Hey guys check out this awesome OC drawing I just made by myself

Not to mention focusing solely on fan requests would make the roster kind of boring and way too predictable. Adding non-requested characters tends to be very interesting additions.

And people have to face the reality that even if Sakurai stops getting in charge of the roster, it's not going to significantly boost everyone's chances.

Sakurai does add requested characters, but he doesn't go overboard with them.

That's what makes the wait more exciting. There's bound to be some interesting surprises.

100% agree. Sakurai has mentioned (in an interview about Melee a longggg time ago) that he balanced his picks between popular picks and characters he felt would be interesting. Mewtwo for an example, was picked due to popularity and now he's finally coming back!

Because WFT was the most highly requested character of all time, right?
Took up space for other characters that could have been more interesting. And G&W was clearly extremely popular! It feels to me that he picks characters *he* feels are iconic. Which is fine, but yeah.

Oh, sure, pick the one character that wasn't requested. I agree completely with @ Frostwraith and @ Naoshi that only adding requested characters would make the roster predictable and boring.

I think there should be a balance. There should always be a surprise factor to the series and that is lost if the roster starts pandering too much to a certain factor.

Actually, a good amount of crossovers add a few surprise characters. I think it makes things interesting, leaving a surprise factor whenever new characters are announced. Otherwise, it's predictable and boring.

I'm sure G&W and WFT were really highly requested characters. Top of the list, man!

Like literally, no where did Frostwraith say WFT was a popular pick. He was pretty much saying that Sakurai does NOT ignore fan requests. Yes, he ignored some (but he usually has his reasons whether you agree or not(, but not all. I doubt Mega Man would've gotten in Smash 4 without the fan requests for his inclusion.

Hes the last surviving Yoshi from the dark future created by the evil overlord EggSatan666xXx who is also his father and mother that he hates so using his secret bloodline technique he went to the past in order to uncover his past of being the even more ultimate life form Jesus reincarnated that has to beat up Sonic in order to go to the pokemon league and become the ultimate God of battle and fuse with Sonichu in order to become the most ultimate being in the universe by infinity + 1

Meanwhile, a downside to listening to only fan requests would mean excluding unexpected and interesting choices. There needs to be a balance. We would have never gotten the likes of Ice Climbers, ROB, G&W, Duck Hunt, etc without this direction. Heck, Fire Emblem wasn't even known at all overseas, we probably wouldn't had them either (assuming they weren't picked due to popularity), thus no FE ever getting localized!

When it comes to those who were at least decently-popular as far as requests, Smash 4 had:

Add to that, would have been practically K. Rool or Little Mac tier if it weren't for Sakurai dismissing him pre-Brawl.

From there, was a bit of an odd case dealing with preconceived notions. No one saw it coming because of the thought that starters would get equal billing, a la Pokemon Trainer. But the same time the Pokemon Trainer was disconfirmed, was revealed. It blindsided people, but wasn't unpopular. It's quite a popular Mon in its own right.

, being a retro character, had a smaller but dedicated fanbase. And we always get retros, so not sure what the issue is here.

Yeah, I completely agree, I was being devil's advocate
I tend to like to identify with my characters, which is difficult to do with the quirky characters Sakurai puts in.
But they certainly are interesting.
