I travel a lot and I've noticed an odd occurance where I travel in the US. It seems like no on can settle on a name for pop. I personally call it pop, but I am from the Midwest. Those in the North also call it pop, but the South prefers the term Soda. Its been a while since I've been to the West, so I didn't check the term used there. Has anyone else noticed this other than me?

Within the realms of this reality.
Well, this is an intresting topic...

Anyway, most I know call any soda a Coke, but, since I might somewhat be the one to complain about acutal names (I think I might be somewhat OCD), I'll call it by the name, or soda. I haven't heard many people call it pop.

Ahem. It's soda over here.

Just a warning in advance, this topic collects rather useless snippets of information, so unless people start being unusually substantive with their posts in here I have a feeling this topic won't be open for their posts in the near future.

Visiting from above.
Well, each state either has a majority of people that say either "soda" or "pop." I read a whole study about how in the 2000 election, the majority of the "soda" states went for Gore, while "pop" state went for Bush (or vice versa, I don't remember). There were only a few exceptions.

How's that for informative? :p

I just call it plain "pop" and I live in Indiana. My sister whom lives in Florida tends to call it Soda. So yes, the south does mostly prefer the term Soda.

In australia, we don't use "Soda" or "Pop"...
We just say the drink (ie Coke, Lemonade, etc.)
or just say softdrink.

Not too high, not too low, but juuuust right.
in general whenever ppl refer to a soft drink around here (i'm in northern texas) they call it a soda. i don't see why anyone would call it "pop". that's like a saying from the old days (I can't remember the decade) when there were still a lot of softdrink fountains everywhere and you couldn't go pick up a coke out of a vending machine. but i guess the phrase remained popular in other parts of the country.

I call it soda, or sometimes just by the names. I'm from california. I had a friend who moved here from Michigan, and he always called it pop. Maybe it's based off location?

We've always called it pop around here. Recently I decided that "pop" was too simple. I then concluded that a change of spelling was all it needed.

First I tried "popp" but that didn't look right. Senseless added bulk.

Then I tried "poop." To my dismay, further research concluded that this "poop" was an existing substance already. A substance tastier than I ever imagined possible...

I guess it stays "pop" for now.

these fields are optional but will enhance your on
I've always said pop. It's one syllable, and is therefore more streamlined and futuristic. Suck that, S.O.D.A! Or, as acronym haters might say, ****ty Oral Drinking Anti-goodness!

Actually, I don't support the pop versus soda rivalry. However, I hate anyone who calls all soft drinks Coke. That's ********. It's all like, "I'm too dumb to read the can or use my taste buds to figure out whether it's Coke or not, so I'll just assume it is."

Yeah. That's what that's like.

Alot i know in MS use the term "pop" Maybe because its were country and more proper ppl use soda.

But i can't imagine asking a friend "You wanna get a soda?" It might have to be something like "Let's go get a pop" See its shorter.:)

AHEM.

According to The American Heritage Dictionary:

soda n 2. Carbonated water or a soft drink containing it. 3. A refreshment made from carbonated water, ice cream, and usually a flavoring.

soda pop n. Informal. A soft drink; soda.

pop n. Informal. A nonalcholic, flavored, carbonated beverage; soda pop.

In other words, as defined by the dictionary, "soda" is the correct term to use when refering to carbonated soft drinks.

Ha-ha. Pop.

I Disagree...

FaTmAn2k20: Soda or Pop is based more on geographic location as stated throughout this entire post. KiKi even liinked to a site where you can see this is true.

However, on your other statement, I must disagree. Coke has, and will always, taste better than Pepsi.

Criss-Cross'll make ya jump! Jump!

Yeah, I say Pop ~ I lived in Erie, Pennsylvania until I was about 7.

Now, I'm in Huntsville, AL, where any and every soft drink is classified as a "coke". Seriously, in a restaurant, you say, "Can I get a Coke?"

"Sure sweetie, what kind?"

It really confused me when it first happened, because they hadn't come out with Vanilla Coke or anything...

"Uh, regular, I guess..."

"Regular what?"

"... Coke..."

In the UK so far as i know it's generally known as pop. We never call it soda. Unless it's cream soda.

I tend to call all the different things by their names, such as lemonade, orangeade, ginger beer, and so on.

You should call it "Cream Pop." Anyone who hears it will think you're a porn star or something.

"Oy, bring me back a Cream Pop."

And yeah, if it's a Sprite, I'll ask for a Sprite.

It doesn't matter what it is called, it probably ends up getting spiked in the end.

Seriously though, the only reason I would ever ask for a Cola or Soda would be something like a Weis brand drink called Cola. Otherwise, I call it by its real name.

On the other hand, my dad asks me to get him a soda, I randomly pick a Diet Coke or a Diet Sprite, or whatever he likes. It's definitely less confusing to just call a drink by its real name.
