon Colosseum games... because they provided something RSE lacked... decent Pokemon. ;/ 7) FR/LG... I liked the Sevii Islands. 8) Pokemon Box made trading efficiant and quick. The rest of this generation... yeah, not so much.

Disliked: Yeah... I pretty much like to pretend Hoenn never happened. It always frustrated me because it seemed so detached from the rest of the series, offered subpar pokemon, and the graphics and music were terrible. The villians were just... weird and pointless. "Lets drown everyone! No, let's fry everyone! Yay, what we're doing is a good thing!" Apparently, Hoenn unlike Johto and Kanto, always faces the sun and has no night cycle. :/ I didn't like the contests, and the Battle Frontier was far too time consuming and difficult given that you only got a berry for collecting all the symbols. ;/ And Feebas needs to just go away. >=/ What ticked me off the most was that they only had 202 pokemon, 135 of which were their own. What happened to the rest? WHO KNOWS??? At least Emerald fixed the Pokedex, but the others still couldn't be caught in the game. URRGH! Worst. Region. Ever.

Gen IV:
Liked: DPP tried to fix what RSE ruined. Day and night return, many more Pokemon available, 3-d (zomg!), decent storyline, contests are better. Also, LOVED the underground.

Disliked: *sigh* Still has that detached feeling. Many new Pokemon were unneccesary... I know many people online, myself included, still wonder why Chingling exists... -_- I personally never understood Tangrowth... it's a bigger Tangela. Many newer evolutions and babies were unneeded. I only own Pearl, so I never got to play the new battle frontier, but I was disappointed to hear, as I'm sure many Platnium players were, that the EXACT SAME battle frontier will be in HGSS... how can two identical ones exist? That seems very uninspired. But, I guess we'll see.

So yeah... that pretty much sums it up... thoughts?

Red / Blue / Yellow Series
Like: The start of an epic franchise, so not much more should be said.
Dislike: The spriting and endgame was rather poor. Like, there was nothing to do after Mewtwo.

Gold / Silver / Crystal Series

Like: Vast new Pokemon, better spriting, ability to travel to the Kanto region, the introduction of Berries and breeding, not to mention amazing music and the introduction of 2 of my top favorite Pokemon: Typhlosion and Teddiursa. I also liked the unique thing about having your mom save your money.
Dislike: The radio was a bit lame in my opinion, but other than that everything was gold. Pun intended.

Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald Series
Like: Some of the Pokemon were very cool: Blaziken, Aggron, and Kyogre to name a few. I also loved the secret bases you could have.
Dislike: The majority of the 3rd Gen. Pokemon weren't very good. Currently most of these reside in the UU or NU Tiers. Also, spriting was rather blah and music was mediocre. The plot (bar Norman and the Devon incidents) were also pretty unexciting.

Diamond / Pearl / Platinnum Series
Like: Graphics and spriting were quite impressive for this generation. The return of time having an effect in-game from the 2nd Gen. was a plus. The plot with Team Galactic was rather interesting to say the least. I have not played through Platinum but rest assured the Torn World was a fun and new way of viewing Pokemon. Also, the physical and special change was interesting and made sense.
Dislike: However, music was once again mediocre, and I ofren found myself just staring at some of these new Pokemon. Togekiss, Electivire, Probopass, Lopunny, etc. The Underground was a big disappointment, when compared to the 3rd Gen. secret bases. The Elite 4 were rather strong in Diamond, but were nerfed in Platinum if I recall correctly.

By far, Johto was my favorite region, with Kanto not that far behind. Sinnoh comes in 3rd with Hoenn piling in last.

Kanto: 9/10
Johto: 9.9/10
Hoenn: 5.5/10
Sinnoh: 7.5/10

Hmm, well ok then here comes a plethora of text. Also note I don't care much for the competitive scene of Pokemon, so don't judge me based on that stuff.

1st Generation:
Liked: Had some very great music, the best character designs of all the generations, and very decent Pokemon designs (though some were... out there).

Disliked: Flawless game to me, considering its time. There were some things in the gameplay that could have been changed.. but overall I have no complaints.

The region was decent.. and overall this generation was great. Not the best though.. and I would say it's the worse but.. I'll get to that later.

2nd Generation:
Liked: The music was amazing, especially considering it brought back and (imo) remixed most of the songs to perfection. It had 2 regions, amazing. Ok Pokemon designs.. and a pretty good region.

