I mean, last I heard, L-cancelling was still in, as well as crouch cancelling, and edge hogging, dashdancing etc, but they've removed all of this?

Honestly, my hopes for the games have drastically fallen. I understand it'll still be good, but I loved Melees competetive scene and I had great hopes for Brawl's online. I just want to know why Sakurai did this. It doesn't make a difference to noob players - they'll still get wasted by pros online just because pros are better - but this is sure to piss off long time Melee fans.

seriously!! im one of those pissed fans!! i completely agree with you. i mean sure im going to love this game anyways, but why renove all the techs??why? one of the reasons melee lasted sooo long was because of its incredible depth 6 years playing.. 6 YEARS!!! and I have yet to perfect some advanced techniques but if theyre arent any? then i will get bored sooner or later i just wonder why l canceling was removed i want a solid answer straight from sakurai

Online play would naturally be laggier than head to head on the same machine, and your advanced techniques will not work nearly as effectively.

On top of that, there is a thread that shows a nice video of Melee a year or so after it was released, the finals of a tournament and guess what... No advanced techniques :o

You may as well asked why they removed the techs from SSB64 to Melee.

Where is this video? I'd love to see what Melee was like before advanced techniques were discovered.

A resounding one then, compared to what you would see in recent Melee videos.

Even that does not prove anything though, considering it was a year after Melee's release and Brawl has only been in Japan for a couple of days now. If there are no new advanced techniques in a year or so then people will have room to bring up a lack of them, but two days after release...?

To sum it up, there was lots of rolling.

BTW, wave-dash out, L-cancel TBA, crouch cancel in, DI in, dash dance in, ledge hogging in. Simple fact of the matter is the only major scale tachniques that have been removed are L-cancelling and anything involving momentum gained by air dodging, just about everything else is still in, and as far as L-cancelling goes, there may be ways not yet discovered.

Shuffles without the L cancel.

Fox Trotting.

Pivoting.

Sorta-slow SHLs. (can't fast fall or influence direction while firing lasers)

You can still wall of pain with Jigglypuff if that counts.

You can still dashdance, but only very small.

DI is definitely in.

So far, I don't think Crouch Canceling is in. Let me test moar.

Thanks. a lot for providing info. I have 5 questions for you.

1. Could you further explain shuffle? There's so many conflicting reports regarding the status of lag-canceling. Is it totally out, same as melee, or automatic after FF as in the demo?

2. Does the inability to alter direction (such as start FFing) apply to other moves in addition to projectiles?

3. At E for all many people seemed floatier. Understanding Wall of Pain (WoP) to mean the ability to perform multiple aerials against a standing target without landing through using rising aerials, does the increased floatiness allow any other characters to WoP? (I'm thinking maybe Metaknight, Pit, Kirby with 2+ jumps an maybe some others with their just their second jump).

4. What is the status of double jump canceling for Ness (Lucas), Yoshi, and Peach?

5. There are some reports that jumping after running gives you a different trajectory. Is there any truth to this?

Thanks so much for your time.

I don't mind that the advance techs are out. We'll just build from the ground up again, feels like a Metroid game

Everyone knows pivoting is going to be the new wavedash. lol

But, seriously, I'm going to really focus on that for a while. I always felt it was kind of overshadowed in melee. I'll still miss wavedashing though.

BTW, I wish all these n00bs would stop posting before learning anything about the competative smash scene. That's kinda what these boards are for.

To clear one thing up, based on what I've heard, the momentum issue with running and jumping is that a lot of air attacks now have an effect on momentum, so if you run, jump, b-air, the b-air will slow you down and in order to progress forwards you have to DI forwards after attacking or else some attacks will almost stop you mid-flight... at least this is what I've heard.

Alright, doesn't sound so bad. Two more questions:

Anyone want to say anything more about crouch cancelling? Also, what do you mean by small dashdancing? Just not much room back and forth or something?

And next, how slow is the gameplay? I know it's slower as far as jumping and landing goes, but how fast is the average attack? Like, is the entire experience laggier and slower, or just the aerial bits? And how much do you think certain characters being able to attack after a 3x jump will affect gameplay (Game&Watch)?
