To be honest, I considered staying on Windows 7, but I got so used to Windows 8.1's lock screens and taskbar design. I still miss my 3D Pinball from XP though.

Depends on the distro. Ubuntu and its variants have Canonical behind them. Some of the others (like Red Hat/Fedora) do as well.

Still, though, just because something's not made by a big corporation doesn't mean it's bad.
