This seems like a long shot, but what if I started on the 17th floor, then to the 33th floor, 48th floor, 62th floor, 75th floor, 87th floor, 98th floor, and finally to the 100th floor. And when one vase breaks, I return to the previous floor I was on and throw the second vase in increments of 1. And if my math is correct (which it probably isn't), this should give me 18 throws in a worst case scenario.

Is it absolutely necessary to throw the second vase in increments of 1?

Yep, because otherwise you can and will miss floors.

If you throw the first vase off at floor 50 and it breaks, then get the second vase and throw it off floor 2 and it breaks, you still haven't tested floor 1. It could have broken or it could have stayed intact. As long as there's any question of that then it's not guaranteed.

Direct always get announced at least 24 hours before. While it's possible they might break that tradition, I don't really see that happening.

This train of thought is hard to follow....
I believe with using @ Jatayu 's method, it would be reasonable to start from the second floor. But the thing is, i have no clue what method he's using...

You should try, they are good. Sure they are, what everyone calls then, Weaboo trash but they are actually pretty good

Funnily enough in this case there are many worst case scenarios, and all of them add up to 14. As in, say if you do it in 10's, the only worst worst case scenario is it breaking at floor 99 (10-->100, then 90--->99). This method, it could break at floor 13, or 26, or 38 etc and it's all 14.

And props to Jatayu for getting the fundamental idea in place, and Powerstar9 I think you would have got there too. :D

Yeah i just got at what Jatayu's method. It's interesting. i realized he used a sum and just kept decreasing the amount being added by one. I need to stop letting big numbers trip me up...
