I'm sure a lot of people play it for the gameplay. There's a lot of people who've uploaded their no damage maniac runs, which means they're obviously dedicated to that certain aspect pretty highly. Plus the meta is pretty developed as I've seen strategy guides(closest thing I can call them) for how to git gud at the game, and it's fairly comprehensive.
But with that said, it's undeniable that a large portion of the fanbase is there for the cute anime girls(and the music!).

I'm pretty sure there are people why enjoy it, but sadly most of its fanbase devolves into shipping and waifu wars. It's a shame too, because there are a lot of things it does right.

Huh...this is the first I'm hearing of this actually. It's not surprising though, as I'm sure any series with a fairly large amount of attractive females is bound to face this fate.
Does Touhou really fare well compared to other shmups though? I don't know if what it does right actually still holds up since I don't follow the genre, which is necessary since there's a lot of competition in it. Does Touhou do anything right that other shmups haven't already?

Well, fair enough then.
I think the main reason Touhou is so popular though is because it's on PC, which is a platform many have. I recall there being some Sega Saturn/Genesis shmups with cutesy anime girl characters, and I believe Jontron even covered some of them in a video, but because they're so obscure given the console they're released in and combined with who they pander to...they didn't get nearly as much attention as Touhou do, despite them legitimately being great games.