Disliked: Just not enough Pokemon designs that I liked really. Although I do like a lot of them.. it was basically like it or hate when it came to this generation. No in between. Character designs could have also been worked on.. I didn't like Gold that much.. and neither did I like too many of the gym leaders and what-not.

Overall this generation is just amazing in the end. Loved it. Just loved it.

3rd Generation: (oh boy watch out for this)
Liked: .. k, going against popular opinion here but this generation had my favorite Pokemon designs of all the generations. I can name lots that I would not mind being on my team, in fact. The music was the best of all the generations -- when entering that non-bleepy age, they chose some of the best instruments they could have. I love the main character designs.. but I'll get more into that in the disliked. The region was very great, and I liked the addition of a safari this time around. Also, the Battle Frontier was amazing. It kept me going for a hella long time after the Elite Four.

Disliked: Well.. some of the character designs could have been better I guess. Some just seemed lazy really. A few things like text and Pokemon animations should have been like Emerald from the get-go IMO, but nothing can be perfect I guess. The legendaries could have also been improved upon (or at least some of them..) but that's pretty much it for me. Also.. the region could have been you know... not all water yah know? Well I guess it's made up for through diving. <3 finding Coeleanths.

Overall probably my favorite generation. I need to find Emerald again (was stolen). Probably gonna get that and save up on importing HG/SS really. It's that good to me.

4th Generation:
Liked: The Pokemon designs were great, and the region was beautiful (needed a bit more variety than just a snow area and a bit of rain though). It has Piplup. I get why a lot of people like it really.. but..

Dislike: Well... I don't know what I dislike it. Maybe it's cause I'm basically trapped in the same area for long periods of time most of the time. There's pretty much no variety in the region to keep me interested long enough. I can't stand not being able to go to a new are for 2 hours though.. especially considering how slow battling is here.

Overall.. well.. I don't know. I can see why people love this game really. It's great.. but it's just not "me", which is weird when I say I'm a big Pokemon fan. I guess you can't be pleased all the time.. and here I just got to the point where I was basically forcing myself through the game so I could enjoy the end game which is actually VERY fun to be honest. Probably never will finish Platinum unless I gameshark my way through it or something. Oooooh well.

Umm, rating system thingy I guess:

RBY - 8.2
GSC - 9.7
RSE - 9.8
DPP - Can't judge it when I've only played through Diamond right? Oh well, if I ever make it end game in Platinum, I will come back to put a number here. Most likely never.

I'm surprised a thread like this hasn't already been made. Unfortunately it just asks for walls of text.

Gen I
Likes: Great start to a fantastic (at times) series.

Dislikes: Not much to do after catching Mewtwo. Thankfully this wasn't the case in the remakes.

Gen II
Unfortunately I missed this generation the first time around.

Gen III
Likes: The secret bases were a great addition. The double battles were a welcome change of pace and an unique challenge.

Dislikes: Though this is probably my least favorite region, i only really disliked the extra lengths one had to go to to get some of the legendaries (mostly Rayquaza and the Regis) and, in the beginning, the contests. Though I've never been a big fan of the contests, I prefer the extra challenge of this version where one could lose points. I was also disappointed that there was little, if any, connection to the previous regions storywise.

Gen IV
Likes: This gen is probably my favorite because of its diversity. The ability to use your pokemon from the advance versions was great. The online trading and battling was also a widely welcome addition.

Dislikes: In my opinion, there is very little to dislike in this generation. The underground was okay, but I prefered the secret bases in third gen. Again I was disappointed by the lack of connection to the other regions storywise.

Ratings:
Gen I: 9.25
Gen II: I missed this so I can't give one.
Gen III: 8.75
Gen IV: 9.5

1st Gen
Like: As everyone else put, it was the start of an amazing series. Unlike most, however, I actually kind of liked the fact that it was basically over after Mewtwo. It gave a certain satisfaction to finishing the game that the later installments tended not to give. I also enjoyed the sprites in this game more than I did in later installments, as they looked more animalistic in these games. Oh, and Yellow was fantastical. :3

Dislike: Lots of hax issues, such as the mechanics of moves like wrap and the effects of freezing. Although not big to most people, this was a major issue to me. I also disliked Missingno. Hacking discourages me from playing and finishing the game, yet it was too convenient to not do. D:

2nd Gen
Like: Oh goodness, where to start...I basically enjoyed everything about this game. The special stat split, the ability to register an item to the select button, 16 badges with two regions, the inclusion of two new types (DARK <3), night/day and full utilization of day-by-day functions, the 'perfect' number of Pokemon with 251, Umbreon (<3), and breeding. Plus, it was the only one of the generations to keep me playing and playing without the use of such things as the Battle Frontier, and they fixed the issues I had with 1st gen. The music was wonderful as well, and it has my second favorite environment of all the gens.

