This thread was created to outline the history of the video game industries most infamous soldier, and to spread awareness of Snake's awesomeness.

METAL GEAR

In 1995, 200km north of Galzburg, South Africa, lies Outer Heaven, a fortified state founded by a legendary mercenary in the late 1980s. Word had gotten out to the western world that deep within the Outer Heaven stronghold, a weapon of mass destruction was being constructed. Government officials order the high-tech Special Forces unit FOXHOUND to infiltrate the fortress, assess the situation and neutralize the threat. In a mission known as "Operation: Intrude N313," FOXHOUND operative Gray Fox infiltrated the Outer Heaven stronghold. Days later, contact with Gray Fox is lost and his last transmission simply reads "METAL GEAR..."

Operative Solid Snake, FOXHOUND's newest recruit, is ordered by leader Big Boss to rescue Gray Fox and carry out his mission.

Upon insertion into Outer Heaven, Snake makes contact with local resistance members Kyle Schneider, Diane, and Jennifer. Using all of his skills and the equipment he procured on site, he manages to rescue Fox. He learns from Fox that Metal Gear is the codename of a nuclear warhead-equipped bipedal walking tank, which can engage and dominate in all forms of combat as well as launch its nuclear warheads from any location. Outer Heaven plans to use Metal Gear to impose itself as the new world superpower.

In order to destroy Metal Gear, and topple the Outer Heaven mercenaries, Snake rescues the lead engineer of Metal Gear, Dr. Drago Petrovich Madnar, and his daughter, Elen. Armed with information on how to destroy Metal Gear, his skill and indomitable spirit, Snake fights through the entire Outer Heaven force. He begins to notice that traps being set for him are too precise, and wonders how information on his activities is being tracked. Moreover, Schneider is wounded by hostiles and is presumed dead after losing contact with Snake.

Upon destroying the powerful Outer Heaven defense system, Snake is able to neutralize Metal Gear. As he makes his way out of the compound's basement, he is confronted by the mysterious mercenary leader of the Outer Heaven forces, who turns out to be Big Boss himself.

Big Boss has been using his connections in the U.S. government to establish his own mercenary force, corrupt and steal military intelligence, and fund his activities. It was his aim to have Outer Heaven become the world's most powerful nation, with him at the top. He had the rookie Snake sent in, hoping to have him captured and feed the U.S. government misinformation, but had underestimated Snake's capabilities.

Having lost Metal Gear and much of his force, Big Boss starts the self-destruct sequence for the compound, and an underground battle ensues between Big Boss and Solid Snake. Despite injury, Snake defeats Big Boss and escapes the Outer Heaven compound as it crumbles in flames behind him. Big Boss stays behind and is presumed dead after the explosion.

METAL GEAR 2

By 1999, the Cold War had thawed, and nuclear disarmament by the major world powers promised a bright beginning to the 21st century. Despite this, all was not well in the world. A series of shocks to the oil market spurred the development of new high-tech energy sources, including fusion power. However, most vehicles still relied on oil for power.

Oil reserves were at a critical low, and the world community was prepared to take drastic measures, either by drilling into sand and shale for more oil, despite the difficulty -- or moving on to renewable fuels.

Such steps proved unnecessary when a Czech scientist, Dr. Kio Marv, successfully bio-engineered a new species of algae, OILIX, that could produce petroleum-grade hydrocarbons with little expense and effort. Marv presented the algae to the World Energy Conference in Prague, and was on his way to a demonstration in the United States when he was kidnapped by soldiers from Zanzibar Land. NATO discovers that Zanzibar Land's leaders plan to hold the world hostage by controlling the supply of oil, and some good old-fashioned nuclear brinksmanship, courtesy of a stockpile of nukes.

Solid Snake is brought out of retirement by FOXHOUND's new commander, Roy Campbell, and is sent to Zanzibar Land to rescue Dr. Marv. On the course of his mission, Snake teams up with Holly White, a CIA operative posing as a journalist, and Natasha Markova, a former StB agent and Dr. Marv's bodyguard. He is also reunited with Dr. Petrovich Madnar, the Metal Gear inventor from Outer Heaven, who claims to had been captured once again to build another Metal Gear tank (called Metal Gear D) for Zanzibar Land. Snake learns from Dr. Petrovich, that Big Boss, Snake's former commander, was alive and well, leading Zanzibar Land's forces.

