Smash Sisters to Celebrate 1-Year Anniversary at Genesis 4

Typically held at majors, crew battles are a community-wide tradition. They transform the game into a team-based affair that never fails to bring excitement to both participants and spectators. But when you think about it, you primarily see teams made up of men.

Smash Sisters, an organization led by Lilian "Milktea" Chen and Emily "EmilyWaves" Sun, was formed with the purpose of giving female Smashers a chance to compete against one another in a series of crew battles. As a progressive movement, it has helped foster more female players into the scene.

At Genesis 4 on January 21, Smash Sisters will be celebrating its 1-year anniversary with a bang. Details for the event can be seen in the infographic below.

I think I understand the sentiment, but is it REALLY beneficial for women to have their own Smash tournaments? I respect how far the movement has come but who is this helping? I'm genuinely curious.

I think that the idea is that women sometimes feel intimidated by the fact that they're entering events where they'll be surrounded by men. I know I would feel really out of place entering a tournament where I'd be surrounded by women.

So an event exclusive to female players helps bring them into the scene at an event where they can feel more comfortable than they might otherwise. Plus it's a side event, so there's less pressure overall.

It's not really intended to be a separate division on its own, but rather a side event that brings more people into the scene. I know my own scene in Texas does events like this: we run a separate (free) event just for people who go 0-2 or 1-2 so that those new to the scene don't feel like they wasted their time by coming, only to lose immediately. Both of these events are intended to be friendly to newcomers, they just target different groups.

Ah okay. That makes sense.

Some people think women aren't good enough to compete with men, and want to soften the blow to their fragile little egos by creating a separate scene where men aren't allowed because losing feels bad!

Surely I'm not the only person who sees this as really patronizing, am I? Even if you don't think it is patronizing, this is an unambiguous case of sex-based discrimination. Why is this being advertised on the front page?

looking forward for that beautiful blonde girl commentator, idk her name, she's gorgeous.
I am totally looking forward to Vish Kreygasm

You're totally missing the point. Smash sisters is meant to encourage intermingling of the sexes by giving women a safe space and network of friends to rely on. Many girls/women aren't as comfortable around boys/men so smash sisters makes them feel safe going to sausage fest events like smash tournaments, like genesis, the whole point is to get 'Sisters' that wouldn't otherwise go to events to go in the first place.

So you encourage intermingling of the sexes by separating them? That's an interesting concept.

D
Good thing men are pigs.

I loved the last Smash Sisters thread I was a part of, too. Everyone was so polite and thoughtful.

sliiightly off topic, but I wonder if this could open the door to a youth division at Smash events for the 13 and under crowd. Could be handy for those players who are also fulltime parents and want their kids to have fun at Genesis as well.

It would actually be super cool if there was a tournament that had male and female crew battles as separate brackets right? So all Male in one and all Female in one, then the tournament goes as usual and the winner of each fight against each other. Not as a way to say one side is better, but it's an interesting idea. I'm totally for normal crew battles too!

All it is is an incentive for female smashers to take part in events. It doesn't prevent either sex from playing against each other or socialising.

Wow I didn't know this was a thing but. isn't this like sexist and saying that women can't compete with men
You know what I kinda understand because women get "intimidated" please I've been going to tournaments since I was 13. Just get over it. This is plane and simple sexism jesus I thought we were better than this.
