The first piece presents a nice parallel, contrasting both the red and grey birds, and the snowy-blue and [blood]-red backgrounds, each of course, corresponding to the different birds. The environment - in conjunction with the colors of the birds - which they are presented in, personifies each bird without relying on any type of motion or expression.
Snow no longer falls, as all is resting in this time of tranquility, yet something personal is occurring between the birds. They face opposite directions, and even in this frozen time, they would not rely on one another. Something has torn the birds from one another; something perhaps, has been torn from yourself, and you refuse to look back, as you may see a world that you've experienced and wish not to revisit.
However, the birds do share the same tree, so perhaps all that has been said is wrong, as the tree is presumably their home - and sharing home brings hospitality between the two.
I'll happily speak more of the piece with you.