However, upon reaching the suspension bridge leading to the Detention Camp, Natasha is killed by a missile fired by Metal Gear and Dr. Petrovich is recaptured by the enemy. The new Metal Gear's pilot is revealed to be none other than Snake's former mercenary buddy Gray Fox. Determined to accomplish his mission, Snake fights against Zanzibar Land's elite mercenary force (which includes former Outer Heaven resistance leader Kyle Schneider, now a member of the Black Color ninjas) and manages to reach Dr. Marv's cell.

Unfortunately, Snake arrives too late, as he finds Dr. Marv's corpse, who was unable to survive the repeated torture sessions, along with Dr. Petrovich, who was unable to save him. Just before Snake could retrieve the OILIX formula left by Dr. Marv, Holly reveals via a radio message that Dr. Petrovich was not captured after all, but was in Zanzibar Land voluntarily overseeing the development of Metal Gear. After the truth comes out, Dr. Petrovich attacks Snake, but is not successful in killing him.

With OILIX formula in Snake's hands, Snake was confronted by Gray Fox and Metal Gear D once again. After successfully destroying Metal Gear, Snake found himself in a minefield. The two engaged in hand-to-hand combat against each other and Snake eventually emerged as the victor.

After defeating Fox, Snake was forced to do battle with Big Boss. With no weapons at his disposal, Snake was forced to improvise and make a homemade flamethrower consisting of a cigarette lighter and a can of hairspray. Taking Big Boss by surprise, Snake defeated him for the second and last time. Snake and Holly escaped and together, they delivered the OILIX formula to Campbell.

After the situation was defused, Snake disappeared into the Alaskan wilderness, not to be heard from for a long time.

METAL GEAR SOLID

In February of 2005, during a training mission on Shadow Moses, a nuclear weapons facility on a remote island off the coast of Alaska, the Next-Generation Special Forces unit rebels against the United States government, led by the covert black ops team FOXHOUND. Their target is the advanced weapon system "Metal Gear REX", a giant bipedal tank with a railgun capable of hitting targets anywhere in the world with a nuclear warhead. They have one demand: the body of the greatest soldier who ever lived, Big Boss. The Next-Generation Special Forces (colloquially known as the "Genome Soldiers", because of their advanced gene therapy) need the genes of Big Boss to rectify the genetic defects caused by their gene therapy, saving their lives and turning them into the ultimate soldiers. The government cannot let this happen. At the request of the Secretary of Defense, Colonel Roy Campbell, the former commander of FOXHOUND, summons Solid Snake out of retirement (reluctantly) and sends him to infiltrate Shadow Moses in one last solo covert operation. His objectives are to find out if Foxhound have nuclear strike capability, and to recover the hostages, ArmsTech President, Kenneth Baker and DARPA Chief, Donald Ande

Nice thread, Solid. *thumbs up*

Anyway, I honestly think that Kojima asked for Snake to be in Brawl just 'cause the concept of characters from different games fighting each other is an awesome idea. If I'm not mistaken, didn't he ask for Snake to be in Melee, too?

I don't think so, never heard about him asking for Snake to be in melee.

I suspect that Kojima asked him to be in Brawl, in order to market MGS4 some. PS3 sales are not extraordinary at the moment, and perhaps he just wanted to remind some people. Also, Kojima is very fond of the legend that he created, maybe he just wanted to him alongside other famous game icons. Whatever his reason, I'm **** glad he asked.

Yea cuz, he did, but Melee was too far in production for Snake to get in there.

Snake in Melee would've been cool, and in that case, an extra character for Brawl could've been Cyborg Ninja Raiden. xD

Do you guys think there will be any other Metal Gear characters in Brawl?

Amidst all of the other possible first party characters, I don't think thats very likely.

