This idea came to me a while ago while rummaging through the Melee forum.

-how do u wavedash?
-OMG SEARCH FUNCTION, NOOB!
-LOL
-ROFLMAYO NOOOWB
-Please use the search function. *Closes*

There's a lot of these threads, and it seems like people aren't too excited to talk about it-- since you know, wavedashing is one of the oldest techniques ever, and if you don't know how to do it, you're a noob.

...so you turn to the search function. You type Wavedash into the text box, click search and BAM. 30538 pages of threads that have the word wavedash in it. Then you have to go into specifics, etc, etc...

The best place for simple questions such as this would be an IRC channel. I know there's already a DC++ channel, but it's hidden deep within Video Discussion>Misc, and it's basically just for sharing files.

With an IRC channel, it'll allow members to ask simple questions which, in the long run, will significantly reduce useless one-line posts, such as the wavedash example.

Along with easy communication between members, it'd also be a great environment for various members to become more friendly towards each other.

So what do you think? I suggested it once before, but it was overlooked after someone mentioned the DC++ channel. I was reinspired to suggest this after listening to the podcast.

I'm all for it. But only for the social part when I'm bored. If the newcomers can find the chat before going straight to melee discussion and posting their questions then yeah it would work, but that's alot of answering the same question.

Also, most of them aren't usually that perceptive. You were around during 'the rumour' days I presume so you should know what I mean.

Well, I'm not saying it'll MAGICALLY make all idiots smarter, but it's a lot easier to shut them up via IRC with an instant "THIS WAY", rather than the whole: "Make new thread, wait for at least 4 'U NOOB!' posts, then a closed topic with search instructions.

And with rumors, it's a simple yes or no answer.

Now, it would be "Make new thread, wait for at least 4 'U NOOB!' posts, then a closed topic with IRC instructions"

Though this may be true, IRC is still a better place to find simple answers than the search function.

the dc++ channel is hidden far too well for newbies to really make use of (plus you could even have java clients on the site with IRC) and the clients i've seen suck if you want to do nothing more than chat with it, i heartily approve as long as it becomes "dc++ channel 2" instead of being some stupid "oh this is a specific thing, only questions about wavedashing are allowed here!" ****fest

Xsyven, blue doesn't fit your personality. Pink is alot more your style! =]

But I don't know if I like the idea of a IRC channel. I mean, wavedashing wasn't that hard to find, you just search for stickies with techniques in it and there it is.

I wouldn't mind seeing an IRC channel. It's a great place to simply chat with the rest of the community. I don't think we need an IRC channel for simply answering the questions noobs ask :/

you guys aren't considering that searching for yourself or setting up dc++ are way too clunky for getting the answers to someone's question, let alone general chatting

An IRC channel is a superb idea. Definately would be a great way to meet new people and such. Not that just posting on the boards isn't good, but chat rooms tend to work at a faster rate.

Of course there is also the added bonus that we can conjure up some bash.org worthy quotes.

so what network were you guys planning on putting it? i was thinking oftc since i've had good experiences with them and i don't see how their non-relation to gaming (they're primarly about open source stuff, they'll let you keep a non-OSS-related channel as long as you put +s on the mode lock) would matter as i op a small gaming-related (sort of) channel there
