Got to say I'm conflicted on Byleth even if I'm still hyped that 3H got acknowledged at all (At least I feel like Byleth "earned" their slot unlike Corrin with how acclaimed 3Hs turned out). I mean yeah I'm not super pissed about it, but at the same it goes back to what I said: 3H went out of its way to have non-swordie lords but yet they go for the avatar swordie. On the flip side, yes it does avoid route bias (even though Edelgard canonically has something over the other two that gives her more significance) but it feels like such a huge opportunity.

It also proves my theory sadly true about avatar privileges. Assuming the next FE is going to use an avatar yet again (highly likely considering Japan's love for them due to the waifu/husbando culture): They're pretty much a shoe-in over any interesting established characters.

Unrelated, but I honestly think that if we get another Square Character as DLC, it would be Lara Croft over Geno.

I don't think I have to explain why.

Gang ****. Lara's an icon of the industry. I'm also curious as to how an acrobatic gunner, who's relatively "normal" would be implemented. I feel that style of character can be tricky to pull off in an exciting way.

I concede. You make a good point. You think very differently about jokes when they're at your expense and not someone else's.

I still prefer DmC though. And I will not apologize for it, the reasons why, wanting a sequel, and wanting the costume in Smash. Because there's nothing wrong with having different opinions (Hopefully if I say it enough times it will change how I instinctively react).

We all need to be humbled and take things into perspective now and again, I have trouble with this too sometimes.

And not to dwell on it, but I don’t think DmC is a bad game, sure I don’t like how it handled the existing characters, but there’s a lot of stuff I do like about the gameplay and I’d take a few cues from it if I were to make a video game in the future, I do have some issues with the game outside it’s characters but I’d give it 7.5/10 overall.

I do want to kinda sorta point out something too. In terms of “patterns” and what not.

The things this fanbase comes up with are crazy...sometimes. Color theory, chair theory, etc, those were bunk.

Am I right 100% of the time? No, and I never said I would be.

But speculation is talking about, and trying to figure out answers to things. If you don’t want to speculate, that’s fine. But don’t expect other people to just around and twiddle their thumbs.

Even though Byleth isn’t 3rd party, I’m incredibly hyped. I love Three Houses, so to see them, the music, and the stage itself is super cool.

Looking forward to another...2 years or whatever for this ****, lmao. Hopefully folks stop pestering Sakurai on Twitter. Hilarious that he brought that up.

There's nothing wrong with speculation.

It's when people try to force it into theories and if you don't subscribe to said theory then you're clearly wrongthink that it gets nasty.


I'm not pointing fingers at anyone here, but outside this site, where theories start spreading to and become more mainstream? You get ridiculed to hell and back if you don't follow the leading think trend, which makes speculation just not fun.

You'd think with how often our 'theories' being nothing more than hair brained schemes or coincidences, we'd learn, but we never do.


Speculation should be free think, not forcing people to think one way, and while no one here does that, if you went to like Reddit or Twitter and said "I think it's a 1st party character!" before today, you'd be met with "LMAO yeah right it's all going to be 3rd parties", "Imagining thinking Sakurai would end on a 1st party when there's 4 other 3rd parties", "You just want anime swordsman trash", etc etc etc.


This kinda **** wouldn't happen if people didn't try to string together cause and effect from things that we didn't even know the full picture of, and instead just thought "Anything is possible, you're allowed to your opinion, I'm allowed to mine."

Hey. A lot of people want him, and Banjo proves that that's enough to not just get on Sakurai's radar, but Nintendo's. And I think every fighter this pass has taught at least one person to not buy ahead of time.

Watch this pass have the lowest pre-purchase rates of any Nintendo DLC.

I'm stilll gonna pre-order because I want the whole roster regardless of who it is and I want the discount. But if there's a character you would be really mad about, then don't pre-order.

Bruh. There's not many characters that would make me upset that I wouldn't just get the discount on the DLC. Besides, It took until Terry for me to even consider getting the pass despite my interest in Hero and Banjo-Kazooie as well. Nor do I regret my choice because Byleth is in. We knew an FE character happening at some point was finna happen. And I personally think, from a gameplay perspective, Byleth would the most interesting mechanically.

I won't even get upset if Geno was added. I just feel he's the most overhyped character out of most of these major requests. Though I know some Geno fans are chill people, so whenever I roast the character, it's mostly meant for ones who act like ****heads to fans of other characters, but ask for the puppet from a single spin-off more than 2 decades ago. The chill fans are good people, so I still kind of hope they get their character anyways.

Can't win them all. I'm sitting good cause we got the Legendary Hungry Wolf. The rest of the characters are fine in their own way I guess.

I do need to play more Banjo-Kazooie though. I need to get used to them, but I'd be lying if Terry didn't mesh with me immediately. Really the only weird thing with Terry is that is QCF doesn't do Power Wave, but Burn Knuckle. It messes with my brain considering what Terry's inputs usually are.

Finally home, so now I can share my thoughts on Byleth in Smash:

When Sakurai first mentioned how the fighter would be someone no one would really expect and you could tell who the new fighter would be just from the moment the trailer began, I was hopeful it would be Professor Layton because he would fit both criteria (especially if the trailer opened in an animated cutscene format just like the cutscenes from the Layton games). When the dusk-and-forest setting first revealed itself, I was still hopeful for Layton because it reminded me of a certain scene from the ending of Azran Legacy, the 6th Layton game. Only when Byleth showed up did I realize it wasn't Layton and it would be a Three Houses character.

I was initially thinking Sakurai was going to throw a curveball like he did in past trailers; for this one, I thought that maybe Sakurai would surprise us with Sothis based on how the trailer was developing, but then it turned out Byleth really was FP5. Said character also ended up deconfirming the other 3 lords with how he/she uses the other 3 lords' main weapons.

Though I would've preferred Dimitri because he is my favorite of the 3 Three Houses lords and is also shaping to be one of my favorite lords in the series, I don't mind Byleth's inclusion at all. In fact, I thought the idea of a whip sword would be neat in Smash, and having him/her use the weapons of the other 3 lords is cool and makes him/her unique. You could say Byleth fights with the entire weapon triangle (+ a bow) at his/her disposal now! A lot of Byleth's attacks look pretty fun too, especially the up special!

It now makes sense why Nintendo didn't want to reveal Byleth at the Game Awards: he/she isn't the kind of fighter that would generate hype for a wide-scale audience at a massive event like that. I think Byleth could've been saved for either the third or fourth fighter of the Fighter Pass; he/she being the final fighter of Fighter Pass isn't exactly the best way to conclude it when either Banjo or Terry would've suited it better.

Still, as an FE fan who is alright with Byleth's character, I'm looking forward to trying out Byleth for myself!

As for what the future brings, pretty shocking to think the second Fighter Pass will be running for 2 years with 6 fighters! it's going to be a wild ride! Hopefully Professor Layton will be among the FP2 fighters as the Level 5/Puzzle Game rep!