Its a tough call, so many good characters to choose from.

Ninja Raiden or Grey Fox would be the best choices in my opinion. A lot of good bosses, but some of them would be difficult to implement.

No description of MGS3? that's the only one I haven't played yet to! From what I heard it doesn't really follow the typical story arc though...

Kojima takes a lot of pride in his games and does all he can to make them incredible experiences. It's like playing a movie. I think he is good friends with Sakurai and obviously Sakurai is the same way with his games. Kojima probably became infatuated with the smash bros series as we know he tried to get Snake into melee, but it was too late. Plus getting something he created while working with the nintendo console to return to combat with the likes of Mario has to be one of the most rewarding feelings to come from game developing.

Except that Sakurai is very, very modest. Why do you think the only Kirby rep in the past two games was the pink ball himself? I don't know how he came to the decision to add Meta Knight, but it was one of the best decisions he ever made.

Also this thread is win. You know, MGS4 is the last game in the series, and I think Kojima wanted to keep Snake's legacy alive by including him in Smash Bros., among other things. I just love Kojima for begging to put Snake in Smash Bros. though. Not only do we have one of the most awesome video game characters in Smash now, the door has opened for other (hopefully) awesome characters like Sonic and maybe Simon and/or Mega Man. I bet if it was any person other than Sakurai they wouldn't have listened to a begging like this, even if it was their friend who was begging. All hail Kojima and Sakurai!

Yep, I too am glad Snake is in Brawl to keep his character alive, considering MGS4 how old he is. XP.

I hope IF another SSB game is in, the TPC get to return.

I did too, but I also wanted a taste of Armored Core 4.
There are plenty of nice games coming out for the PS3, just saying MGS4 is the main reason why I bought one.

Snake 4 Potential Main!!
Even if Snake is a relatively low tier, I plan on mastering him anyways.

In the past I just grabbed one of the best players, and shied away from the others.

No more with that though!

I don't think it'd be that much of a stretch for Kojima to ask Sakurai to include Raiden in Brawl without him counting as one of the three (?) 3rd party characters Sakurai mentioned would be in Brawl. I'd really love Raiden to be in Brawl but not as a Snake clone. Maybe give him a tranq, agile moves Snake wouldn't have (it looks as if Snake is very weapon based anyway), and maybe implement his sword game a bit but not too much to where he'd be considered a sword character like Link or Ike. I dunno, I think that'd be awesome. <3 Raiden.

I'd prefer Liquid, Gray Fox or...Vulcan Raven!! Any of them would totally rock, but they won't really make it...

I don't know what Liquid would have for special moves though...maybe his Final Smash can be REX? Or the helicopter? Idk.

It's hard to believe MGS 4 is the last game in the series since he said thatt before. Twice. Once for MGS 2 and once for MGS 3. It all depends on wether it truly awnsers all our questions about all the characters.
Anyway, this is a great way to keep Snake alive if MGS 4 is the last game in the series.

hell yeah, Liquid Snake for Brawl!!!! Liquid Snake could very well have his own moveset since he isn't weapon based like Snake is so he could work, and Metal Gear REX should very well be his final smash, after all it was him who used it in the original Metal Gear Solid game, but yeah the Hind-D also seems like an intersting Final Smash, he could shoots his missile barrage across the stage which would be awesome

There will be other Metal Gear games I'm sure, but Hideo Kojima will not direct the future games... And Solid Snake will die in MGS4, so they would have to use Raiden or a new character for any future games.

Two words: re-releases and spin-offs. That's what you can expect from MGS after MGS4 is released. I mean, the fact that Metal Gear RAY is in Brawl in the background will mean problems. They will either not make a trophy or remake MGS2 for WIi(very unlikely).

Naked Snake (Big Boss) from MGS 3 is way more badass than Solid Snake but Solid Snake is way more badass then anyone else not including Kratos or Dante. those 3 are BADASS!

Big Boss took out the whole Cobra Unit, and his mentor the Boss to earn himself the name BIG BOSS!

Snake took out the whole FOXHOUND team though.

Snake is gonna PWN Brawl
