I'm gonna buy Xenoblade even if I have no interest in a New 3DS.

AND THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED.

It caught me off-guard too, but I didn't really feel anything because I didn't really care about the character. After reading one of the spin-off manga that stars her however...

I'm actually wanting to upgrade my OG 3DS back from 2011 to a New 3DS.

Reasons:
- My Circle Pad is broken. (I think, or at least hope, the more recent 3DS's have Circle Pads made of sturdier stuff...)
- Better specs should make loading times faster. Not a bad thing at all.
- Second stick will be very handy in Smash.
- Xenoblade Chronicles being released as an exclusive.

I have a question though : I have 2 important games on my 3DS being Smash and Pokemon, but I bought them directly on the eShop, I don't have them directly in cartridge, I have them like games on Steam for example. So, if I change my 3DS, how can I transfer the games ? It's probably a dumb question, but I still want to know the answer.

I think your NNID, and thus your games, transfers as well with System Transfer. I'm not too sure, Googling it didn't give me a clear explanation.

My 3DS is still working well enough. So I don't haven any intentions for upgrading soon. But if I did, I'd prefer to wait until the New 3DS XL came out here.

It'll be nice if the New 3DS comes out around the same time as my birthday. That way I can get it for my birthday again.

If the New 3DS XL doesn't come out at the same time, then I'll wait for that one most likely.

I recently did a system transfer and I can confirm that games do indeed transfer, as my copy of Dual Destinies was transferred to the new console.

You really don't need to buy the New 3DS. It's most likely the last upgraded version of the 3DS, with the successor being announced in like 2015 or so. You could wait for the successor to be released instead of buying the New 3DS.

Yeah, I think that's what I'll do, but I bet it confuses a lot of people like the 3DS did after the DSi. If you weren't in the loop you could easily have thought the 3DS was another DSi incremental upgrade rather than a whole new handheld.

I still want to hear about the next handheld.

The next generation console and handheld ideas sound great. Easier porting, same architecture and operating system, but it's a bit too early to think about that.
