Something like this exists for jump superstars, which is basically the closest thing out there to smash bros. It's quite likely something like this will be added to the final version of brawl.

This was in Pokemon battle revolution. But in that game, did anyone ever add random people? I know I never did. This would be a nice addition if voice chat was implemented.

That feature was in MPH and it STUNK! You added people as your vial and you could play with them if they ever were online...but in the same lobby as you...If you can add them as your friend and communicate, it could be a total stranger and might abduct you, so Nintendo won't do it !

The reason Nintendo implemented it this way to begin with is so that you won't be able to meet anyone through the game. If they were going to allow this they would just remove the restrictions entirely.

With Anyone? No. With Friends? Yes. Here's how:

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, you get to play in your friend's town, and they may bring one of THEIR friends that you don't know. In that situation, you'll be able to register each other as friends without having to exchange friend codes. I added a bunch of people that way, and it was fun.

If SSBB were to work the same way, it would rock.

Its really sad that it probably wont be possible, even though you could do that on Metroid Prime Hunters, and that wasn't even an amazing online experience. (mainly too unbalanced and easy to win with cheap tricks)
