Forty-four people entered Melee singles at WCC Saturday. So why were there only four set-ups for half of the day? Later in the afternoon someone set up another as a friendlies TV, but come on. That's one set up per 10 people, and that's with me bringing a setup.
Good tournaments become otherworldly when there are more than enough TVs for everyone to play everyone. We hosted NorCal and that's the best we could do?
I've been to countless of tournaments since I started playing competitively in the summer of 06 and I can count on my hand the number of times I didn't bring a setup. The benefits are there for everyone. If you're a noob, you want more TVs because it increases your shot of playing more often rather than sitting out waiting behind everyone better than you, just so you can play once, lose, and be at the end of the line again. If you're good, you get to play everyone more often. The tournament goes faster, so we can finish earlier and go out to dinner at a reasonable time. And we can devote entire setups to friendly play so money matches and teams friendlies can occur.
It's pretty obvious that SoCal melee is reviving, but everyone's still acting like 10-15 people go to tournaments and no one has to bring setups anymore because they know the hosts + P will. I know a lot of people carpool but please make it a priority to bring a TV or two with you. Even worse is when we have more TVs than GameCubes; come on guys, that's inexcusable. Bring a backpack and put your cube in it; if we need it, you have it, if not, it's not burdening you the entire time.
SoCal's going up to WCSL and I can guarantee you NorCal is going to do their best to make sure we have enough TVs for everyone to enjoy. But don't just depend on other people; if you have room in the car you're going with, bring a TV. The size doesn't matter. You'll know Melee is coming back once people stop being lazy and contribute more.
