Swf, I have an assignment in english class that I have to about relating to technology. I wanna do it about smash/ Melee vs Brawl. if you could post ideas/ points or better yet, magazines or quotes that state something about the game. I know for a fact that there was an interview with Sakruai about how Brawl isn't focused towards a competetive audience, wavedashing etc.

Please help me make this paper worthwhile! Thank you!

edit: sources and stuff that convinced me:

Oh man, that yahoo link just showed me how funny brawl players are.
I don't think any of them directly mentioned gameplay.
Sakurai did a great job in targeting the community that is easily lulled by shiny pictures and gimmicky add-ons.

I don't know too many magazine quotes about it, so let someone else try to fill you on on that.

Here is an interesting thread started by Scar on the debate between Melee vs Brawl.

http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=153322

What I tend to notice is that Brawl is more well suited for the masses of Casual players, since it has more characters, more items, more stages, a way to play online and a longer storymode.

I don't think melee would benefit too much from any of those, other than maybe characters and MAYBE stages.

Melee players, at least the ones that still play it now, play on a more competitive scale. More items would have no effect, more stages would just lead to more banned/gimmicky levels, online would be terrible because even 5 frames of lag is severe and lolstorymode.

Yahoo answers wouldn't be a good source to use for an English paper. XD Then again, there aren't going to be many, if any, "scholarly" sources on smash comparisons. lol.

i think your best source would be various quotes from people here on smashboards. just make sure you use the more intelligent posts and arguments =P

I kind of think so too, in reality, I want to do something that is easy to gather legit sources for, that will get me an "A".

"Every aspect of Melee has been improved, and added on Brawl."

Well that settles that.

Thank you, TwitchyGamer101.

Oh man that yahoo answers made me lol, "Brawl has more characters and better graphics!"

But on subject there are plenty of really good quotes, I would suggest going through any video wife commentates on, and or reading the recent interview with sakurai on ign, telling about how thinks melee is the sharpest of the three games.

As a fellow 831 resident I implore you to stay in school and write papers on relevant, interesting issues as opposed to some bull**** to get the easy A.

Let me put it this way, even SMASHBOARDS POSTERS don't care about brawl vs melee anymore. Listen to me and Replicate because we have actually spent more than a semester each at coladge (collige? sp)

I could see a math/stats project being informative and useful. You can gather your own statistics but you can't make up research.

An article on the history of the Smash Bros. series including major tournaments could actually be pretty good, if only interesting to one of us. :embarrass:

How about instead of a Melee v Brawl paper.. a paper on the Melee scene? Like how people have been brought together with common interests to compete for the top spot in tournament play?

Better then a silly stupid meaningless debate.

If you actually plan on getting anywhere with your argument you'll have to get into deep philosophical issues in order to get the past the aesthetic subjectivity wall before you'll actually be able to explain why melee is better than brawl. Since you're probably incapable of that, I suggest writing it anyway since it's not like it matters whether you have a good argument, just have good grammar and follow the format, and you'll do fine.

Seriously, actually being able to explain why a game is better than another is very complicated, even when it's OBVIOUS which is better, as is the case for Melee and Brawl. Most attempts to explain why one is better than the other fail because they can't define "better" and they can't explain why their definition of "better" is better.
In other words, they don't know what good is, despite being able to experience it.

If you really want to know, you can start here: http://insomnia.ac/commentary/on_complexity_depth_and_skill/
