Does the anime do it justice? I know the Umineko anime is no good at all, but maybe Higurashi is better?

If you want to fully enjoy the subtle details of the plot, the VN is the proper choice. Most importantly, in the VNs, you can see what's going on in the mind of the protagonist, while you miss out on some of that in the anime.The anime does preserve all the important plot points, though and also likes to dial up the gore. Anyway, it's certainly not 'bad' in any sense.

Since you're no stranger to VNs, I'd recommend that, personally. It's a fuller experience. (It's also better at being scary, imo)
