Well...I was discussing with a friend of mine who is also majoring in Deaf Studies and mentioned why Linguistics is important for teaching ASL (sign language) because you can prove if a sign looks funny/wrong, you have the linguistic knowledge to prove why it's wrong. Plus, having a linguistic background can prove that you know the language and how to translate it.

For example, if I were to explain that you gave me a book, I would gloss (written version of how one would look at it and translate) as you-GIVE-me BOOK (nod). The part where I said you-GIVE-me explains that you're giving me a book, hence the dashes. The reason for GIVE is the action, explaining what is going on in the topic. The nod part is not an actual sign, but body language/facial expression saying that you're saying yes, or nodding your head. If you were to say no, the (nod) part would be translated to (neg), which is somewhat short for negative.

I can go ahead and find a decent video to explain, but I would most likely do that tomorrow when I have free time. I figured that if I were to study some linguistics, I can apply it for my future as a teacher and how I can teach properly without signing the wrong information or misinterpreting. An example I experienced was an interpreter signing "VAGINA" instead of "TRIANGLE". Yes, this actually happened and I not only filed a complaint, but approached the school board about this. Of course they would do nothing because they don't know a damn thing about sign language and Deaf culture
