Smash 64 online?

Hey guys,

I've heard that there's a Smash 64 online, and don't know much about it. I would love to get it. Could someone explain to me how it works, or perhaps direct me to the proper thread that would inform me? I'm assuming this is a straight up PC emulation that has an online built in-- some how. Either way, I'd love to play with a Gamecube controller... is this possible? If you guys play this, what do you guys use for controllers?

Is there lag? I mean, I hate Brawl's online because the button delay is so terrible. Is this present in 64 online?

Is there a decent size community for this game online? Like, will I find people to play with easily enough?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys,

p.s. sorry if I posted this in the wrong place, or overlooked a thread that would have explained this.

We use PJ64k to play online. There should be a thread somewhere, or just google it (I thought it's even on youtube).

It is possible to play with gc controller, you'll need an adapter, someone else can tell you which. Most of us use the pc keyboard or a GC/PS3/XBOX controller, some use an N64 controller.

Lag depends on your connection and that of your opponent, and also somewhat on the distance. The distance mostly affects delay in the input though. With people near you (around 100km), you should have no lag at all and 1 frame input delay (which is the minimum I think). People from Europe and America also play each other every now and then, if both connections are good it is playable if the distance is not too big.

The online community is big enough, you will always find people if you live in NA, Europe, Australia, or South-America, you just need to get in touch with everyone

There is sometimes really bad lag but it's still fun. Also if you can get p2p it won't be nearly as bad, but I always play on Galaxy 64 with 7 frames of delay which is terrible.

If you're playing with 3 frames or so it won't be too bad though.

Check the stickies for info on how to set up online and then use the ask a question thread if you need more help

I decided to take a while to answer your post:

Look at the smash index thread for more information, The emulator is called Project64k (you can also use Mupen64k but less people use it), the ROM is called Super Smash Bros (U) [!] (Make sure its this name), look it up on Google. Most people play if they are East Coast or even West Coast on Galaxy64, which you can find the IP on the smash index as well.

Either way, I'd love to play with a Gamecube controller... is this possible? If you guys play this, what do you guys use for controllers
You need to buy an adapter if you don't want to use the keyboard, look up Gamecube to Computer USB adapter on google, maybe ask others to pick a really good adapter. I believe they are between 10 to 30 dollars (mostly around 19.99 to 24.99).

Is there lag? I mean, I hate Brawl's online because the button delay is so terrible. Is this present in 64 online?
If you are on a server like Project64k, and you are bothered by delay, play on LAN or Excellent connection as they have less delay. There is 0 lag or barely any depending on your connection and the opponents unless the opponent has a really bad connection. How it works is that when you go on a server, you'll get a ping, such as with me I connect with between 15 and 40 ping (3 frames to 5 frames) on Excellent and 12 and 28 ping on LAN (1 to 3 frames) on Galaxy64. This is the basic frames you play with a server close to you. For example, If I connect to a European server, I usually have 6 to 12 frames on Excellent/LAN depending on my Ping. Your opponents frames will not bother your connection unless the opponent lags.
Also, there is a tendency to disconnect (D/C abbreviation), this is not related to lag but it is more related to how the server is made. Reset the cheats whenever you start a game (Unlock all Chars and unlock Mushroom Kingdom) to make the D/C's less common. This is the main problem with online.

If you really get bothered by delay, or you want to play more Europeans, download the P2P client as well, for an even better connection. There should be a p2p set up thread in the smash index.

Is there a decent size community for this game online? Like, will I find people to play with easily enough?
The community is large, but there is a very big gap in skill level between the top and bottom or even between the medium good and the not so good. Its probably the main problem with smash 64 online.

Actually, I got a gamecube adapter, and it doesn't seem to read all buttons, no matter how i caliber it, or the deadzone. Might just be mine, i'm not saying it's gonna happen to you.

I use a PS1 controller. USING DPAD. I don't even know anyone that's actually using a D-PAD for this game.

And yes, you totally overlooked many threads that talks about it O.o
Depends on your current OS.(xp vistaa or 7) get the appropriate version of Project64k

you can get the smash rom at www.emuparadise.org(and on many other sites)

You don't need an adapter to not use a keyboard. You can also use a controller that is compatible with PCs right out of the box.

Yeah, just to clarify, I don't think it's been said yet- Downloading ROMs is illegal in most countries, so playing smash online is pretty hard to do without breaking the law. I've heard that if you have a copy of the console and game, it's OK, but I don't think that's true. So, if you're very, very paranoid or very, very principled, this might not be for you.

Thanks for the info guys!! I'll have to look into this a bit more. I already have the rom.

@ KoRoBeNiKi: Thanks for the elaborate response. :)

@Battlecow, thanks for the warning, but it IS legal to have a rom that you own a hard copy of. In this case I obviously own Smash 64 (who doesn't?). :)

Thanks again every1! :D

its more that it is technically legal..but also that nintendo doesn't care, or they would have taken down the website AGES ago.

Incorrect. It is legal to have a rom you ripped yourself, ie USING your copy of SSB64. Downloading a rom from the internet is almost certainly illegal, unless your copy happens to be the one that the rom was ripped off of.
