So, is shine just useless other than for reflection?

Never used Fox in Melee nor Brawl, and i only just started to really /play/ around Smash 4's release.

Upon watching tournaments, fox's shine was just great for basically everything. In Smash 4, i really can't use it for much anything but reflection.

I'm a new fox player, so i'm wondering if i'm missing something, but is that the case? Can it cancel into anything?

If you reflect something successfully then yes you can cancel shine into something else like a jump but otherwise you're stuck in the animation. As for other utility, before it could be used to spike, but in Smash 4 it can't spike, which I personally hate as a change

So yeah, reflector is kinda bad here for anything other than reflecting

Use the reflector to delay in the air. Fox's fast fall is so fast that it will be hard to react to once you decide to stop stalling. Dropping a nair or dair on them might be possible if you bait them to whiff an attack.

This game gives advantage to the player on the ground quite a bit. Landing can often be dangerous and punished heavily if anticipated well. Thus making reflector a great utility.

I've played 736 for glory 1v1 matches at this point.
427 KOs with Fox (All) and 402 (online) in the fighter records window.
This doesn't make me an authority, I think I have a ways to go still, but it might give you insight into the experience behind my advice.

It's good to throw someone off. If they're expecting you to hit them off a ledge with ftilt or jab, you can shine. It makes them shake their head in confusion.

Reflection and MAYBE slowing yourself down from getting launched off stage. Other than that...I think it's pretty useless for anything other than its main purpose. BUT, reflecting something while on the ground can provide a lot of opportunities considering you can jump, roll, sidestep and perform moves that can be jump canceled.

I still use the shine to stall when I'm in the air. I'll usually stall then follow up with an nair or dair. Other then that I just use the shine for reflecting projectiles. Miss shine spiking =/.

You can use it to turn around in the air.

I've used it to punish people who try to punish my roll from behind me. Nerfed as it is, its still a relatively quick option with invincibility before the hitbox. I find this use purely reactionary though, and I would by no means call it reliable.

Shine still has some use in smash4. It can be used to slow yourself down when being launched and turn around in the air.

I don't know if this is legitimate, but I've been experimenting with jab1 to jab2 to Shine. I prefer it over jab3 because it's harder to DI out of and it's still quick. It's a good , fast, gtfo option in close quarters.

@ Jackson Jackson the best follow-ups from jab 2 are probably grab and jab1. Either for a jab trap or gaining momentum. A shine would end the string and it doesn't have follow-ups like it did in Brawl (Fox would be a monster with Brawl shine: jab1, jab2, maybe with a jab trap, shine, dash attack, follow up from there...).

Its best use seems to be for recovery. It used to be an excellent option for defense or approaching from the air, but it has a lot more cooldown now. For recovery though, it can really help you watch out for what the opponent wants to do before using your recovery options.

There's no doubt that it got nerfed, though (AGAIN).

So, shine would be like a hit confirm into fair/bair offstage? It would be very useful since going offstage with aerials as Fox is way too high commitment most of the time, and a shine sounds much less committing if whiffed. Would you need to have and spend an airjump to land the aerial after the shine?

Use your second jump to recover plus up B. I usually go for it if someone is trying to recover low(hitting with the lower half of shine). Works on big characters too.If the opponent recovers high,Hit them with the upper half of your shine then double jump and bair. Imo its still risky and hard to land (at least without the GCC). Fox seems more like on stage fighter where as Falco was meant to fight off stage and gimp (that Falco Fair spike is real).

Not my vid. Found it while looking for new Fox vids. I figured this was a perfect example.

If you illusion close to tje ground and it gets shielded, you can shine faster than a turnaround jab to counter the shield grab probably?

I can't seem to work it into my arsenal well. Really miss the shine-spike from Melee.

I got a shine spike kill on for glory the other day. Bow to your Senpai.

Yeah Falco's edgeguarding is ridiculous.
I heard falco's bair is a godlike move anyone who uses Falco should become very intimate with <3

Shine stalling still kinda works as a tool to counter juggle traps. Stuff like Sheik dthrow -> uair at high % can be avoided consistently.