Dislike: I guess if I had to say anything, it would be the lack of the Safari Zone (although it did have the bug contests...but those weren't as good). I also didn't like the fact that Crystal was only available for the GBC. I had a GBP. :( Oh, and I still think that Pinsir needed an evolution.

3rd Gen
Like: Introduced abilities, and had my favorite environment. This gen also allowed for mono-dark runthroughs, which is definitely a plus to me. :D Diving was also an awesome inclusion, and Team Aqua was probably my favorite evil syndicate (pirates intrigue me). This game also had secret bases, which I absolutely loved to customize. This gen also introduced the Battle Frontier.

Dislike: This is when they started to get too many Pokemon. I liked that the ones they included were original, but it was still the start of too many. I also hated all the water travel. I was never a big fan of surfing around in any of the Pokemon games to begin with, and this one just had too much of it. Diving was cool, but constant surfing was not. This game had also lost the time aspect that was enjoyable in 2nd Gen, and that was a big thing to me for them to basically leave it out.

4th Gen
Like: The physical-special split, and the major advances to the competitive metagame that came because of it. The underground was pretty cool as well. I liked all the mining. This game also reintroduced the night and day function, as well as the day-to-day functions to an extent.

Dislike: The entirety of the region was pretty blah to me, and there were now waayyy too many Pokemon; most of which I found to be highly unneeded. There was also very little connection to Gen 3, which this is supposedly a 'sequel' to. That bothered me a lot. I also felt that, at least in the case of Platinum, the story was only mediocre yet was shoved in my face constantly. This dismayed me from wanting to ever start over, as I knew I'd have to deal with the story all over again.

Overall ratings:
1st Gen: 8.1
2nd Gen: 9.7
3rd Gen: 8.4
4th Gen: 6.2

I like my random end-numbers. :3

Some have said that Gen III didn't have time of day, which isn't entirely true. You had to set the clock at the start of the game, but there was no easy differentiation between night and day. I know this because I have raised both an Espeon and an Umbreon in Ruby. I know about the clock because I recently restarted to get new versions of the legendaries.

Oh, I know there's a clock and such. It just really didn't play much of a part in the game, which is what I had always loved about 2nd Gen.

Gen 1:

Likes: It was the game that started it all. It had some cool Pokemon designs, some great music (the Champion theme in the FR/LG games is probably my favourite video game music), and not to mention an awesome rival (Blue).

Dislikes: Like everybody said...not much to do after the game. Can't say i like some Pokemon from this series (Zubat, Drowsee and more..)

2nd Gen:

Likes: It's my favourite gen, so i have some major biased in this one. Many of my favourite Pokemon are in this gen (Umbreon, Typhlosion and more), awesome music, another awesome rival (Silver), and not to mention it was fun as heck to travel to Kanto in the game.

Dislikes: My only complaint is that it had the most underweilming new Pokemon...but aside from that, i love this gen.

3rd Gen:

Likes: Gotta say, i love this gen too. Another amount of my favourite Pokemon are here (Swampert, Manectric, Flygon and more), travelling through the region was fun, and the Battle Frontier gave some decent challenges.

Dislikes: First of all, i didn't like how you couldn't trade between the old 1st and 2nd gen games (I mean, i understand why it couldn't happen, i just didn't like that.) There ARE some lame Pokemon in there, and the rival was, "Hey! I'm your best friend! Let's battle!"

4th Gen:

Likes: Uhh...I liked some of the Pokemon in the game. This was the gen that got me into competetive Pokemon, with easy EV training.

Dislikes: This was probably my least favourite gen. It had some music that were, meh, in my opinion, some crappy Pokemon designs, and i freaking hate the rival in this game.

Ratings?
1st: 8.8
2nd: 9.9
3rd: 9.5
4th: 6.6

Obviously, everything is in my opinion, so don't flame me or anything. xD
