Smash community aside, getting people into Nintendo?

Hey guys, @ The 0ne The 0ne here with a topic that's been bothering me for a long time.

Well, actually first of all, I'd like to commend everyone in the Smash community for doing their parts to get others into the community for the game we all love. I mean I've seen those pictures of Uncle Sam saying "I want you to start a Smash Scene," that article from a while ago about the tournament held outside in a park for a everyone to see, and that thing in VBGC's self-promotion reel about finding your local Smash Scene. This is all seriously fantastic. I want this game one day to be bigger than LoL.

But on to the matter at hand. I know a lot of people who would probably love to play Smash, even at a competitive level. The only problem is,
they aren't Nintendo fans.

How can we get people interested in Smash when they don't even like the company it comes from? The whole point of Super Smash Bros is to bring together all of these "nostalgic" characters that we've "grown up with" and are "classics" that are all fighting each other. Who's going to play a game like that where the only characters they recognize, hell even RESPECT are Mario and the Gorilla Guy?

This isn't intended for people who were never really into video games to begin with. Don't search there; it's a lost cause. I'm talking about people who say they are "Gamers" and own an Xbox and only play FPSes. I'M NOT SAYING THAT'S BAD, but before we even think about getting these guys into the Smash Community, we should get them interested in Nintendo, as well as their current gaming hobbies.

tl;dr: Discuss below about getting people into Nintendo, before Smash specifically, because they'll appreciate the game more, and won't be turned away by it as quickly.

A vast majority of people that are fans of Nintendo grew up with Nintendo.

If someone grew up with Master Chief and their XBox, that's where their nostalgia will lie.

The only thing you can really do is share and discuss the great library of Nintendo titles when the opportunities present themselves.

Another angle you can look at this is that gamers like the ones mentioned above probably do know most of the Smash characters. In fact, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat players enjoy a fighting game with completely original fighters.

But it could be that the reason they are turned away from Smash is that it's a kiddie game made by a kiddie company. Obviously that's not true, as all us Nintendo fans know, but that's what they may think. If they are eased into Nintendo before introducing Smash, maybe with games like Splatoon coming up that they are more likely to enjoy, they will be more likely to join the Smash Scene. Please respond below with methods you have and if you agree or disagree!

Honestly, Smash is the perfect way of getting people into Nintendo. Before Smash I only had SEGA and Sony consoles and was a perfectly happy kid. Then one night my parents took me to a social gathering where I was thrown into a backroom with three other kids, a TV, an N64 and a copy of Smash and all we did was play that non-stop. Afterwards I really wanted to know who this Link guy was and why people like his games so much, or who the hell this Samus robot was and why I hadn't seen any of his games anywhere.

I begged and begged my parents for Nintendo stuff after that. A year or two later I ended up getting a GameCube due to a store near us selling them for something like 80% off and found out that Link was the hero of Hyrule and people like his games because they're amazing and I found out that Samus was most certainly not a he or a robot.

If you want to get people into Nintendo, show them Smash. If they like it enough they'll probably get curious about the characters and will check out their games. But if someone's really not all that interested there's no use shoving it down their throats, then you'll just cause them to hate it.

@ finalark finalark makes a very good point. The first time I played Smash Bros. I was into Pokemon and Donkey Kong and was vaguely familiar with Mario stuff, but it was Smash Bros. that sparked my interest in all of the other franchises, particularly Zelda and Metroid, which are two of my favorite franchises today. I mean, why did Fire Emblem get released outside of Japan after Melee? If people get into Smash Bros. enough, they're going to start looking into where each character comes from and start sampling games. Funny how one of Nintendo's best-sellers also seems to be a really effective marketing tool.

Before I had played Melee, the only Nintendo Franchises I had really cared for were Mario and Pokemon, that's about it. It really helped expand my horizons as a gamer and made me into an all around Nintendo fan, rather than just Mario and Pokemon. All though, I think it is much easier to get someone into Nintendo when they're young because that's how we were all introduced to them and we also had much more time to engross ourselves into tons of franchises and games, and quite honestly some of these franchises just dont have the same appeal to someone if they weren't fans when they were young. It may also just depend on the franchise as well. It may just be best to introduce them to Smash first, heck a lot of people I know are into Smash without being big Nintendo fans.

Running a game store in the south... we get a ton of people attacking our stores over "Nintendo-esqe" presence, and when people start attacking Nintendo and being plain rude calling Nintendo for "kids". And I have to explain that Nintendo is a premium brand, with the most iconic characters of all time and remind them that not every game for adults has to be a blood bath.

I would like to see Nintendo make a more mature version of Mario, maybe something along side a updated Mario RPG, but even then I don't know if it would impress Nintendo haters :\

Smash was probably what also got me into Nintendo. I still remember playing Melee, and asking my older brother who that badass blonde guy wearing green clothes and holding a sword and shield was, and they said it was Link from Zelda.. From that day I kept playing him until I started enjoying other characters also, and I kept asking them what each character is originally from and getting answers.. and after that I was determined to play Zelda and I think at that time Minish Cap was released so I played it, as well as Four Swords Adventures (both co-op with my brothers and alone) after that I played Ocarina of Time (on the 15th anniversary edition released on the GC that included MM/OoT/LoZ/AoL and a demo of TWW) and Twilight Princess and I just fell in love with the series, continuing to eagerly play Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, and trying to play some of the older entries, most notably MM and AlttP, although I still didn't finish either sadly.

I also started playing Mario games etc, starting with Sunshine and then moving to SM64 remake on the DS, to the NSMB series, as well as Mario Kart, Strikers, Tennis, etc.

Same goes to Fire Emblem, although that was a series I only watched my brother play and didn't play until I got a bit older and maybe when I was around 13-14 years old.

I also tried to play some Star Fox games and Metroid games, liked them, but they didn't stick around with me as well as LoZ or Mario titles did.

All that being said, I honestly don't believe you should get people to like Nintendo. At it's current state, Nintendo is doing terribly and really isn't appealing to neither its fans or other consumers. Personally I literally only bought the WiiU because of Smash, and I wasn't even going to buy Smash until a friend of mine back in july or august of last year convinced me to get it on the 3DS on release and told me to play the demo which I ironically ended up getting addicted to and I bought the game day 1, igniting my passion for the game and discovering the competitive aspect of it and quickly trying to get good. I'd already played all the previous titles casually with my brother so I at least had an idea of how the game works and picked it up from there.

I've actually had firsthand experience with wanting to covert people to Nintendo. It doesn't help being a woman, because I get responses like "it's a girl company." And people think I'm some casual pokemon/animal crossing fangirl.

I mean it's not so bad when you're having a debate with fellow fans of Nintendo, or at least retro gamers. They can understand why you love the franchises, and or why you care so much for the name Nintendo.

When I see a little kid playing anything old school, regardless if it's Nintendo or not, I consider it a moment where faith in humanity is restored. However, in this day and time most kids are playing stuff like GTA and other M rates titles, because it's what their older siblings or parents are playing. To them a Nintendo title is for babies because of the content, and rating.

I worked in a used game store for nearly two years. I was always trying to push Nintendo on the younger crowd. Sometimes I peaked their interest, though most times the response was negative.

I'm not saying we should force Nintendo down people's throats, I'm just saying we should at least try and make an impression.

It's not this day and time. It's always been like that, ever since I was a kid. I was the one playing Nintendo stuff and games my older brothers buy, other boys were playing fifa, call of duty, and GTA.

Maybe back in the 90s and late 80s that wasn't the case, but at that time all there was were Nintendo consoles anyway. PS1 came late.
