To spike someone, you need to hit them with the foot/heel.

What I do is jump and press left or right on the C-stick depending on where I am. If you use the C-stick to Fair, you won't move left or right, which is good for spiking someone as they come onto the edge. As you press left or right with the C-stick, fast fall enough so that you can hear the sound the fair makes. It makes that hitting noise a little bit above the ground usually. If you want to go off stage and use it, I would use the joystick and the A button so that you can move slightly. But, I wouldn't fastfall as much when you are trying to spike the opponent off the edge.

DI should be neutral to away from the opponent on stage. When you are off, neutral to toward the opponent.

I typically don't use Fair as a spike, rather, a way of pushing people off platforms or pressuring shield off edge hop.

Too much start up on the move which leads me to believe I could be footstooling or nair/bair to get the job done a lot easier.

Also, players who use forward B as a way to get back on the platform are good targets for Snake's f air. If you can get your heel timing down good enough you can time it to spike them as soon as they reach you. It takes a lot of practice but Im sure you'll get it down. Also, when you are f airing off stage your heel will spike them if they are slightly diagonally above you which makes for a surprise spike that can be effective against players who try to avoid the normal spikes occurring when they are beneath you. I usually use the spike to defend against players who leap out at me to edge gaurd. Defense is the best offense I say.

Here's a weird way to look at it: "The Knee" (Capt. Falcon's f-air) is the father of Snake's f-air heel spike. They both have good properties. Snake's f-air pwns on a spike mostly, but "the knee" has many more applications due to it being a horizontal killer. Bottom line: Snake's f-air is one of the best moves in Brawl.

From what i've seen and done, the highest point Snake brings his foot at an f-tilt is where your enemy needs to be when it hits. It takes a great amount of anticipation, so don't wait for the enemy to be right next to you when they are recovering. One of the harder meteors to hit in my opinion.
