Super Paper Mario is actually my favorite. Turn Based Battles really aren't my thing these days. It's like, Pokemon is the only game I play that still does turn based battles, and even there I'm kinda wishing Game Freak will give Pokemon the Zelda treatment and "rethink the conventions". After playing stuff like TWEWY and Xenoblade and such, turn based battles just seem so old school for me.
I just want to point something out as there's a reasons why I could hate turn based that some game made it manageable.
Pokemon, I will be completely honest: if repels did not exists, I would hate the series pretty much. Except for x and y just because of 3d visuals that is appealing enough, but my complain on turn based is that you expect that to be repetitive. Because of this, I tend to be ok if the game does something that makes battles shorter or less annoying. It's mechanics like the auto fight in Earthbound or the ATE gauge in Chrono trigger with on field encounter or even a QUICK run away function (hated the speed in pokemon 4g that was so annoying). If the game has random encounter and doesn't do anything to make them less annoying, I would basically hate in the long run the game. I tried FF7, and that's exactly what happened because random encounters that after hours of play could not be avoided.
TTYD however did something I never expected: make fights so much random and satisfying that I wanted to do more. It's crazy how much stuff could happen in those. The simple fact of doing a stylish was just so satisfying that I did them for absolutely nothing at one point. It even got to the point when I was not hating the game for having to battle weak enemies for only 1 star point. Chapter 3 is the best example of why you can make a repetitive mechanic fun to be repetitive as it's actually more enjoyable to do more. That's so far the only game that doesn't need anything to simplify the battles as it would even make them less enjoyable.
I like turn based, but only if it's made to not be annoying at one point. TTYD didn't even need any mechanics for that so I wonder something about RPG in general...
Instead of trying to improve the convenience of repetitive battles, why we don't try to make repetitive fight not even something that would be intentionally avoided?
I mean who spams repels in Pokemon or intentionally avoid some fights in on field encounter game like Earthbound? I even at some point had to despawn them since it was too much.
I don't think I'm alone, but I want to know if some feel the same.
