Speed Weed
Smash Master
Alright so I am no longer holding back in the slightest. Even Dark Schneider was still kinda well known, sorta. But now I am going full deep cut mode
Job #27: Jun Kazami from Yoroshiku Mechadoc
Yoroshiku Mechadoc was a sort of racing manga that was created by Ryuji Tsugihara and ran in Jump from 1982 to 1985.
The series follows the exploits of Jun Kazami, a mechanic who works at the "Mechadoc" tuning station in Japan. The series focused on how Jun and his crew went up against rival tuners by tuning and fixing up regular ol' cars into stuff fit for racing and then, well, racing them! The series oftentimes showcased actual cars that were coming out at the time, which gave it that nice boost of relevance to its time, and the way it showcased regular cars being tuned up and raced instead of the extravagant supercars in other racing manga also gave it an additional angle of "if you get off your fat ass, YOU could do this to your car!" Indeed, the series actually did quite well, but never has been translated, not even gotten an unofficial translation - joining the wide oeuvre of Jump series that are beloved in Japan but pretty much completely unknown in the West. Still, it was successful! It even got an anime by Tatsunoko Productions that ran for 30 episodes! Our list of represented series, although pretty good, is still pretty standard, so I think it's time we do a couple deeper digs. In terms of references over the years, it's been kinda on-and-off. Jun and friends have had pretty consistent appearances in stuff like anniversary artwork, and I think it once got a shoutout in Bakuman??? but in terms of game appearances, it's been much more sparse. Characters from the series appeared as NPCs in the first one of the Famicom RPGs, which makes sense - that game covered most of the successful series that had run in Jump up to that point. After that, the only other appearance I can recall was when Jun appeared as a playable character in the 50th anniversary mobile game Weekly Shonen Jump: Jikkyo Janjan Stadium. I think it'd be pretty cool to get it in here as well!
As a mechanic, Jun is pretty much perfect for the assist role. He and his crew will show up and have two different functions depending on how the summoner is doing. If you've taken some damage, they'll heal you up, but if you're already at full health, they'll give you a nice status boost, increasing your strength, speed and durability!
Anyway yeah I cannot wait to pull out more characters that ****ing nobody else here has heard of. I live for that
